I used to be a keen cyclist up in the East Mids and although we had our share of idiots, London was a massive shock. I drove through there the other year and idiots were bunny hopping of kerbs in front of me just asking to be hit. it was one of the most stressful days of my life as there wasn't just one or two but hundreds of these suicidal idiots all looking to get a claim in.

One or the other works great, but both together is a recipe for disaster. @@Momofan69 The "victim" here is the lorry driver. They were talking about reporting the driver for something that was actually their own fault, and that could affect the driver's livelihood. The cycling clown - in fact all of the cycling clowns - illegally continued straight forward from a turn left only lane, actively placing themselves in a lorry driver's blind spot as they did so. That's Darwin Award type behaviour. Low IQ types like that should stick to using buses.

Fortunately, I've started to see actual punishment though. Perth in Scotland, the police have been pulling cyclist for going too fast and fining them. Hertfordshire, the police have pulled cyclists as well.

As someone who cycles and drives HGV's, no. Cyclists will take a left lane despite, road markings, wherever possible if they're going straight on because it's a safer and more convenient place for everybody. It's the same with big roundabouts where you'll stick to the outside lane and indicate your intention to carry on around so that you don't have the danger of having to change lanes. What the HGV driver did was, despite knowing there were cyclists on his nearside, and he would have known because some were ahead of him so he should have been checking his mirrors. Then, instead of carrying on in the lane he was in, he needlessly moves into the left lane without indicating where he should have been pretty much anywhere except the curb. He should have either stayed in the right land or been taking a central position to stop idiots from trying to overtake before the laces merged. Whilst the advice is to not go on the inside of a HGV, the cyclists didn't. They were in the left lane.

he was not 100% in the right, you can see what was happening seconds after they all pull off, moving at all in that situation makes you far from 100% in the right. its scary how many ppl think the correct reaction is to drive into people instead of stop. like in that moment the driver chose potential death, thats never the right call. he stopped and explained that he knew they were there and what they did, he just admitted he choose the deadly option.

Agree, there is absolutely no way the lorry could have known the cyclist was there/intending to go straight on. As a cyclist myself I know you don’t go down the inside of a lorry, and there’s even campaigns in cycling magazines/blogs etc. to make yourself more visible to lorry drivers. 100% the cyclists fault and looks to me that the other cyclists there also need to relearn the rules of the road

Also, the lorry itself was missing an additional mirror for the near side that could’ve aid in this not happening. It is not a "wrong" lane. The arrow is only an advisory marking, meaning you can legally go straight if it is safe to do so in the given circumstances. Which it wasn't in this case.

This Highway Code rule explicitly states you should get in the appropriate lane as directed.True, it's not a "must" rule, so is not an offence in itself, but it can be taken into account for civil liability in the event of an accident, or for charges such as careless driving. In the video shown, it was clearly not safe to ride in a lane marked for left turn on and then go straight on. A thoroughly stupid thing to do, just from a self interest point of view. Rule 134 You should follow the signs and road markings and get into the lane as directed. In congested road conditions do not change lanes unnecessarily. Merging in turn is recommended but only if safe and appropriate when vehicles are travelling at a very low speed, e.g. when approaching road works or a road traffic incident. It is not recommended at high speed.

Lorry driver is wrong, it's not a left turn only lane and no laws were broken by the cyclists. If it's a legal 'left turn only' then it has those words written on the road, sometimes along with a white arrow on a blue circle background. The arrow markings at this junction are 'advisory' not mandatory. Often, there will be a left arrow where a bus lane is interrupted, but buses and cyclists will go straight on. Unfortunately, this junction does not have an Advanced Stop Line for cyclists. Cyclists filtering to the front are left with no option other than use that left lane or jump the red light. In a situation like this, I would choose my moment, anticipate the lights turning green and get a head start on the lorry driver. Much safer than hoping the lorry driver is competent and careful (unlike this example).

The cyclists inthe left turn lane with the truck in London, show a complete lack of responsibility for their own safety. They were all in the drivers blind spot. If it had been a car that tried the same manoeuvre the driver would have been deemed completely wrong. People have to learn to be responsible for their own actions and safety and not be so ready to blame others. As a cyclist and HGV driver myself I would never go up along the side of a truck or any large vehicle as those cyclists did.

I looked again at the cyclist that collided with the truck. Before he took off he was directly beside the truck and then moved slightly ahead as they both progressed. He doesn't appear to check where the truck is as he moves forward. Other cyclists on the left hang back as everyone moves. The driver also has traffic coming up on his right. If the driver has to be aware of cyclists, the cyclists also has to be aware of other vehicles and behave accordingly. It's a shared space.

It never fails to amaze me how some cyclists expect motorists to act in a way that helps protect them but they can't take responsibility for their own actions to help protect them selves. If you're OK with the cost of driving going up by about 20% for the next decade or two to pay for the addition of an extra lane on all motorways then I'm sure the government would happily scrap smart motorways. It's just frustrating that all of the major motoring groups are against smart motorways but also against paying extra to drive - as if they think several tens of billions of quid will just fall out of the air and pay for all of the extra lanes spanning the country.

The government ignored the recommendations on the distance between refuges to save even more money and the cherry on the cake is that the road monitoring system doesn't work and they no longer close lane 1 to allow vehicals to clear the refuge as this causes congestion... I was driving over the Thelwall viaduct shortly before the crash. I am generally quite a fast driver, but conditions that day were terrible (high risk of aquaplaning). I was doing about 55-60 mph in the inside lane, and I was one of the slowest on the motorway at the time. People were doing 80+ mph in the outside lane, about 10m away from each other. I am surprised there were not more accidents. So many nowadays seem to drive the same no matter what the conditions are: utter madness!

Me too, same time same day and it was chucking it down horrendously. I drive an hgv and it amazes me how close people drive in these situations. The vehicle at the front eases off…the one behind has to gently brake…the second one behind has to squeeze a bit harder on the brakes…until soon they’re having to brake really hard. Braking distances are in the Highway Code and it’s mad how people chuck it out the window when they think they’ve mastered driving

The cyclist changed lane and, as a result, nearly caused himself to be killed. He really needs to consider giving up cycling here, or at least pass a Cyclist Proficiency Test, if there still is such a thing. If a car had performed the same manoeuvre, people should figure who would be deemed to blame for causing the accident. 1:10 illustrates why no hard shoulder is such a hazard. The guy towing the caravan started it when he hit a stationary car, stopping suddenly. The lorry driver's view was obscured by the caravan so he couldn't have seen the stationary car and then hit the caravan.

Another cyclist with a Death Wish. There was no cycle lane marked on the road, the lane the cyclists (plural) were in was marked 'Left Turn Only'. They were all going straight over, so they were in the wrong lane. The fact that other cyclists backed him up shows they're every bit as stupid and ignorant as the guy who nearly got himself killed. How the hell did he expect the lorry driver to see him, as any driving mirror has a blind spot, especially HGVs.that's why if you're going to overtake (or worse still, as here, undertake any vehicle you need to take extra care? I'd say the HGV driver here did well to even pull up and realise he had a cyclist between him and the kerb. Cyclists seem to think they're a law to themselves.

In the hierarchy of traffic on the roads, cyclists are second only to pedestrians, trucks are at the bottom of that hierarchy, and yield to all other traffic. I have just completed my theory, hazard perception and CPC training to to become a truck driver. One of the question asks: If cyclists are in the left hand lane, which direction could they be going? The answer is in any direction, as cyclists are supposed to be in the left hand lane. Finally, when faced with an incident the truck driver is supposed to remain calm at all times. This incident is entirely the fault of the truck driver, as they are the professional drivers in this incident.

The question you have to ask yourself, if he had driven like that during his vehi Le test, whlould he have passed, or failed? You know the answer as well as I do, he would have failed.

The rules are no different for cyclists. They ro not have automatic right to get to the front every time. And yes i have had hgv and bus licence 27years and CPC. The cyclists should have been in the right hand lane and the lorry would've stopped behind them.

A friend of mine who's a trunker told me years ago when the speed limit came down to 60,"there will be loads of hgv crashes" I asked how he worked that out because tyres would blow out less, and his reply was unreal! He said truckers will get board at that speed! He wasn't wrong! Brewing up, watching KZbin vids, texting, emailing and god knows what else. We're supposed to be proffesional drivers fgs.

It's about time we made our motorways safer. There isn't anywhere more dangerous to break down than a motorway. Some motorways have no hard shoulder for miles, and those extremely dangerous smart motorways allow the hard shoulder to become a live lane, meaning anyone who breaks down is risking their car at the very least. If you break down on a motorway, NEVER stay in your car or leave children or pets (make sure pets are on leads or in carriers, never carry them loose near the road and make sure children are under supervision at all times) inside the car, ever, no matter how safe you think it might be. If you break down on a motorway, it should be treated as urgently as a 999 emergency and recovery crews should have a target time to get to you of say no longer than twenty minutes. Always use the free emergency phones located on motorways if you break down, don't use your mobile. Using the free emergency phone allows rescue crews to find you much easier. Always put your hazard lights (fog lights too if it's foggy) on and get behind the barrier. You do NOT need to use your warning triangle on a motorway, it's too dangerous. I hope someone reads this and it makes them think =/

I'm a class one truck driver for motorsport. I drive in the UK, mainly europe and the USA and also a keen cyclist. I can tell you now the truck driver is NOT in the wrong! You get these people who hold down a really good job, get into cycling but have no common sense, especially on a bike! The same people who wear a helmet and have no lights riding through London at night!🤦‍♂

Not always you would be surprised if drove one how quickly something comes up in front of you and you have to check mirror and change lane often something already there and your hoping/trying to change lane before stopping and it's all in a second!. Been/Seen/done/Seen results."Scarey". I have had a few lucky ones! one was on the M6 i was over taking another Artic when a prat just drove off hard shoulder not even 100 yards in front of him i saw/read it and stuck myself out into outside lane(not allowed out there)so gave him room or if would have hit car it would have been Death! another was on M4 prat with family came of services down slip road at around 30mph then pulled across into carriageway in front of me i was fully loaded with steel tubes! i had brake pedal to the floor nothing left as brakes juddering i couldn't move over then moved got past and luckily nothing behind it got over and missed that car by feet! and not many of them!.could almost read the tiny letters at bottom of number plate! plus no phones back then! But people never realise or think about trucks on the road they take far longer to stop, need more room to manoeuvre, they can't see you so well and so much more

A friend of mine lost both his parents last year due to a pile up on the m40 I think early morning and they got hit from behind.. motorway was blocked for hours all due to being hit from behind. So sad life changing. Life will never be the same for him and his family.

Some HGV drivers do take the piss and are on their phones but there are more good ones than bad. The average car driver and cyclists in particular are so much more dangerous.

It's about time the Highway Code came up to date with common sense and made the rule that the most manoeuvrable road user gives way to the least manoeuvrable.
