The "Woobie" slang for the poncho liner is from the 1983 Michael Keaton movie Mr. Mom. A security blanket is a minor plot point.

Ian must live in one of those massive Army surplus shop seen in 80s films. The size of a UK out of town shopping centre places.

Choc chip cam was designed with American deserts in mind, which are mostly red sandstone, which is why it didn't work in middle eastern deserts.

The black soles mean those are SUPER early desert boots indeed.

They came as desert tan and turned black with use/ sunlight.

@@gregsmall5939 LOL, no. Not like that. Those are *literally* jungle boot soles used for putting together the very first desert boots, becayse when they went to the sand colored soles, they had to fiddle around with the correct polymer to get soles with the correct physical wear and environmental characteristics- that took a while. The black soles the US Army had been using on jungle boots since the latter part of the Vietnam War were already validated, even if it was though stark black was not an ideal shade. Black is an easy color to do polymers and synthetic rubbers in, because we've been doing it for over a century. Tan and green can be rather problematic, because many of the chemical additives to get those colors have adverse effects on the physical characteristics. But because of literally over 100 years of ongoing research into making tires black, black we've pretty much got solved. I *have* tan sole jungle boots from shortly after the Gulf War, that I still wear occaisionally. The soles are "dingy" from having dirt (and soot, from walking through burned up locations), but they arennot uniformly black, by any means. A buddy of mine who still had his desert boots *from the Gulf War* and still wore them for yard work into the early 2000s (much I as I still use a set of black jungle boots I bought at Clothing Sales *before* the Gulf War), and the soles were the same - dingy but not "black". Even though he'd worn that exact pair of boots on a Sinai MPF tour and in Somalia. (By the end of Somalia, he finally replaced them for duty, because the tread was worn down so much.)

@@geodkytI didn't notice it until I read your comment, but in the Wikipedia article on the DBDU's the picture of an early prototype from 1976 has those black soled desert boots in it (to the right of the soldier). To the left they had tan soled ones too, but I guess it took them awhile to refine the formula.

Hmm. I wonder if the GPS has the Military only code in it to unlock the precision mode. Civvie mode was + - 100m accuracy back in the early 90s, if I remember rightly. Military was + - 2m I think.
