This eMachines eTower 333c computer has been sitting brand new UNOPENED at RE-PC. Today, I open it for the first time and try to play some games on it. The results are... mixed to say the least! Thanks to RE-PC for letting me borrow it.

The BIOS Checksum Error means that the CR2032 Battery is depleted, just replace it with a new one, it's just a regular CR2032 Lithium Battery (not Lithium-ION, not rechargeable)

On December 31st, 2000, Amazon stock had crashed down to 78 cents. $400 of stock at this price would be about $70,000 today. That could buy a pretty sweet gaming PC! And a brand new car too!

You are correct, the CMOS cheksum error is the CR2032 battery on the motherboard. You can probably pop it out with a pencil or pen and it'll clear that error. Very simple fix for about 1-3 bucks.

In high school, I worked in a call center doing tech support in 1997-1999 and I remember when they first hit the market and we immediately absolutely hated eMachines. Their QC was so bad back then and we had to tell so many people to return them. This brings back so many memories 😆

Got a similar eMachines PC in a matte box still sealed since I bought it in 2001 from Circuit City (now defunct). I bought it as a cheap backup for my business but never needed it so yeah it's still just sitting in its original box. heh

Average amazon stock price in 2000 was $2.32 per share. For 400 you could but 174 shares. Multiply by the price now, you'd have $23,650

To answer the question Amazon stock, Amazon shares in January of 2000 was going for about $3.44 a share, which for $400 you could buy 116 shares. Today Amazon is trading about $139 a share so you would have turned $400 into $16,124 which is a pretty decent return.
@JaredConnell

But Amazon stock split 20:1 last year, so multiply that number by 20 and you'd have $322,480!

If you had sold in Jul 6 2020, before the split, when amazon was $3000 a share. You would have made 348,000

Unreal should work too, if he had gone into the advanced settings and picked a different renderer than the default software one. The Rage 3D isn't a great card but it's about as good as a Voodoo 1, and probably sufficient for games that will run ok with the rest of that computer.

The Cyrix chips were very weak at floating point(which presumably means relatively terrible software 3D rendering), but were very good for general Windows usage. I had an MII 233, mostly for business, and it was excellent for that. I'm pretty sure it was this PC that I added a 3DFX Voodoo(not Voodoo 2) to, from memory that combination worked well for games.

MJR, this video was a throwback - brought back a ton of memories. That said this machine could have been lower to midrange even by 1998 standards. If you're willing to tinker around, I would start by replacing the battery on the mainboard, tweaking the BIOS slightly then find a Voodoo 2 card, which will help tremendously in the gaming department.

I used to work for Sykes Enterprises in a call center that did tech support for eMachines. One weekend, our server went down for the whole center, and we couldn't get anything from corporate until Monday. Our IT crew took one of the demo eMachines from the floor, stuffed it with all the RAM they could fit into it, added the HD from the server, and it kept us running for the next two days. Amazing!

From what I remember, eMachines used refurbished hardware which is why they were able to sell the desktops so cheaply. As a consequence though, they had a high failure rate.
@lrooff

I used to do tech support for eMachines. The only refubished stuff was when a computer came back for repair or replacement, in which case they were refurbished. The money-saving for the company came from using low-end power supplies and software modems, both of which failed too often.

Lovely to see old tech from ones own youth, I remember when we got our first computer sometime in late '97 or early '98 as I remember The Curse of monkey Island had recently been released and I was playing the heck out of that game, we were also fortunate to be subscribed to a PC Magazine that had the full release of Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars as a free bonus in one of their issues, usually you would only get shareware, sadly it meant we only got the discs and not even a CD-case for it as a drawback.

Nice video. Brings back a few memories. Not that I ever owned one of these machines but I was "the guy" to bring your computer to if it had problems. They must have bought the cheapest of the cheap components for those machines because I distinctly remember swollen or burst caps on three of them that were only a couple of years old. Granted, bad caps were a thing back then but still you should reasonably be able to expect more longevity out of even a cheap computer.

I bought the same exact computer in 1999,but the Celeron version. The Rage II was soldered to the motherboard and ran on the AGP bus. There was no actual AGP slot available, but there were two free PCI slots and an ISA slot. It performed great for non-gaming tasks, but was a little sluggish for many games. I bought my first nVidia card, a Creative Labs branded PCI RIVA TNT, for it and it could handle everything I threw at it for a couple of years. The only thing that ever gave me problems was noisy power supply fan. It wasn't a great computer, but it was an absolutely OK one, especially for the price.

This was my first computer back in 1999 or so. Good pc for the time and a bit of a learning experience. My mom bought it from Sears that summer and it worked good when it did. Ended up breaking twice and they replaced the PC each time. On the second time Sears or eMachines did a recall on them so we bought a better Compaq from the era. Looking back on it it was most likely the power supply having issues. Definitely a blast from the past.
