I confess my heart sank a little when I saw this video was about Lanx. Hitherto I’ve regarded them as a brand with clever marketing but without the products to match. When I first looked at them their products seemed to be cemented and Blake Stitched only. I’m glad to see they’ve graduated to Goodyear Welting and have some Stead leathers, but they still appear a bit flashy. If you want to look at the best of British shoemaking within reasonable budgets I’d suggest Crocket and Jones, Joseph Cheaney and Tricker’s. The Tricker’s Stow boot in acorn leather is probably among the best brogue country boots available. There are some cheaper brands like Barkers, Grenson and Loake, but some of their manufacturing is contracted out to India. There are also pricier options like Church’s, Edward Green, Gaziano and Girling, John Lobb, etc, but I don’t think most people’s budgets would run to them. If you do a series on British shoes I’d be particularly interested in seeing you tackle one of Grenson’s triple welt shoes. I’m baffled about what advantage they might offer.

Yeah I feel weird about Lanx, lots of social media marketing that implies they're high quality boots made in England but if you dig down they use a lot of vague terminology about the construction of their boots and very few are actually made in England. Just some transparency would be welcome!

As a Mancunian I live just down the road from Lanx Shoes. Needless to say to say I have a quite a collection from this amazing company and I have numerous pairs!!! These include 2x Pairs of Wisewell Chelsea boots, 2x Pairs of Timperley and 3x Pairs of Grindleton all from their ‘Craftsman’ range and all in different leathers and colours. I wear them every day and it has to be said, once you break those leather insoles in (which doesn’t take too long) they are simply amazing! I’m not exaggerating when I say they’re not just another pair of boots! You know you’re wearing something special, they make feel good, they look better not to mention unique and the number of comments I’ve had is unbelievable. It would be so interesting to see a pair of the Grindletons cut in half, just to see if they really are as good as they feel. I would like to think so given the trouble Lanx has gone to in their leather selections, their linings, their sole selection, their construction methods and of course the level of apparent quality craftsmanship.

British work boots developed very differently from the typical US PNW style. You should take a look at William Lennon. Especially their 78TC traditional work boot and their 268 Hill boot. Both of these are classic British work boots. The first would be exactly the sort worn by generations of miners, steel workers and industrial workers. The Hill boot is the sort worn by shepherds, hill farmers and foresters. Even more traditional would be their X10 fell boot - very unusual lace to toe with a sprung toe last which curves from heel to toe to give a "rocking" movement as you walk. Especially interesting walking up or down steep paths.

awesome vid! living in England I have been getting advertisements for Lanx quite a bit but was waiting for a video like this. In the meantime I came across the og, Tricker's Stow boot who I believe pioneered or at least popularized the brogued boot style. I 100% would love to see a "Great British Boot Off" just like the MITUSAs- also eventually an olympic style thing- mostly just to see PNW boots excel in terms of toughness, but it would be an interesting showdown. and yeah I am sure no one boot "fits all" as they say.

All the boots are named after villages in the ribble valley too, i think they’re based out of Whaley so they’ve named all their products after local places. Also fun fact about the ribble valley it’s where Tolkien lived whist his son was in school and where he wrote the lord of the rings.

Brit here, my favourite footwear is my Loake “Bedale” brogue boots. They’re great everyday wear and I shoot in them (clay venues in England are off-road but usually pretty easy going so you don’t need anything specialist for it). I also have Loake dress shoes and some Loake casual shoes but those last ones are made in India, not the UK. TBH I’m not really committed to Loake, I’d like to try other British boots when the occasion arises but most high street shoe stores stock mostly cheap Far Eastern glued-up shoes/boots and in your particular town there will probably only be one or if you are lucky two premium brands available. More online of course but footwear is one of the few things that I feel strongly about trying on before paying a substantial sum for so I won’t buy over the internet. And when I bought these, Loake were the premium brand that were in stock in my size in the town I was looking in.

I got a pair of shoes for my wife from Lanx - they looked good on the website, and also looked good on, but on closer inspection and after a little bit of wear the quality wasn't great - loose stitching, and they were slightly misshapen. Their customer services were very good and they replaced the first pair, but the replacements weren't a lot better. The refund was made with no issues. They are local to me and I genuinely wish them well, but I think I'll give the company a while to 'settle in'. The Grindleton looks good, though. Maybe they should stick to boots.

Do you own a pair of John Lobb Alders? I’ve been interested in them for a while but unsure as they are worth the big price hike over my usual Cheaney/Trickers? My Trickers Henry will take some beating - just the perfect boot in my opinion. I see you’ve listed the Cheaney Winterfold, which is a new boot for this year - if doing a boot comparison across brands, maybe the Tweed would be a better boot as it’s been a mainstay of the collection for a number of years much like the Trickers Stow, C&J Coniston etc… that are on your list?

Quality was just ok- a stitch came loose on the toe cap and started to unravel- big stuck-in foam insole made my feet hot and the red paint rubbed off - orange stitch on the outsole was just for show, not functional - fibreboard underneath the insole instead of leather - leather had pull up but didnt seem or look that good quality after a while - Made in India Ive also owned their sneakers which were fine, but the heel didnt suit my feet very well and it felt like they were going to fall off constantly. I tho k that’s correct as well. Their “warehouse” makes very small numbers. Everything else is made overseas (which they’re very quiet about) and a few things like their sneakers are made in Yorkshire and a few of their other shoes are made at other factories in Lancashire. They’re definitely making some good stuff but “Lanx” started off as some guy who did a gap year abroad and got some cheap shoes made overseas, they’ve come on a little since then but they have a long way to go before I drop nearly £400 on their boots.

Do more British brands. Grenson, loake, herring. It seems some are partially made in India but quality seems fairly top notch.

My coworker put my live wire against his leg and pushed the switch. It went around a quarter inch into his leg and he bled a lot.

Great British boot-off has to include Joseph Cheaney. Unbelievable quality. George Cleverley would be good too if you can afford it haha

William Lennon, Trickers, Crockett and Jones, Cheaneys, Edward Green ect. so many bootmakers. Now alot of these are just like Alden, they are dress or country boots which have a very different criteria than work boots. Please be fair as well.
