Big pro audio drivers can be amazing for hifi when done right. There’s so much headroom in terms of sensitivity and power handling, you can make them do whatever you want and there’s no need for ports or transmission lines to artificially pump the bass up. They don’t need it. Big clean bass, no group delay, big SPL. And they’re not expensive either.

Cerwin. Vega RE 30,s or RE 38,s High power handling, 4ohm, 97 or 103 spl.
@tigerstripeeyes98715 ай бұрын
@@peterrichard3706 ... Finally, somebody else on this planet comments about the Cerwin Vega RE38's!! I've had my pair for years and when your speakers have a frequency response of 20hz-20,000hz, are 103db in SPL, and are the size of small refrigerators with two HUGE ports in the rear for Earth-shaking bass.... what more could you ask for in this world?? LOL!! Now, I just need to get these over to Danny to do his magic on them... new, redesigned crossovers with higher end components, his upgraded internal wiring, tube connectors, and maybe even a better braced cabinet? Only issue is... they weigh like 99lbs. EACH!! ;) I was also thinking about using better mids and highs in them, but not sure of that complexity? Once, many years ago, I considered unplugging the mids & highs just so I could use them as subwoofers with my other higher-end speakers that have a more detailed/transparent upper end... but decided not to because I came across a Martin Logan Depth that went down to 18hz and a Theil SS-2 that goes down to a crazy 10hz!! My other more detailed speakers are more for critical listening, and with either of those subwoofers sound amazing, but these RE38's I use when I want to rock the entire neighborhood with some metal, like Quiet Riot's song "Metal Health"... it sounds CRAZY cool on these speakers with 400-500 watts coursing through them!! I even considered modifying them by disconnecting the mids/highs and using an Altec horn on top of them (like the 515b's I have). This way, their efficiency would probably be even higher AND they would be even louder yet more revealing, due to using a MUCH larger horn than they already have... but ANY horn would have to be VERY well damped with Dynamat/Blackhole in order to keep the metal from ringing. I can flick the 515 horn with my finger and it will ring... and stay ringing for many seconds! I even considered replacing the 15" red-ringed woofer with a Cerwin Vega Stroker 15" woofer that could handle way more power (they're the ones with no "red ring" but have two yellow spiders and a little metal "record player spindle-looking" thingee in the center of the dust cover area). But for that, I would need to redo the entire cabinet with 1" thick or thicker MDF in order to handle the even more violent bass which would come out of these monsters!! So that idea never came to fruition, but now I've come across a set of Altec Lansing MR-42B horns that came out of the old Houston Astro Dome and are 6' tall/deep, WITHOUT drivers attached! These normally use a single driver (like a 288H) but I found a factory Altec Lansing dual driver "Y" adaptor (which brings the depth down a foot or so!) online and I'm thinking of using one driver on each "Y" adaptor for mids and one driver on each for highs... some horn compression drivers play better in certain ranges and this would also allow me to "mix & match" drivers in order to get the best sound quality/integration. This way, the drivers won't have to play so wide of a range each and hopefully that will reduce distortion, at least in theory it should. LOL!! Thanks for bringing up the Cerwin Vega RE38's.... that made me smile ear-to-ear!!
@fido08259 күн бұрын
Interesting... but why not just keep the smaller stand speaker with the narrow baffle/tweeter, midrange speakers, add the woofer(s) in their own enclosures (er, subwoofer[s]), and have the advantages of both? Danny, Your explanation of baffle step compensation using a three way configuration was quite enlightening. So much so that I followed suit but with a single driver with a contour network in a TQWT enclosure. In order to not mess with speaker's impedance, I implemented the baffle step compensation using a toroid choke || Resistor to Resistor voltage divider at the output of a preamp. As a result I was able to move the -3dB roll-off point from 57Hz to 43Hz. Furthermore the compensation yielded much better LF vs MF phase alignment. Many thanks.

A fair price, especially for a three way configuration. There's nothing similar out there for the same amount. However, if I were in line for such a speaker, I might consider a simple two way (on your right) over it, coupled with a single servo woofer. I never managed to find a good compromise for a single speaker, either it's closer to the front wall, with a good low frequency output, or it's more into the room with completely lacking 'bass', but really enjoyable midrange and the rest of it.

Simple question: Why not simply use the Bravo bookshelves with a subwoofer? More flexible placing and less baffle area, no?
@FOH3663 Жыл бұрын
That's it, that's the issue ... What I call the power region. The 5.25″ woofer can't do what the 12" can do in the 80hz to 200hz region. The 12" handles it with minimal compression ... thus greater bass clarity and texture. I made a similiar mistake in the early 90's ... I switched to 6" two-way JBLs, supported by two Velodyne 15" subs. It performed great at low distortion deep bass, but impact and full texture in the power octave 80hz-160hz, it was lacking.

No, is not the Effect. I have a pair of TAD speakers that are wide (about 16 inc wide). There are the Yamaha NS-5000. Both those speakers well placed in a room, you do not hear them. Deal with the room, and they do disappear. Both are inert, that's the secret sauce. Do not toe them in. Leave them almost straight. The "transparency" is related to the wider high frequency dispersion on the small baffle. I feel a wider one sounds more natural. Do not over dampen your room. Dampen mids and it sounds so natural. I use this type of speakers. If I ever had to sell my TAD, I would buy these. Killer deal. This is to me the best type of speaker design out there after open baffle, but way easier to deal with in the room when you have no dedicated room. What a knock out! So the bullies will be a homage to B&W 808 I see :P

Great work! I'm saving my pennies as we speak.

There's no replacement for displacement. Couple it to a high impedance, and it is a recipe for success. Big speakers with large drivers and high impedance/sensitivity are the true high end, can't cheat physics.

Hi Danny, I just learned about GR Research yesterday and you've pulled me down the speaker design rabbit hole. I look forward to your review of your upcoming Bully and Beast speakers. Is there anywhere I can listen to your Old School or NX speakers near Orlando, FL? Thank you for your contribution to audio!

I have a question being I have a project I've been running on for about 2 years now. The speakers are 15" 3 way Jensen JHS 3315's. I was wondering, would acoustic foam on the baffle help with reflections on the baffle, or would it be a waste of time?

I love my Sansui SP200's, I honestly do not need anything else, pure gold.

You should replace ALL of the crossover parts in them with new, updated, higher-end components to get the best sound possible. Hey, what would be REALLY interesting would be if you sent them to Danny for him to better design/model & upgrade your crossovers so you get the best sound that speaker will ever be able to give you!! It's just an idea? ;)

To start with it seems the Acoustinator line was dropped by Eminence. What's the replacement for it? Second: can this "inductor+capacitor trick" be applied on a closed box separate subwoofer? Any hints on what values could be tried on an XSim simulation? My guess is the sensitivity of 12" bass drivers to use must be high, isn't it?

They werde produced for hkm in the Future 😅. Not interesting for Europa. Shipping. Tax. Overprized extra for germany. Same for crites speakers

Are these speakers mirrored? I couldn't tell from the video. Also, why not angle the side that is furthest from the M&T so that after it comes up above the woofer, it heads over very close to the tweeter, thus reducing the interaction with the baffle? You could make up the loss of internal volume by making a deeper or taller cabinet. It seems that something we've learned in the "modern speaker era" that's well worth retaining. Nice work and interesting video, bro!
