I feel that as it’s going to bring more to the drift scene, it will probably turn them away shortly after, seeing that the chassis isn’t capable of doing what they want. And will the aftermarket want to do anything with lawsuits looming in the background. I think you are spot on as for the intended use, driveways, skateparks and such. Time will tell. Keep it up Troy.

They won't say anything negative because Traxxas won't send them more free vehicles pre release. I automatically disregard any sponsored review info. That handbrake on a rwd car is the most Traxxas thing about this car. I am ashamed that I used to be a certified, kool-aid drinking, Traxxas fanboy. If not for blind brand loyalty and name recognition they'd be forced to build great cars again or go away for good. I hate what they've become.

I do certainly feel that Traxxas *could have done more/better. No doubt. BUT - I honestly don't begrudge them for the brushed setup too much. The Yokomo RTR is also brushed...and I drove that for over a year with the brushed setup. It did quite well actually. A brushed setup will frequently have better throttle control than a non-sensored brushless....so it does well. The 21T and brushed does make me think they are also attempting to limit total wheelspeed to let the TSM Drift mode do it's thing. I bet a VERY common mistake that will happen with new users is they will attempt to put a 3S/4S+ system in here...and it will be undriveable.

Honestly they should have based it off of a hybrid bandit chassis that would have at least been better for weight distribution. Traxxas has always made the least tweaks to their vehicles whenever the would release a "new car" but I also know that saves money in the long run and parts interchangeability is huge between vehicles which is nice if you have several similar vehicles. I know everyone crapped on traxxas for a going into the crawler scene at first but after the first one came out it was a nice crawler. They make great bashers for a lot of people. They do get a lot of people into the rc hobby and we all should appreciate that fact. Curious how it will handle and I'm looking forward to you getting one and testing out.

I don’t know much about RC Drift cars, but I think it’s pretty clear that the decisions here were based on business strategy… They took off the shelf parts made some minor tweaks to software etc. Produced a low cost drift car. If it sells in masses they will release a new version… Those that struggled with this version will buy the new one those that didn’t take it seriously will buy the new one either way it’s a win for Traxxas. If it does not sell, no loss for Traxxas they can discontinue and use the parts on other vehicles. They are dipping their toes into the space to see what happens…
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC Ай бұрын
That sounds logical to me! I am guessing there was still some substantial cost involved here. Yes - the chassis is a shortcut. But the new bulkheads and the TSM re-mapping must have been some work. Will be curious to try one and see how it goes.

The difference with the hand brake function to the brake is the hand brake is a instant break where when using the trigger its applied load to slow it down. basically one locks up the motor vrs slow it down.

@@RoadsideRC I have many years dealing with electronics and such. I also have their drag truck. Which works Similarly. The truck allows full throttle while holing then boom launch. The car works like that instant cut of throttle allowing the motor to lock giving you the e brake feel. When using the trigger it’s just like pushing a break peddle. It will slow the motor VRs lock it up. Thus breaking aka slowing you down. Another thing to note. 3 modes. 1 new divers. All the assist 2 learned drivers. Steering assist (means it will turn for you based on your angle power etc 3 only gyro. Means it won’t try to turn just keeps the wheels locked sideways. 2 and 3 are similar but 3 is no assist just a gyro. 2 will steering for you.

My opinion, I am NOT a drifter and had not tried it. It looks like fun but it's not really my thing. Nor am I a Traxxas fan boy. I am just getting back into RC after many years away. The Traxxas rep was at my LHS two weeks before the release of this car but he had one with him that he was letting the owner drive, he let me and a few other customers give it a rip. This thing looks really good, like something you could drive in real life. Not being a drifter, I have to say this thing was super fun! Lots of spins the first few minutes, then a few slides, then linked a few things together and it started to make sense. I was VERY close to pre ordering one, the price seemed fair, but I know nothing about the local drift scene. So I asked on the local Facebook group, nothing, not a reply. And that sealed the deal, no drift car for me. People like me are whom this car is targeted at. Sure, it's not a 360 degree steering carbon and anodized billet weapon for $200 and it's not supposed to be. I really feel like people need to temper their expectations anymore, especially in this hobby. The comments on this video are what I feel might be part of what's raising the bar of entry for RC drifting. I'm going to take the Traxxas Modified that I bought instead and go dirt oval racing, those guys are more than welcoming.

I’m not keen on this and I run a TT02 with the MRC conversion and love it! I’m guessing the spool option has been implemented into the car to try and promote forward bite but it’s going to make it slow and awkward on transitions…. I too would have liked to of seen at least a geared diff with this chassis to be honest. The biggest killer for me is the way Traxxas deal with smaller companies making conversions for their products… they then enter the drift market that is full of awesome little companies making conversions…. Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen…

If you want the real experience of 2wd rc drifting to learn how to start drifting the basics, best to get yourself an MST RMX 2.5 RTR, Yokomo YD2 RTR or a Redcat drift car considering they are good for getting into drifting a lot as a beginner. If you decide to built one from as a kit for better experience and learn how everything works for a 2wd rc drift car, get yourself a Yokomo YD2 or RD 1.0 or 2.0, 3Racing Sakura D5, Reve D RDX, etc. Most 2wd rc drift kits prices are reasonable but some are expensive because of additional parts that come handy with the kit will help a lot compare to getting an RTR version, but the real answer to all of this is mainly your choice on what you think it’s best for you.

The motor/electronics layout isn't necessarily a bad thing. The GRK follows the same layout (alongside the RWD modified TT01/02) - and my GRK (among many others) drives extremely well. The other things about it though are definitely not going to cut it.
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC Ай бұрын
Yes - I did mean to actually say that in the video...and forgot. Is the electronics layout "bad"....??? Maybe that is too extreme. Is it "ideal"? For sure not. Yes - there are cars like the GRK that use that design. But those also typically are not the ones with the highest performance either. There is some basic physics involved with the motor orientation that makes it more logical for the motor to be turned 90*.

Yes! I meant to actually say this in the video...and forgot. Clearly, there are good performing chassis that have the electronics in this location...but it is also clear that the orientation is NOT ideal. Basic physics lets you know that turning the motor 90* and moving things closer to the rear axle will help - and that is why the bulk of the chassis are designed that way.

@@RoadsideRC The GRK chassis arnt that well known outside of Japan i don’t think or much in USA(read somewhere they are slowly being introduced) but they also give you different options for battery layouts so you arnt locked into 1 battery position like their GRK WTP and GRK 4/5 layouts. The GRK chassis generally perform well or at least in Japan from what I have read with the other big hitters that are known from Japan. Perhaps depending on what Traxxas sees with this they will release a carbon option as a hop up like most of their stuff.

I'm assuming they'll have a gear diff, or maybe even a ball diff, as an aftermarket hop up. They could, theoretically, have hop ups to allow more steering angle also. If there's one thing I know about Traxxas, they love to sell you the bare bones car and offer hop ups (though, they do have Ultimate versions of some of their cars). Regarding their battery tray, they don't have shorty LiPos, and they're not going to make a vehicle that doesn't support any battery they have. All in all, I don't expect much out of this, but I am happy to see another big player enter the game. I'm sure they will end up making a 4tec drift 2.0 eventually if enough people hop on board, but it'll probably take 2 or 3 revisions to get it where it's track ready. It does seem like a good parking lot basher just to have a bit of fun, rather than using a chassis you dumped $1k into.

I think the gear diff already exists! It is in the standard 4TEC 2.0 chassis! That is why I was surprised they spent the effort to design a spool! Yes - I think the target audience of "street drifter" will have a blast.

Sounds like making the effort to convert my 4wd was more than worth it still, I'll admit I will be looking at using the arms and front bulkhead for my conversion, As for the motor being transverse it dosnt really effect it much if they gave better mounting points for the electronics it would allow for tuning out any negative effects from it there's multiple pro chassis that run a transverse motor and they run beautifully I myself had to custom make a rear high CG battery mount and move the ESC into the battery tray to balance it but that's all I've needed to change so far for electrics placement, from all the reviews and people's comments I can't help but feel they missed the mark/target in a few areas of what a drift chassis should be, I am however excited to see more companies step foot into the drift world like Traxxas and team associated even if I don't run the chassis I know others who would so overall it's cool to see 🤘 Great video as always 💜🤘

Also have to remember who their target audience is for a lot of the downsides. I don't remember if it was a comment on one of your videos, but non-rc drift specific people thought we were dumb for putting an open gear diff in the RDS even though that's the correct option for it. Same goes for the handbrake idea, while you really shouldn't be using it to initiate, "normal" people expect it. Overall, more options is never a bad thing for the hobby, especially one as niche as Drift.

Regading spools -- it is _very_ common for entry-level drift chassis to have a spool. ReveD RDX, one of the best-regarded entry-level chassis comes with a spool. MST RMX RTR has a spool, and in general there is absolutely nothing wrong with a spool in RC drift. Especially for novices who won't have the knowledge and driving experience for tuning gear differential. Furthermore, traxxas obviously aims this at more bashy side of RC drift -- parking lots, own garages, places that are not a track. And spool works well for those cases. And finally, spool is _cheaper_ -- which matters for a kit aimed at the entry-level tier. But otherwise thanks for a more level-headed review of this model.
@RoadsideRC
@RoadsideRC Ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. Yes - I 100% understand the cost implication...except in this situation, Traxxas had to spend the time and money to develop a spool....when they already had a gear diff from the regular 4TEC sitting there. I also am 100% a believer that a gear diff is easier to drive than a spool. A locked diff tends to make a car more twitchy...which would be bad for a novice. Maybe I am wrong - but that is how I see it! Thanks for the feedback.
@theAessaya
@theAessaya Ай бұрын
@@RoadsideRC that is fair. I'd say it is most likely a personal preference, and can be compensated by other tuning options. Personally, I prefer my diff close to locked -- runnign very tight ball dif, 1m cSt oil in gear diffs, and soft 4-gear C-LSD configurations in my cars. I find that spool (or very limited slip diff) behaves more consistently, as both wheels will have or lose traction at the same time, so it actually may be easier for novices to control.

My initial comment is like your point, for the same price you can get a 100 percent better car but of course aside from redcat theres nobody of the 4 rtr drifters thats more well known in the general rc community than traxxas. Every hobbyshop carries traxxas so more people will get into the scene. like my comment on facebook I think if they wanted to use an existing chassis the rustler or bandit woulda been a better choice.

Honestly the chassis layout and diff are fine. There are plenty of drift chassis thay drive great with the ssme traditional touring car layout, ie. GRK and TT02 MRC. The spool diff is totally functional as well. Spools make a car more predictable thus easier to drive, for the target market of this car its just fine. My only real issue is the front end. Its probably going to need at least different arms and steering knuckles, this chassis needs at least 25% more lock to even have a chance of running with other chassis. I wont buy kne but i am definitely curious, i look forward to driving one.

The reality is not everyone have a local drift track. When they do have a local drift track they tend to be elitists and snobs, eg. I have a Yokomo MR4TC shaft 4wd brush motor setup for drift for almost 2 decades ago now and brought it to their track and it can hang with them on the track and much faster and often I was told off that it's not about being fast yet everyone wanted to be faster around the track than the other guy with 100k rpm and make excuses about counter steer, fyi real world race drivers have different driving styles hence vehicle tuning to specific driver and track layout and conditions. I raced & drifted real cars even before most of these guys were born, raced rc since 1986 from 1/8 1/10 1/18 2wd 4wd buggy, truggy, tc (personally played tc & drift rc with Masami Hirosaka 2 decades ago). The point is, not defending traxxas, traxxas is about making money while catering to the majority, Team AE is the same, no race or track vehicles possible if they don't have sales from the regular rc enthusiasts.
