Hongshan zoo is the best wildlife zoo in China, from someone who lived in Nanjing for five years.

I loved this video. Do you know how old the zoo is? when was it established? I was in Nanjing for a month in 2017 and didn't know of it.

Thank you Cecile 🙏🏻😊 I also wasn’t familiar with it until recently. Apparently it opened in January 1954 and is the only zoo in China which is self-funded / privately owned. They rescue a lot of old animals and animals in need of help so it seems like a really nice place.

What were your expectations before visiting the zoo and how did it change after the visit?

Hi Tony thanks for your great questions. I have seen many zoos around the world in videos online and some look like the animals are kept in confined spaces and bad conditions. I much prefer animals to be living in the wild so I’m always a little bit skeptical about visiting a zoo, but can also see the benefits for some animals being there, especially older or endangered animals. This zoo seemed to be really nice, it was obvious a lot of care and love has been put into the zoo, especially with the attention to detail. The animals seemed happy as far as I can tell, at least there weren’t any obvious signs of them being unhappy / unwell. The enclosures looked clean and as big as I’ve seen before, although I have no idea what an appropriate size enclosure is. I went away with a good feeling about the place and will most likely visit again.

I hope the Chinese government also takes good care of the stray dogs and cat！The way they treat strays doesn't look like a civilized country! The Turkish government and its people have big hearts for the strays !

Yeah me too, there is a lot that can be improved in regards to animal welfare here. There are many Chinese people who love animals so hopefully things improve
