Nicely done tour. I was the deputy commander on a crew of one of these in Kansas. I found this B&B recently and we are getting ready to head off to NM soon to stay here. Like a homecoming for me and a chance for my wife and show her what I did, where I worked, in my younger days. This one may be unique in that most of them flooded once they were decommissioned and the sump pumps turned off; here the actual missile silo appears to be dry and totally visible, without the missile however.

Thank you for watching the video! I'm glad that you enjoyed it. Having worked in one of these, I'm sure you will appreciate how they have stood up to the test of time. Both of the silos that we visited are dry, something I was also surprised to see. Enjoy your trip and tell everyone we said hello!

I grew up in Roswell and have been down these silos several times. There are at least 2 on every highway going out of Roswell. Some are more dangerous since they were never completed and you may just find yourself wondering off into a 10 story drop into the abyss. Of course back then (80's) they were all abandoned and in ruin. Some were just a sheer drop into twisted metal and deep water. I don't recall seeing it in the video but that circular control room also had huge springs under the lower level floor that could keep the room level during a blast.

Wow! 😲 That's really cool. It's hard to believe so many of these exist. It's also really cool that you got to explore them as well.

Been in both of these back when I was High School. We used to go in them, drink beer and smoke weed. The first one you were in looks like it's the one on the east side of Roswell past Comanche Hill. We could never get all the way down in that one. The second one you were in looks like the one West of Roswell. We would go out there at night and climb all the way down. Back then there wasn't any LED flashlights, it was the old school incandescent ones with the D size batteries that didn't put out much light. So it was creepy! I remember that green control cabinet at the bottom and the water looks same. That was almost 50 years ago! It's amazing what you do when you're a crazy teenager and think you're invincible. That pipe that is sticking out 12:23. I had a friend climb out on that thing while drunk. It was insane! Thanks for the video, it brings back memories of some crazy times.

As you said, "I can't believe I'm standing where ICBM nuclear warhead once stood." I get the same sort of feeling of awe in talking with an ol' boy (93-years-old) I know, thinking, "I can't believe this guy used to carry thermo-nuclear bombs in a B-52 and loiter over the northern U.S.S.R. border waiting for an order to go in an drop them" (during operation Chrome Dome).
@TheBrothersWorkshop12 күн бұрын
Wow! That would be wild. Wish I could hear the stories.
@michaelquillen267910 күн бұрын
@@TheBrothersWorkshop He has lots of stories. First time I met him, I said, "So you flew the B-52. What was that like?" His reply, very straight-faced, was, "Easy to drive, hard to park." Gives you an idea of his personality. In speaking with him about Chrome Dome missions, he has talked about things like the multiple refuelings with tankers, how the Northern Lights could spell trouble with visual references, and how the missions were 23-27 hours long, depending on winds. He is also upfront about his flying Operation Linebacker II (the Christmas bombings) during Vietnam, but does not like to dwell on that subject. Thrills the hell out of me listening to his stories. He flew the B-52D from 1958 to 1983 (when the D model was retired from service). He is living history!

There are 3 atlas missile bases in washington state , warden , odessa , and royal city . The missiles where on carrier that took the missle up to the surface then from there it would launch . Took 15 minutes to prep for launch and fueling was the most dangerous part . Odessa site is dry
