Superb work with outstanding reman parts. Good eye on spotting the fuel leak. If you hadn't you may have discovered the short cut to perfectly tuned SU's. Set the whole rig on fire! I had a'72 XJ6 in which I had done a head rebuild and carb swap from the factory Strombergs to twin 2" SU's. I had dearly wanted triplets but couldn't find any. The morning after finishing the project, I departed on a roadtrip from Toronto to Boston. The carb setup proved very troublesome for the entire trip untill on the way home at a stop in Connecticut, the cold start automatic enrichment device malfunctioned spilling raw fuel everywhere which promptly ignited. A number of tense moments went by while the conflagration was subdued with a borrowed fire extinguisher. I was forced to do a complete dismantle and rebuild at the roadside with a fair amount of improvisation to replace melted parts as there were no repair or parts sources available on a Saturday afternoon in Connecticut for an old British car. Once back on the road, I found that it ran better than it had ever run before and continued to do so for years after. Minus the enrichment device.

I had a 1969 MGB Roadster with wire wheels that had the dual 38mm sidedraft SU carbs and it was interesting to work on them and tune them. Experimenting with mixture needles of different taper, to get the F/A ratio exactly right, was an interesting task. I would also fill in jet orifices with solder and then drill them out with tiny hand-turned drill bits for exact mixture control. I used to use a UniSyn meter for synchronizing carbs on my bikes and the MGB and Austin Healy that I owned. On my bike that had an individual carb for each cylinder, I would rough set the balance with either a UniSyn or measure intake port vacuum on each cylinder. I would then fine tune the carbs by doing a power balance test, where I would short individual cylinders an adjust the throttle butterflies for equal RPM drop from each cylinder.

@jrichker5 жыл бұрын
Synchronizing SU type carburetors - It isn’t hard to do at all, and the homemade tools are very inexpensive and easy to make. You need 3 each 6” x1/4” wood dowels; in a pinch 3 good wood pencils will do nicely. Clean the dowels (or pencils) up so that both ends are flat and there are no splinters or bits of wood that can fall off and cause problems. The hardest part of the job is to suck out any oil from the dampener pistons so that the dowels don't float in the oil. Remove the dampeners from the carburetors and insert the wood dowels, pressing down on them until they bottom out. Take a knife and score the wood dowels using the top of the piston housing where the dampers screw in as a resting point for the side of the knife. Twist the dowels while holding the knife edge against them to make a small groove all the way around the dowels. That groove is our zero mark and starting point for our engine running test. Next, start the engine and note the distance of the marks above the top of the piston housing. Adjust the idle speed stop screw on each carburetor so that all 3 marks are at the same level above the top of the piston housing where the dampeners screw in and at the desired idle speed. A 6” General Tool stainless steel ruler works well for those who need a visual aid in getting all 3 marks to the same distance above the piston housing where the dampeners screw in. As you push down the accelerator, you will notice that once properly adjusted, the marks on the 3 dowels maintain the same distance above the piston housing where the dampeners screw in.

Neat process I assume this in lieu of a Uni-Syn Carburetor Synchronizer?
@jrichker5 жыл бұрын
YES. It works on any number of SU carburetors until you run out of wooden pencils to sacrifice... :LOL It allows you to see what all the carburetors are doing in real time. No need to move the Uni-Syn and then find that after adjusting one carburetor that the other carburetors need adjusting.

Only slightly more effort than tuning twin SU's really. One of those things you have to wrap your head around the first time, and really study the instructions. Once you understand how these simple carbs work it becomes pretty easy. There again I've got over 30 years in motorcycle work and am quite used to multiple carb setups.
@ldnwholesale85525 жыл бұрын
Actually quite simple. To set proper mixtures can really only be done on a dyno. But the rest is quite simple provided you have a good linkage set up. The 2" though are quite a bit different to the 1 3/4 Austin 1800 mk1 carbs that many use in triple carb set ups for many 6 cyl engines. That original aircleaner box though is bad news for power, almost a choke. And tuning must be done with that air restriction on. I use a filter about that size for each carb straight on the carb. The main reason is to go over the ramtubes which give a little more power and better mid range grunt [torque]

Seeing as how you Hearted my comment, I will share a secret technique with you and all your followers. How to avoid cross threading a screw, nut or bolt, and how to retain structural integrity in plastic when re-installing screws. Always, lightly back the screw, nut or bolt in the reverse direction of the thread. As you slowly turn the screw, nut or bolt backwards, as the threads of the two pieces come together, the screw, nut or bolt, will drop into the other piece, usually you will also hear a click. It is at this point that you have mated the two pieces so thta when you apply rotation in the proper direction, you will not cross thread the screw, nut or bolt. For everyone that has to remove screws from plastic objects repair what is inside the enclosure and then re-insert the screw, and maintain the strength of the original fitment, this technique should always be done. If you simply start turning the screws back into the plastic, you will cut new threads and reduce the structural integrity of your product by as much as 50%. Further, you will not get a third kick at the can, as the thread in the plastic almost always strips on the third attempt. Happy screwing people! ;-)

lol I remember people saying use brake fluid instead of oil for the dashpots on an su carb as it doesn't rot the diaphragm and also made them more responsive as its thinner,,,,,hmmm?
@martingoode28815 жыл бұрын
I think you are confusing SU carbs with Stromberg, the diaphragm on a SU is only in contact with the fuel, the Stromberg has a different set up, although I will agree that using brake fluid in the dashpot might make them responsive but the correct oil is there for a reason, to enrich the mixture on acceleration.
