Unbelievable - Living Primitive | Building a FOREST YURT, Day 7 • Unbelievable - Living ... - We are living Off The Grid in a Boat Only Access forest property. We have 8 acres and the ocean is a 5 min walk South of us...a lake is a 10 min walk North of us! It is getting warmer...the mosquitos are as big as horses...the gnats are relentless...mountain lions (puma) are living around us...the bears are waking up. We need shelter! Can we get our Yurt up in the next 2 weeks? Once the yurt is up then we will work on getting electricity, running water, and clearing an area of our forest for our garden and fruit tree orchid. Join us to see if we make it.....
This Yurt build and Yurt life will be a journey, we hope you SUBSCRIBE and come with us! Enjoy #yurt #offgrid #tinyhouse #primitive #livingoffgrid #garden #veganathlete #gardening #DIY
Nicole and I are attempting to live off the grid in British Columbia, Canada. We have 8 acres of forest property sandwiched in between the Pacific Ocean, a fresh water lake, and a stream which flows year round from the lake into the ocean. For over nearly 10 years I grew a fruit tree, permaculture, garden, and native edible plant, herb, and raised bed garden food forest. You can still watch all the garden videos of my old desert garden in Arizona. I was born in British Columbia and I have returned to the Rain Forests of British Columbia to a "Raw Land" property to grow my 1st FULL EDIBLE FOOD FOREST Off Grid on a wilderness property. This climate is temperate and coastal, rarely seeing snow in the winter and highs in the 80's (30 Celsius) in the summer. It is a rare microclimate that spans from gardening zone 7-9. The property is 8 acres and completely overgrown, mostly with conifer trees. This area is a verifiable rain forest and situated in the Southwestern-most tip of the Canadian "Great Bear Rain Forest". NicHolistic ( / holisticnicole ) and I will be learning about edible seaweeds, edible native plants, edible mushrooms, and many other edible native trees/plants as we attempt to Build a Yurt, Draw Our Energy Clean, Live Off the Grid, and Grow an Epic Superfoods Garden and Fruit Tree Orchard. We will also have a lot of changes coming so get ready. More videos and BTS Clips at my VLOG channel / adventureswjakenicole

‘Please contemplate’ Everything you have for protection are for good measures, but you aren’t going to fight a cougar or grizzly with a machete. You have close to zero chance of winning. Air horn,good, bear flare, good! All are just deterrence, if that bear or cougar decides your on the menu it’s not just gonna run away, it’s a life or death situation and you need a gun.. I suggest a hand gun .357, .44, or a rifle .308 should do it, then my bets with you. Stay safe, and happy building!

I agree. He should have a gun on his hips at all times. But, being vegan, I dont knowbif they will go that route. But when you are fighting for your life and it's not really one you can win... meanwhile, hoping all the noise of saws and hammers will trump the smells of food. I really want to see this succeed and they be safe in the process.

However, it needs to be said...if someone is not used to guns, not regularly used to how to handle, load, unload, clean a gun, it is probably safer for them NOT to have one.
@garrycole9187
@garrycole9187 5 жыл бұрын
The Machete is only for the person not being attacked. Bears are not a real problem as long as you let them know you are there and stay away from the cubs. Cougars are the problem so if one should attack Jake or Nicole, the other can cut it bad enough not to kill it but make it retreat. A gun is okay but again only for the person not being attack and there is a danger you will hit the wrong thing, namely the other person. You have to have great reaction to a sudden attack to able to defend yourself with a gun.

@@crmartinez1971 I don't being vegan is an argument in that case. Besides trying to fight an animal with a machete would cause far more pain, be far more gruesome and a far slower death for the animal.... than say, a single shot(whether to injure, kill or scare.)

Wow guys great work and progress!!! Living in the Philippines, now we have many mosquito, what we do before dark is burn coconut husk they dont flame they smolder (for the smoke) when we are outside and it helps to rid the pest in the area, and we can enjoy the out doors for a leght of time!! I understand U dont have coconut husk but i bet some of that moss and fungi growing on the ground would do the trick for smoke. We have to realize if U live in the rural area as we do and U guys, time well spent to collect the things we need and stock pile a bit, once a week would be fun to collect and put in a drum. Most any thing that is damp will give off good smoke with a good hot fire or coals. LOVING IT!!

Thank you for addressing the animal defense questions. It IS a practical issue. Nice to know you hav3vsobe plans. The blade that close to a bear or wolves (I love Wolves!) wont help you. They are way faster than you are. But hopefully the other deterrents will keep you safe. I was wondering about the food issue. Are you keeping your food in bear proof containers as bear can pry car open, ect? And once a bear GETS to the food, you are on its radar for a source of calories.

Sawdust is plant dust, but if your working with steel, than yes use eye protection. I've had metal pulled out of my eye a few times at it embeds itself in the eye, but wood will not do that. I know you're sincere, but I think you're wrong. Splinters in the eye are perhaps a long shot, but hidden nails in wood or pieces of blade are possible. I worked in a shipyard as a rigger and we were the guys who transported the injured out of submarines and other work sites. Shit happens that you'd never predict and it involves all trades. How much effort does it take to put on a pair of goggles and significantly reduce your chance of injury? I might risk my hands without gloves, but never my eyes. @@rahdaswami2452

Make yourself a simple water level with 40-ft length of clear tubing and some dye to color the water. Otherwise, you are likely to drift with that 4-ft aluminum level you are using. Then again, perfect level may not be critical for the yurt platform. But water levels are easy to build and use for home and permaculture projects.

For the replacement 2x6's your using. Glue them together and use a few wood screws (double check with local lumber yard/hardware store on how many/much you need). Last thing you want is for water to get in between them and either build up mold (pressure treated lumber is mold-resistant, not mold proof) and the expansion/contraction of ice in the winter. So, any plans for a tea scrub so you can make your own tea?

You need a combination of essential oils in a glass bottle sprayer for the gnats. Gnats / No see ums are attracted to carbon dioxide when we exhale. Thats why they go for your face. Use equal parts of Peppermint , Eucalyptus and Orange essential oil and water to repel them. If you notice they really come around at dusk or whenever the air is still. Also make sure you identify poison ivy in your area. Good luck!

Where you started seems like a low point in elevation, which will make your legs pretty short as you work towards the back which is OK as long as you don't loose your clearance height your aiming at. If you want to keep a 3 ft. clearance for storage, start at a high point in elevation and work down hill. This will give you the greatest clearance.

Hey Jake. I only just got the notification with 30mins notice. I look forward to seeing what you have for us but I might have to duck out before the end. The inside of those show Yurts is amazing. I look forward to seeing the interior design and decor you two decide to go with. There used to be a tree house company near Port Alberni years ago with similar style construction to yurts. They had very cool interiors, 12v refrigeration, water pumped up from below, and solar from panels up on the tree top. Even a bicycle powered elevator to lift supplies up and down! We really love the off grid lifestyle even though our jobs have us in the city!!! Lance & Carol - Victoria

Scary,scary,scary - about the bears I mean. I sincerely hope you don't encounter any,not too close anyway. Maybe you need to get a safe to store your food in. It's interesting watching your progress on your Yurt. I didn't know so much work was involved. I've seen those big tiger slugs when I visited my cousin 20 years ago. Wil your veg survive? Indian food is great,healthy and tasty. Looking forward to your next with more progress on the Yurt,be great when you move in.

Jake, how do you know how to make the foundation ? Do you have an instruction booklet ? You should have your Sci and Nunchuks, even the Bo would make the Bears run off ! Could you imagine the bears nose after a Nunchuck smacking ?

A 2x6 actual size is 1.5x5.5.. a 4x6 actual size is 3.5x5.5. If put together (2) 2x6 u are 1/2 inch short on the thickness. Also probably not as strong as a 4x6. I would add a third 2x6, glue and screw them together with lag bolts
