BrickCellphones Nice phone. what was that slide down panel on Philips bigger phones of the time with the buttons underneath? never got a close enough look to work it out. Cheers.

That would probably be something like the motorola select 2000 for GSM1900 or the motorola microtac 8200 CDMA (NOT motorola international 8200)....there is a rare 8200 for CDMA which obviously you can still get service on CDMA in america. Alternatively try a CDMA starTAC from 1996.

BrickCellphones Hey could you answer my question please

Depends for which technology. if it's GSM1900 then probably the motorola select 2000 or 3000. if it's CDMA then it will be the motorola 8200 for CDMA - NOT the motorola international 8200!! There is a rare version of the motorola microtac 8200 which operates on CDMA from about 1995/1996. alternatively motorola starTACS for CDMA also came out round about 95 or 96 and you can still find those on ebay with good batteries too.

Good phone! In Italy and Switzerland 2G networks situation is very sad: in Switzerland all 2G networks will be switched off in 2018, in Italy 2G works only in rural areas, I live in Milan and 2G signal is very bad, most of 2G carriers antennas are converted to 3G/4G networks only antennas, all WAP browsers had closed in august, and the landlines payphones are nearing extinction, so I'm forced to use a 3G cellphone, I have a 2004 NEC 3G flip phone, a 2011 Nokia C3, an oldschool 2010 BlackBerry, a 2012 Samsung Galaxy Pocket, who is the most resistent 3G smartphone and when I'm in rural area I can use my 2G phones: a 2004 Samung X640, a 1998 Motorola StarTAC 130 and my 2003 Nokia 3310.

Yes australia switched off one of it's 2G GSM 900 networks....it's unfortunate but 2G is old technology from 1991 when GSM launched. it's no longer financially viable for mobile network operators to keep 2G equipment running. they replace it with more efficient 3G or 4G equipment which uses less electricity, has more capacity and is easier to maintain because there is spare parts available....unlike 2G GSM equipment which was installed in 1991 - 1995. in the UK most public phone boxes are being repurposed as pay wifi hotspots. if you have problem with 2g where you live maybe get a motorola 3200 international or a motorola 1000 international. they are very powerful phones. I use both especially the 1000 if I am going to far away places like the desert sahara.

From two years, when 2G problems started, I thinked to buy a Motorola 3200 international, it's actually a good cellphone and it have a better reception than StarTac 130. I agree whit you, 2G is a very old technology, and it probably will go out from the market in a few years. 2G networks closing process is like that of the ETACS, when an antenna have a problem, it's repleced whit a 3G/4G BTS and when they're all converted the old network sistem can be closed. I miss many great technologies that now aren't usable, fore example the ETACS who was switched off in 2006 in my area, I rember the TeleTAC and the TeleDRIN buyed from SIP. But in telecomunications, when a technology is old, there isn't nothing to do, especially if it depends from someone operetor or broadcaster.

Oh of course the 3200 has much better reception....it has a antenna bigger than the startac itself. ETACS was switched off in 2001 in the UK....2006 is very late. you're lucky. the reason they replace old technology with new is probably because they can't get spare parts to repair the old 2g system....no one is manufacturing spare parts for old 2G GSM systems any more because no new 2G GSM900 systems are being installed or built from scratch.

If you would to continue to use an oldschool mobile phone, who for me are the best, you can try with old satellite phone, the satellite digital phone standard dosen't change, this satellite phones probably works forever, but their costs are very high.

I do have satelite phones in my collection however alot of countries banned satelite phones so I don't really want to do a video about a phone that many people can't have or relate to. But yes satelite calls are very expensive. if you want to keep using an old school phone then just build yourself a briefcase phone maybe?
