Unboxing a 1500$ pair of scissors.
This pair of scissors has been handcrafted in Japan by master Yasuhiro Hirakawa at Sasuke.
Usually the waiting time since comission is 1 to 2 years.
I was extremely lucky to be able to select the model and buy directly from his personal collection thanks to my wife who arranged the visit.
Also we visited the forge and his workshop.
Yasuhiro Hirakawa at Sasuke has been featured in many documentaries available in KZbin.
Photos will follow.
If interested in visiting I strongly advise to have a native interpreter in order to make the booking.

Thank you for buying from my former master Sasuke. His scissors are the last all handmade one in the world, I hope you enjoy it 🙂

Hi Eric. Great to hear from you. I really enjoy them, the are literally "one cut above" :) The only worry I have is when he dies, the craft will be lost forever... Is a bit sad...

These are gardening shears. They are more robust than bonsai shears. Your are about 6.5 inches as indicated on the box which also says it’s a registered trademark, established in the year of (Japanese years are numbered by emperor’s reign). Great piece of art, crafted with the best engineering and metallurgy. Congratulations on procuring such a fine piece fit for an heirloom.

How would one go about to order one of these scissors from the master himself? Also do I need to know Japanese?

He is based in Osaka. The address is 〒590-0004 大阪府堺市堺区北清水町3丁4−20 佐助 I would suggest to pop by and see if he is in the foundry... You can also try to phone but you need to speak Japanese,, he used to have an apprentice but he left. As you may suspect Sasuke does not needs to sell the scissors for a living and is fairly reserved to who it sells or not. My personal suggestion would be to take a bottle of sake and be extra friendly... Then if he likes you he will give you a full tour of the foundry and forge, he is literally one of the few remaining living treasures of Japan...

For that ? The last all handmade scissors maker in the world, 22th generation. In one tool you have a concentrate of japanese traditional crafts (katana polishing, old fire gun gold work, lacquer technique...) For a tool you can use more 200 years if you care about it...
