Pharmacist here… There are several antibiotics you should not drink with while taking. They can cause a reaction called a “disulfram reaction.” Alcohol can also affect the efficacy of some antibiotics. And depending on how much you drink, you can also affect how quickly your body takes to heal while fighting off an infection. Because there are different reasons we advise against consuming alcohol with certain different antibiotics, we just take care of all the bases by saying “don’t drink while on this.”

@RitzStarr
@RitzStarr 2 ай бұрын
Yeah though depending on the cat they need to drink more or less. Dry food cats should be drinking regularly, wet food cats can get away with drinking a lot less. That's why cats with kidney issues pretty much have to be on a wet food diet because they likely don't drink enough. But plenty of cats drink enough to healthily consume only dry food.

I'm with Dave on the blindness makes you hear better thing. I've been blind since 23 and I get a little annoyed when people say that becoming blind made my hearing better so of course I hear more. The reason it annoys me is I spent countless hours training myself to listen to more, identify sounds, learn to find peole and objects by their sound...I can find a person across a parking lot by them calling my name once before I start and once when I'm in the middle of crossing. I worked hard on that, it's not some magical power that becoming blind gave me. It's frustrating that all my hard work is chalked up to "OH yeah, well you're blind" At least I know I did the hard work!

Yeah, I paraphrase Sherlock Holmes at people who think I hear better. "You hear what I do, you just fail to observe." What I find particularly funny, though, is that not only do sighted people fail to pay attention to sound, smell and touch, they also fail to pay attention to their sight a lot of the time. I'll be helping someone look for something and I'll do the checking under the bed, behind the couch, all the places that are harder to see because I'll just use touch anyway -- then it turns out the object was on the table in plain view and no one noticed it.

Omg, Simon, yes cats drink. In fact it's very important if you're feeding them kibble that you also provide water at the same time. A lot of cats don't like to drink standing water so you have to get a fountain. My cat insists on washing and wiping his paws first and he often uses his paw to bring water to his mouth instead of drinking directly from a bowl or fountain. He's an odd cat, but we love him. Adult cats are lactose intolerant.

As a pharmacist I need to clarify on the antibiotics and alcohol myth. While most antibiotics are 100% fine, there is one class of antibiotics which cause what’s called a disulfiram like reaction. Disulfiram is alcohol equivalent of painting something bitter on your nails to stop you biting them. If you have alcohol with disulfiram or antibiotics in that one class you will be VERY sick! The way I describe it is “the worst hangover ever on half a drink and it happens straight away” and if you drink enough it can lead to seizures and worse

So as a health professional, I can say the reasoning behind the not wanting to sleep after a possible concussion is valid, the idea being that some types of brain bleeds can occur at different intervals depending on the type (location in the brain and venous vs arterial) and determining level of consciousness is a big part of the diagnosis. Obviously if you get cleared by a doctor you get rest, but the idea is that if you get hit in the head, don’t immediately go lay down, take sone time to make sure you are ok and get cleared by a doctor or nurse practitioner if you have any changes

ER nurse here... These sort of vague statements about head injuries make me nervous. The biggest take away is having a medical professional tell you it's safe to sleep. A lot of people in the US will not seek treatment even if they have a concussion. Because of this many medical professionals still tell people (like family and friends) not to sleep within 2 hours of a concussion. This isnt to prevent coma but to see any signs of deterioration. Always seek emergency treatment if: •Any loss of consciousness or confusion/disorientation after imjury. •Suffered a injury at high speed (car or bike accident, a steep fall.) •Are vomiting or feel nauseated after injury Signs of Concussion •Headache or “pressure” in head. •Nausea or vomiting. •Balance problems or dizziness, or double or blurry vision. •Bothered by light or noise. •Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy. •Confusion, or concentration or memory problems. •Just not “feeling right,” or “feeling down”. Hope this helps. Jess ✌🏻

truth. any head injury bad enough to cause loss of consciousness (best diagnosed as a gap in memory if not directly witnessed) or altered mentation (usually assessed by asking basic questions: I.E. where they are, what day it is, who their home's political leader is, and how many of a common coin make up the next denomination) OR UNUSUAL SLEEPINESS, you need to be assessed with proper medical hardware. but if they are injured enough that they might not wake up, you're not going to be stopping them from falling asleep.

I fell asleep hours after receiving a skull fracture with subdaural hematoma. The ER quack sent me home since I didn't l lose consciousness after being struck by the rear shovel of a backhoe. He said, "If you didn't lose counsciousness you don't have a concussion so you can go home." My GP said the next day, "Oh shit, you have a fractured skull." It wasn't the first either. This wasn't the first or last time doctors flippantly disregarded my condition. Loving the Blaze Simon!!! The staying awake after a concussion thing is more that if you have something go wrong to the point of needing medical help it will be much more likely to be noticed if your awake. Where if you were asleep it will probably be too late to get help by the time its noticed.

I worked with the Red Cross a bunch of times as a kid (20 years ago...), not as a first aider but as a bucket holder while my Mum dealt with the concussions - often at horse events so there were a lot of them. Based on that and being a concussion patient myself more often than I can recommend, your understanding 100% matches mine - not sleeping is entirely for monitoring. If someone has a bleed on the brain or something, you won't notice deterioration if they're asleep until it's far too late. The myth part is probably because concussion symptoms can last months but the staying awake thing is just long enough to rule out serious damage, so a few hours I guess. Context of my experience is just to say I've heard it from people who know what they're on about, but am not one of those myself 😄 I was not allowed to sleep for about 8 hours after my 2 somewhat serious concussions though...most recently 2018 on Christmas day - I cannot recommend using your face to stick a hole in a wall, pro tip there.

Oh, on the sound bit, you can absolutely make inferences based on how objects affect ambient noise. Like, let’s walk down a hallway. You have a hard block wall to your right, but then you pass a turn. You can practically *feel* the emptiness of the hall opening to your side. You keep walking. You pass a cork board or cloth hanging on the wall. Again, you can feel the way the softer material just “sucks up” sound. It almost feels like a change in air pressure. I’m not blind, I just took notes on these experiences during daily walks when I was younger walking along with my eyes closed. This perception is far from perfect, and it’s just a matter of chance that I ever took notice of it. My guess is anyone can do it, and perhaps everyone does to some extent. This experience may extend to the more peripheral sensations that you’re unwittingly attuned to, letting you know that something nearby has changed. Or it’s all in our heads.

Thirst unfortunately doesn't really work for me :/ If I only drink when I'm thirsty I get dehydrated. Pretty sure cats need water even on wet food. Just a lot less than a human would. I felt SO vindicated when I learned that the appendix has a function. It being completely useless never sat well with me, since I first learned about it when I was like six. As for the pain, my aunt had appendicitis years back, but it didn't hurt like a typical case, so the doctor missed it. Turned out it was only partially blocked, so less pain, but it festered, and she lost some of her intestine on top of the appendix because it had rotted.

I had some awful upper right abdominal pain in February, they sent me through the CT scanner and it turned out my appendix was "invaginated" (turned back inside out into my colon). Not an ordinary case at all, not the right place for pain, no fever, just STUPID appendix. It reverted on its own after a week so they decided not to take it out... so now I still have a STUPID appendix. Also, can we talk about the misogyny of the appendix being the wrong way around and being called "invaginated"???
@seatbelttruck
@seatbelttruck Ай бұрын
@@cheekyb71 Um... I suspected it was due to the etymological roots and not misogyny, and I seem to be right. The Online Etymological dictionaries says "vagina" is 'from specialized use of Latin vagina "sheath, scabbard, covering; sheath of an ear of grain, hull, husk"' So, similar to how the cervical spine has nothing to do with the cervix, because cervix comes from a root meaning "neck," referring to in one case neck bones and in the other the neck of the uterus. Similarly the vagina is shaped like a pocket or "sheath" of sorts, and your appendix turned inward also forming a sort of "sheath."

Change their water every time you feed em, please. If that's to hard, you can get a little cat fountain with a filter. They also vastly prefer running water, which is good survival advice. My cat prefers to drink from the fish pond, which has heaps of aquaponics plants attached, so it's always crystal clear and flowing. If you notice them licking the shower floor, you need to up the water game. Failure to do so can lead to incurable kidney failure, which isn't a nice way to go. Get your cat a drink.

My favourite touch-based trick is to feel my keys bittings as I take them out of my pocket to select the right key for the door I'm in front of. I basically never turn on the light in the staircase (and even on, it's quite dark anyway/light is not too bright), so that's a useful trick I've used since I was a child. My favourite sound-based one (aside from the one Dave mentioned about filling things with water; nearly all containers, no matter the shape/size make the same sound related to the ratio of liquid inside it to container volume... super useful to fill partially accurately without looking, too!) is using the sound of noisy RC oscillators in large electronics (like TVs, etc.) to know if a device is on or off from a different room! Super helpful to know without having to walk over! My favourite smell-based one is to tell who farted by the smells. Even in a crowded room, I can tell who's it is if I been around them long enough lol... ok, not SUPER useful, but funny knowledge to have, lol... My favourite sight-based one is to remember where (nearly) everything was left out by my partner around the house without actually spending any effort to remember. I just will casually respond to "where is X?" questions from my partner with the exact location most of the time or the most likely top 2-3 if I actually didn't see it. My taste sense is actually pretty crap, so no tricks with that one... lol... I don't know if my neurodiverse brain (ADHD, dyslexia, possibly autism) is an important factor in learning how to do all these things over time, but they always felt like obvious and simple skills to pick up at the time and only in my 20s did I realize that most people are, actually, really incompetent with anything but sight-based tasks (and even then... lol...).

Please be careful with the antibiotics and alcohol stuff. I have been on one of these that are affected by alcohol. From Mayo Clinic: What are the effects of drinking alcohol while taking antibiotics? Antibiotics and alcohol can cause similar side effects, such as stomach upset, dizziness and drowsiness. Combining antibiotics and alcohol can increase these side effects. A few antibiotics - such as metronidazole (Flagyl), tinidazole (Tindamax), and sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim (Bactrim) - should not be mixed with alcohol because this may result in a more severe reaction. Drinking any amount of alcohol with these medications can result in side effects such as flushing, headache, nausea and vomiting, and rapid heart rate. Also, the antibiotic linezolid (Zyvox) interacts with certain alcoholic beverages, including red wine and tap beer. Drinking these beverages with this medication can cause a dangerous increase in blood pressure. Keep in mind that some cold medicines and mouthwashes also contain alcohol. So check the label and avoid such products while taking these antibiotics. Although modest alcohol use doesn't reduce the effectiveness of most antibiotics, it can reduce your energy and delay how quickly you recover from illness. So, it's a good idea to avoid alcohol until you finish your antibiotics and are feeling better.

I went to pick up a patient once from the hospital when I was in EMT and was doing a transfer, it said it was a cycling accident and that the patient was blind. I could not stop laughing. This of course meant that he was legally blind without his glasses, but I still enjoyed getting that page

yeah, after more than 5 concussions in my 14-year US Army career... i was told each time by the medic to, "Don't nod off! Keep talking with me... Even grunting or saying a word or two is good... You still with me? We'll get there soon, stay awake, you hear me?" every time, all the time i was hospitalized before the full testing regimen was finished somebody was with me 100% of the time checking my AVPU levels or just being a nice person and such. each answer i got on the, 'so why do you guys keep me lucid each time?' kinda ran the gamut from the simplistic, 'because that's what we were taught', to a neurologist that checked me out on my exit physical leaving the Army and helping me navigate a few things with the VA said it best... "If you pass out at all it is a sign that concussion is worse than just a simple knock on the head. We keep you awake to make sure we can gage how you're responding before we do the detailed imaging and everything is clear." later on a VA doc, really REALLY old guy, like my 60+ year old granpa's age... doing my workups also added, "We want you awake till we see you, and the 'old wives' tale' changed over time. it used to say, 'don't fall asleep with a bump on the head before you see a doctor.' Meaning, we want to see you SOON after you hit your head. So don't just go home, ignore it, and sleep it off that evening."

Fun story about alcohol: I worked with a guy who was denied some licence or certification or whatever because he had honestly answered a similar question. The thing was, at the time, he was working third shift (2300 to 0700) and he would frequent a pub that catered to people on such a schedule and the question was "Do you frequently drink alcohol before 10 AM?" A positive answer was a primary indicator of alcoholism, according to the standards of the this particular interview. Basically, acording to them, if you have one beer, every Friday after work at 0800, you are an alcoholic. I think this all occurred over 30 years ago.

I remember my mam waking me up every 30 mins or so when i had a mild concussion after getting hit by a car. She swore that the nurse at A&E had told her this. I'd totally forgotten about it until watching this video. 😅

Cats don't *often* need to drink *in the wild* because they get most of their moisture from what they hunt. But they still drink sometimes to supplement their fluid levels. This is one reason domestic cats tend to have kidney stones, they don't drink enough or they eat too much dry food. Also, cats are generally lactose intolerant. They like the fat in milk (fat to them is like sugar to Americans), but it doesn't do anything good for their stomachs.

My dad was in the Marine Corps in the early 80s and while on one of his long marches during boot his appendix ruptured 4 miles from base, his CO made him bring himself back to the medical wing. He said he crawled the whole way back and barely had enough strength when he got there to tell them what had happened.

When I was concussed, after waiting around in the ER for 4 hours, I got a handout saying that people concussed should have someone stay the night with me and wake me every 2-3 hours to make sure I'm okay and acting normally. I'd just moved to town and had 2 roommates I'd met like twice since I moved in, so they couldn't, and my best friend (the only one in town) couldn't stay with me because her son (9) couldn't stay home alone. Since I'd just moved I had no furniture so they couldn't come here. So I slept through the night, by myself. And I woke up. A later CT scan showed no brain bleeding, so it was okay. I just had a TAI (traumatic axonal injury). [ETA for clarity]

I had always heard that if you hit your head, you should not go to sleep until you've seen a doctor. Once the doctor clears you, then you can go to sleep.

As someone who has managed and worked in a “black out” haunted house maze, I can absolutely verify that a sighted person can learn to detect people based on the way the sound changes in a room. We had a whole team of actors that we first had them navigate with lights on, then blindfolded (so they can actually take it off and look if they need to still), then lights off. And then during the the actual haunt we gave customers an intentionally dim and faulty led candle to move about. Some people do it unconsciously, some do it with practice. We would bang on walls, whisper just infront or behind people, and loudly walk around them to get a scare, as well as using different voices. And we never touched anyone except for occasionally each other when sneaking through hidden passages. The boiling water thing is very cool though I never thought about the concept to that extent.
