I am extremely grateful. Education was my ticket out of poverty, and I owe that to the opportunities available to me here in the United States. We live in the greatest country in the world, and I am living proof that EDUCATION is the key to financial security. Being first generation Vietnamese-American, I grew up extremely poor. My parents escaped Vietnam to the Philippines with nothing. Through the kindness of Americans, my parents were eventually sponsored here to the United States, where I was born. I didn't have many good memories growing up. No birthdays, no Christmas. I struggle, mentally, with many of my childhood memories. I recall being a latch-key kid at the age of 4. My parents were gone for days out on the Gulf of Mexico as deck hands on a shrimping boat. There were very, very few opportunities afforded to immigrants back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and young families had to endure a lot to survive. I have vivid memories of me growing up in Mississippi--my parents and 4 other siblings, crammed in this tiny 500sqft government-assisted housing, and the only reason I went to school was to eat the free meals, as it was our only source of food. My brothers, sisters and I went to bed hungry every night. Every day, the school kids would make fun of me because I was the poor kid that wore the same clothes everyday for the entire school year. I remember crying myself to sleep a lot as a child, asking God what did I do that I deserved such a hard life. My parents didn't understand the system well enough to realize there was help available. Thankfully, one of my 2nd Grade teachers saw something in me and had me tested, academically. After that moment, I was bused from a predominantly black Elementary School to a neighboring town located forty minutes away that offered a Gifted Program at its Elementary School. That moment in my life--I realized poverty was not going to define me. Education was my only way out, and I thank God everyday for giving me that opportunity. Thank you, Brother, for your continued support, and I look forward to seeing your next Short!!!

@@Styxx2018 That is powerful brother but it’s definitely your hard work that got you were you are you deserve credit for that! I’m a prime example of being given every opportunity and squandering everything In my younger years. I lost everything about 4 years ago due to my own ignorance but I’m back on track nowadays and the future is looking bright. God has a plan for all of us and sometimes he has to challenge us with hard times to make us the men we’re supposed to be! Your story make me like you all the more bud Im happy life is good for you brother sometimes this country and it’s people can be cruel but sometimes it can be the most beautiful thing imaginable but at the end of the day it’s the greatest country on earth.
