I don't understand why the Japanese were portrayed as so shocked by the Portuguese policies in the show. The show is supposed to take place in the early 1600s, so the Japanese would have had communication and trade with Europeans for nearly a century already. They would've had Portuguese imports for many decades as well. Japan and the Ming Dynasty had close relations, and the Ming even fought several battles with the Portugese in the early 1500s - long before the time of the show. You would think the people in the show should have long known Portuguese policy, the European maps of the world, etc.

Its a refresher, i also view Christianity as a oppressing religion, however i can understand why he ask the question of if jesus is god, since religion has always been a branch of difference. Though Buddhism should not be too different from each culture when it comes to the core value, and Buddha not being a god but a person who was awakened, compared to jesus being a child of god and/or is the god. Buddhism also is not well translated same as many of the philosophy to the English language, and our words have different meaning which is harder to differentiate into the English methods.

And, for more context, the Franciscans were heavily involved in missionary work in the Americas following the Spanish conquests. This order attempted the same methods of evangelization in Japan, in contrast with the Portuguese experience with the Jesuits. So the Portuguese were not very interested to promote the Franciscan methods as these were less inclined to adopt local customs and practices. Jesuit relations with the Japanese rulers was crucial to protect and expand trading. And further more we Portuguese were never interested in conquering Japan or hide our presence there. That would have been really dumb.

I dont know if this is ever mentioned, but on the point of Christian Daimyos, currently, one of the lords from this time period is being canonized as a saint in the Catholic Church. Justo Takayama Ukon was a lord born in Yamato Province, converted to Catholicism when he was 11 years old, and was one of those who outspoke against Hideyoshi's restrictions on Christians. He left Japan in 1614 when the Tokugawa Shogunate officially banned Christianity among the Daimyo. So Takayama fled to Manila and is now highly revered in the Manila Cathedral as well as among the Catholics still in Japan.

One thing about the assassin is that she could have been trained in fighting in darkness. In the show they would not be able to shoot the scene in darkness, so there had to be some light but we had to imagine these characters fighting nearly blind. I believe that she even made a show of snuffing out some light sources. This would also have been a last ditch attempt to get rid of Blackthorne since you would not squander such a highly trained agent lightly.

The priest who had been confined in the prison with Blackthorn was a Spanish Catholic of the Franciscan Order, not a protestant. He had come to Japan as a missionary, and ran afoul of the Jesuits. The Spanish Catholic Church and The Portuguese Jesuit Order of the Catholic Church were at odds in the competition to acquire new converts in the Americas, in Africa, in India, and certainly in the Japans during this period. The Spaniard had been placed in the prison at the insistence of the head of the Order in Japan. Toranaga knew of this man, that he spoke fluent Japanese, and therefore Toranaga had Blackthorn put in with him. Not only to save Blackthorn from Ishido, but to have the old priest teach him Japanese. In the book and fist series, the priest explained to Blackthorn that the Japanese did not consider imprisonment to be punishment; it was instead only a place to warehouse the accused until their punishment (usually a form of crucifixion for the lower orders) was decided. This was not even mentioned in the latest version of Shogun, but it was dealt with heavily in the book and in the first miniseries.

I think the reason they speak English when they should be speaking Portuguese is a hold over from the book that was actually a technique used to increase immersion. We see and discover Japan through the lens of John Blackthorn and to me it was always a conscious and brilliant choice to give the reader the proper feeling of familiarity when dealing with the Portuguese and highlight the feeling of strangeness and being lost until he slowly learns and becomes familiar with Japanese. Blackthorn is fluent in English and Portuguese so it's all put in English which the reader is familiar with and understands to give the feeling of being Blackthorn more than the literal experience, if Blackthorn knows and understands it's put in English so the reader understands it and feels familiar. The Japanese is foreign to Blackthorn so it's treated as foreign to the reader to give that sense of lost and slowly coming to understanding as Blackthorn does. As an Italian who is fluent in Japanese I think the effect is lost on you. It's not a safe harbor of familiarity with your mother tongue among a sea of foreign and unknown words to you. As someone who only speaks English it makes the scenes with the other europeans feel more familiar and safe, and as a reader you feel yourself relax a bit even though you know they're frenemies and it's not safe. I imagine very much the feeling Blackthorn would have. It feels safer naturally psychologically because of familiarity, but you know it isn't and Blackthorn may be in more familiar but more dangerous waters. It's always been one of those nice flourishes I loved about the story. But you my friend are naturally immune to the effect due to education. I'm actually a bit sad you miss out on that experience. Well that's my opinion anyway. I could be wrong. Have a good day boss. Thanks for the entertainment and education. Peace ✌️🕊️

This was the only review i actually cared to see, since his background makes him tht best suited to give the reviews (at least out of the channels i subscribe to). I hope it's not months until Ep 3. As for the show: out of sheer coincidence i read the book for the first time last summer. I had no idea that they were doing an adaptation until a month or so after i finished reading it, so it was fresh in my head the series aired. If current and future writers, producers and directors are planning on doing an adaptation of a book, and you're going to deviate from the source material, this series should serve as a blueprint of how to do it well. The things that made it on screen didn't deviate too much . The biggest change in the narrative was the romantic relationship between Blackthorn and Mariko. Personally i believe this to be a good thing. I found their relationship in the book to be super cringy. Especially when they were talking to each other in Latin, and it was all "from whence," "i love thee,"etc. Yikes 😬. They did some changes with side characters, mostly with whether they existed or not in both forms of media. In general they did a GREAT job with the characters. In the show, they would say or do all the same things they did in the book, yet the characters had a completely different feel to their book counterpart. Yabo felt cold and cruel in the book. Yet in spite of the fact he did a lot of the same things he did in the book (like boiling the prisoner alive), he was somehow far more likeable in the series. Ochiba from the novel fits the "dragon lady" trope to a T, while in the series I found her to be a much more sympathetic character. But mostly the changes were in what parts and characters they decided to focus on. In the book, Blackthorn is very much the lead character, in the series the focus is far more on Toranaga. We see this happening a lot over the last several years, where a white male character will either be completely race and possibly gender swapped for a black lesbian or something, or they'll diminish a brave character into an incompetent coward. It almost never works. I think the main reason itdoesn't is because the decision to change the character has nothing to do with with the story, it was political one. It doesn't help that they all seem to have a gift for making their own spite and contempt so blatantly obvious that you'd have to be far on the spectrum to not be able to suss it out. I get none of that with Shogun. The entirety of the series just reenforces that the decision was a narrative based one and not at all political. *Toranaga's confusion over Catholic vs protestant is completely understandable. Id imagine that monotheism in general might be confusing to people who aren't. Then you're telling them that not only is there one god, but that different segments of it's worshippers hate each other over relatively obscure bits of doctrine. That would likely be confusing to them. Hell, it's confusing to me and i grew up in a Christian country. 🤷♂️

I think you missed the distinction that Ishido was making between the Portuguese priest and what he referred to as "the heretic" barbarian. His "dogs face" criticism is levelled exclusively at Blackthorn because he is the first northern European they have seen, other than the Dutch on the same ship.Northern Europeans even now have much more white skin, predominantly green, grey or blue-eyes, and a variety of light or dark coloured hair. Back in 1600 this would have been an even greater distinction, especially considering the Spanish/Portuguese peninsular had just kicked out the Moors who had integrated for 800 years. The Portuguese monks would have all had brown eyes and brown hair (as is the majority nowadays) and in this way similar to the Japanese. The Protestants appearance would have been a lot more shocking to the Japanese, hence the quote "what are they"? By the Japanese army official seeing Blackthorn for the first time, despite the Portuguese priests having been there for 50 years and also the quote "is it true he has blue-eyed"?

Very informative! One request - when referencing a period, if you could also mention dates in the standard dating system that would be very helpful. For example, when you say “chopsticks had been used since the Haiyu Period”, I have no idea if that’s 300AD or 1400AD. Great content, thank you 🙏🏻

I binge-watched the original Shogun (the series is archived if you look for it) before starting the new version. The original was better but this remake was very good.
