Hi Danny, how you only have 62k subscribers is beyond me! For anyone looking to purchase speakers, your channel is a must! Anyway, understand how actual work time pressures affect your ability to do videos, but you really should do some sort of recommendations / rankings on regular speakers.. Obviously theres more to a speakers sound than just crossovers and poly caps, however your commentary on the quality of the componants and "value" of the speakers goes beyond all of that and acts as a guide (i should think) that gives people a reason to pause before shelling out the big dollars on a shiny new set of speakers. Keep up he great work!

I recently built a pair of full range speakers with 4" drivers from Mark Audio and I agree that the sound stage width and depth is very impressive with them. Nothing for playing loud, but natural instruments, voices - wow!

The X-Max is not an issue though when passing everything from about 350Hz and down to a larger driver. They are still designed for specific applications and I do want my customers to understand what they are for.

As someone with a small listening room I wish every speaker I have would naturally roll off high and fast. These designs make a lot of sense and a video explaining why avoiding a slow rolloff to achieve some deep bass is helpful might prevent some future criticism from people who wish every speaker was flat to 20hz.

i think what people really want is a flat sounding frequency response to their ears, and sometimes a speaker that measure flat will get room gains and get boomy. when you get access to full parametric equalization you find that out fast.

I used to be upset because my hearing tested well above 20khz. I could hear ultrasonic sensors. Now, it craps out around 13.5khz. So LOTS of speakers sound just great!

I do understand what you mean. When younger I could hear the oscillators on an analog TV (well we weren’t always in a digital age) when I sat close and the sound was turned down and now my hearing drops off just above 12kHz in my right ear and a bit higher in my left. I can now look at tweeter response graphs and vaguely remember when I used to hear pretty high up in the frequency spectrum. So now my speaker demands are a bit less particular than they used to be. It is what it is.

Protip is to do a a serious ear-cleanup with wax dissolvents baught from the pharmacy, and you will retain a couple of thousand hz of hearing when done. You DO have better hearing than you think, just clean those ears out.

Small room is a bedroom. 10x10, 10x14, something like that. Medium is 15x15, 15x18, large I consider to be my personal living room, 20x22 with 11 foot ceilings and open to the kitchen and outside. When you sit 3+ meters from the speaker, you need more clean output. When you need to fill a large room, you need more clean output and wider dispersion. These, are not large room speakers, as they can't play super loud nor super clean at high volume, nor do they have a good dispersion characteristic due to the wideband drivers beaming. Small room, some toe in, should be fine. Big rooms require big output, it's just physics 🤷‍♂️

I don't think I'd want an rear firing driver on the center though. A center channel is supposed to be a bit more directional as it has to anchor its output to the video screen.

@@Hiluxtaco There is a big difference in a tweeter playing 4db hotter than a woofer across the board, and a peak well above the treble and into the top octave harmonics. The wide band driver drops off faster in the off axis than a tweeter. So by 10 degrees off axis it is already pretty flat. If it were a wide dispersion dome tweeter this would be a different situation. I completely address this in the video as well.

If you have a small untreated room then the NX-Tremes are not even a consideration. These little speakers excel in that application. They were designed for it. In our large room they come close to the NX-Tremes in the vocal area and in transparency, but they get crushed in every other way.

I love the look of these. Really is making me think. Just one question, Danny- have you considered, or would you consider doing something similar with the NX Studios? In other words, do an NX Studio with extra bass drivers in a sealed cabinet. With a typical dome tweeter you get wider dispersion. So if you have that much of a peak in the on axis it might not drop off until 30 degrees or more off axis, and that might be too much to tow them out. Towing them out that much or more might create too much side wall reflection in those areas.

The range still extends to 20kHz. The rear firing driver puts those upper level harmonics in the room in such a way as to open up the sound stage further and create a 3 dimensional sound field.

I wish you had a showroom or a dealer displaying your designs so people could listen to them in say Central Florida , North East, MidWest and central West Coast .... Than those dealers/showrooms could accept orders so you could ship direct from your TX warehouse to customers. It makes even more sense knowing how innovating and unique some of your designs are so it may present a gamble or risk for some potential buyers . Awesome video and product Danny. Thanks. I was thinking that Encores (or some smaller closed back design) were going to be my solution - until I watched this... In my very-small living room, with small couch seating against three of the walls, and an opening into a kitchen on the back wall, these would need to bookend the couch on the front wall and most of the time sit a foot from the wall (or less), and directly on the floor. For such a compromised environment, could these potentially eek out some level of 3D soundstage experience, or be putting out just a wall of sound?

See the LGK 2.0 driver on our site: gr-research.com/product/lgk-woofer/ The LGK driver uses all air core inductors, JB poly caps, and the Dayton Copper resistors. The lower woofer use an Super Q inductor and a poly cap.

The video you are referring to was of a guy that just had an axe to grind, and he took the LGK 2.0 (3" driver only with 1mm of X-Max) and just over drove it with a full range signal. Who would try to play a single 3" driver (not even a pair of speakers) into the 90 plus db range with a full range signal? They are designed for a desk top. This version handled ever bit of the 120 watt, tube mono blocks could throw at them with zero issues.

I know I've heard others say that the NXtremes have dynamic range to spare, but I would love to know the realistic levels associated with the various speakers - even if it was a side note in the descriptions or specifications? Also, I was curious if the charts that you put together have anything to do with the "limits" of a speakers range before breaking up? I think I just don't understand enough about the way speakers are measured - ie. are they measured at their limits? Thanks again for all you do. Love the content and your passion for all of this!

@@michaelharness3258 The T2 is a more versatile 3 way speaker. It is good in all areas. You can use them in a number of applications and room sizes. The LGK 2.4 will best it slightly in transparency and in the vocal region. I'd give them an edge in imaging too. They will also work better in smaller untreated rooms. The T2's have about 5db higher sensitivity and will play louder and lower.

Hello folks. Rear firing tweeter has been around I would say back in the 70's. Woofers usually we would burn the voice coil that's paper or they lasted longer then aluminum ones that just wrap from to much power and rub and made noise. Yes you can find that the volume can go up to magical 11 with paper v.c. aluminum cough. Those burnt speakers make speakers stands as a teen on a no budget not low budget. So why not have fun so we ran them also back then speaker selecter switch A B and C on pre,-amp. OP The tweeters is set up like a super tweeter so the cut off is high just play around with different size if caps. Remember it's about what you like sampling all of life's pleasure and not to have it choices for you. Idea start at 8hz or 12 go up by twos to 18hz. Then buy a nice cap. Try beaming them st8 up also. Because you'll never know until you tied this and that. Many things was invented by flute. Upgrade mod Oh have the tweeter for you can change the angle in setting and matching them up to room. Why because rear wall both corners are not the same. Linn style Yes I'm still crazy Ride Easy

These look like really interesting and fun speakers! But looking at the website, I see the published frequency response for the tower 2.4 is 65-18kHz. Is this +/-3 dB? If so, I don't get why you would design a tower speaker with *4 woofers* that doesn't get full bass response without a sub. Make the bookshelves for use with a sub and the towers as a stand alone speakers. Grills would also be nice to keep the kiddos from touching things they shouldn't be.

Because, they were designed for small rooms. That is actually one of the biggest markets right now. So with the mains speakers not overloading the room, and lows dished off to subs with their own set of controls, it makes getting a balanced full range sound a lot easier to attain.

@@terrywho22 This design has numerous advantages. The four woofers sharing the lower end means fast settling times. Also the front and rear LGK drivers provide a more transparent and 3 dimensional sound field even when placed close to a wall. It also has a more controlled directivity. So it is more room friendly. If there is a market for towers that roll off bass quickly, glad you are helping those people out, but personally if I'm buying a tower, I want enough bass to omit the sub (for most music) thereby preserving time alignment and directionality (as you mention.) To each their own I suppose, and I know you know your market better than I do.

@@terrywho22 We've got models that don't require a sub: gr-research.com/product/old-school-brute/ However, full range towers can be disastrous in a small room and can overload them easily. Separating the lower range and giving the customer output level control over that range works great. The LGK 2.4 offers performance for those smaller rooms that simply can't be beaten by a full range speaker. Full range speakers are larger and wider. That hurts transparency and sound stage layering. Trade offs, trade offs... You have to consider your room as part of the system and build around it.

We are listening to them in a pretty big room and getting great sound, quality wise. All those things I talked about are there in spades. Without the servo subs they would get a little swallowed up by the room though. When switching back to the Brute model we get a much more room filling sound with solid bottom end that digs deep. I think our Brute is better suited for the bigger room.

Very nice looking speakers! I'm a fan of Definitive for their dipole approach and their built in subs. I think you made a great choice adding the rear speaker here. But I'm wondering about the spacing between the main driver and the woofers. I refuse to call that little thing full range! You already know why 😁. But did the measurements tell you that's where it belongs or was it done more for aesthetics? Also, I don't recall you mentioning, is this a 2 or 3 way on the tower? And too, are they all active drivers or do you have some passive radiators in the mix? Either way, they sure do look purdy and them numbers don't lie. Cheers 🍻

That's all you need to know that it is a "two-way" loudspeaker. Because the dipole wideband driver on the back has an HPF that the primary frontal one does not, you could, perhaps, technically call it a 2.5-way, but that's interminably debatable. He also stated that the four woofers are wired in series (and what that means for the impedance and power handling), which, again, is all you need to know that they are all "active drivers" and not passive radiators. What you call "industry standard terminology" is actually "industry standard" marketing lingo, not Engineering terminology or nomenclature.

By using a fultone element, you get less problems with time delay between elements, but you get a less good treble. A speaker where you have to sit in the middle and adjust the speaker exactly right to get good sound is not a good speaker. If you have a peak or coloring on a frequency, it must be removed with a crossover zobel circuit. If you ask me, I wouldn't have had a speaker that colors at this frequency, which you have to adjust exactly right for it to play well. My favorite is to use a tweeter that goes down to 1.5k example SEAS Exotic T35. and let it play quite far down in frequency while the bass/midrange does not go brighter than 1.5k. then you get a speaker that plays wide.

It’s not that simple. You’re right that the treble isn’t as good from a fullrange, that’s why they invented tweeters. And you’re right that “sweet spot” speakers are stupid and a result of lazy engineering. But a peak at 10k isn’t colouration in my book. There are no instruments with fundamental frequencies that high. It’s only air or sparkle, it’s ambience, it’s not the tone of the instrument or singer. People naturally have a large variance in the way they perceive frequencies that high. There is no correct or flat response in that range because everyone will hear it differently including the musician and the mastering engineer. I see it as an advantage being able to toe the speaker to you’re liking. Of course, ideally you have a supertweeter with a level control. But these speakers are not at that level

We notched out the peak in the 2.0 desktop model. However, with a design like this the over all in room response is more accurate if the slight on axis peak up top is left alone. There's a reason we invented tweets. All types of speaker elements have advantages and disadvantages. Midrange does not handle Treble very well. As another person said. "Sweet spot" speakers are stupid and a result of lazy engineering. We engineers must not be too lazy and take too many shortcuts!

There is a difference in having an un-even impedance and using it to control the low end.
