The Dreamcast remains to this day my favourite console of all time. It was such an anticipated day for me and my two brothers growing up. We were Arcade boys growing up, so our entire early teens were spent at the Arcades, growing up with Segas classic AM2 games like Virtua Cop, Striker, Virtual On, Virtua Fighter, Sega Rally, Daytona etc... so instinctevely we got the Saturn over the PS1, with no regrets to this day. Unfortunately, the Saturn bit the dust pretty early in it's life cycle, so we were left to 'dream' about the next Sega console. I remember the Dreamcast being showcased in so many kiosks throughout my local towns, and suffice to say me andmy brothers were in awe of games like Sega Rally 2, Ready 2 Rumble, and most notable Power Stone, as we were multiplayer gamers at our roots. I remember coming home from school one day, and hearing 'Welcome to Power Stone War' upstairs in our bedroom. I immediately ran upstairs, and saw my brother playing Powerstone, my other brother watching him, and 2 of my brothers friends crowded arund. I had no idea where this Dreamcast came from. I certainly didn't have the money to buy it, nor did my brothers. We usually got consoles around Christmas from our mum. It turned out, my mum went up on release day to buy one. God Bless her! Here's some icing on the cake to this story. I remember her coming upstairs, and popping her head into our room, and asks 'So, suprised?' I was like 'Hell yeah!' gave her the biggest hug. Then, being a mother who noticed everything, she looked at my brother, and asks 'Why aren't you playing together?' My brother replied 'There's only one controller, mum' My mums heart sank, as she thought there were two controllers in the box. We were quick to assure her not to worry and will get a second controller soon. We were just happy to have the console. My mum left the room, and we didn't hear from her for a good few hours. We were still playing when she returned. She popped her head in, dropped a bag on the floor, and said 'Happy Gaming'. It was a second controller. She left the room earlier and went into Town, which was about 30 mins away, to get us a second controller. What a mother. What a console. Suffice to say, me and my brothers still play the DC every day we are together. It has never been stored away. It is still that good of a console.

I remember talk a bunch of crap about it with my friends at school and mostly spreading the news about it, because I was one of the few who knew English at the time to go to the forums and ask/read about build paths for mags (thanks for teaching me English dad). I also remember playing Crazy Taxi with my cousins too competing for whoever got the most money, Sonic Adventure 2 races and we always fought over who's gonna be Shadow, Power Stone 2 (the samurai guy was the man btw), Soul Calibur, Ready 2 Rumble (2 I think, it was real fun that one I got to play with my dad). This is my favorite console, because I never got to try a GameCube, or a Ps2 on their prime, and right after it died on me (I hate ants) my uncle got me an Xbox, but it wasn't the same (I mean jsrf is an all time favorite but by this time everyone grew up and I was pretty much the only one besides my older cousin to still play games, so yeah, it wasn't as much fun as the dreamcast era, in my case at least). If only Sega didn't play upgrade games and make a true Genesis 2 32 bit console and the Dreamcast after that they may still be a contender in the console wars
@G360LIVE3 жыл бұрын
Upgrades began with the Sega CD (as Nintendo proved, a CD drive at the time wasn't needed), but Sega Japan really screwed up and thought the Atari Jaguar would be competition for them. That's why they pushed ahead and made the 32X. If only Sega didn't panic and just played their own game, released their own consoles in their own time. I think panic concerning the PlayStation is also why Sega pushed the Saturn out early, a surprise launch earning them a bad reputation among both retailers and fans.

@@michaelanderson9792 The new Dreamcast games are exclusive to Japan, where Dreamcast is still a prominent console due to SEGA still being active there; as in, the system is still being manufactured anew. Good deal! Well do I remember getting mine. I had preordered it back around July or August of 1999 from the Electronics Boutique in Downtown Columbus OH, and 9-9-99 fell on a Thursday, the day before I got paid. So I went into work on the 10th before I had to be there, picked up my check and went down to get my preorder. Didn't have enough to buy any games yet, so I went back to work, stashed it in security and worked my shift. That evening I hooked it up to the front room TV; two of my sisters (one lived next door with her family) and I recall one of my nieces, who was 11 at the time were there, then fired up the demo disc. I have to admit that everyone's jaw dropped to the floor while I was playing Sonic Adventure. It just looked so incredible after playing PS1 and Saturn for a couple of years. I still have my original DC, though the drive no longer works. Since I do have two other functioning DCs (including a black Sega Sports variant). I'm planning to install a device in it to replace the drive with an SD card, and also replace the battery with a rechargeable socket. As a way to keep the dream alive, so to speak :) Yeah, that's definitely a later box. My launch DC box I recall was mainly white with orange highlights. I kept the box but sadly, lost it in a move back in 2002. Since I was already building my own computers by that time, the only time I had my DC online was to either download some doodad from Sega (like that Hallowe'en patch for Sonic Adventure) or a site that archived both patches and saves to download. Pretty sure you don't need to do that these days, since there's a disc you can burn that has all the patches and VMU games but hey, advancement!

That darn disc drive… the achilles heel of this console. It’s what killed my Dreamcast almost two years to the day after I got it for Christmas back in the day. I’ve had a couple since thanks to eBay and my current model I just swapped it for an SD reader and I love being able to have it with me still. So many great memories on this console…

Best Buy was liquidating the Dreeamcast for $40 for that exact set. Bought 10 - gave a couple away, converted my personal unit (bought at launch) with GDEmu, Pico Power supply, HDMI mod, etc - STILL one of the best consoles ever released (along with Saturn and GameCube)

This takes me back to 9/9/1999 when I unboxed my brand new Dreamcast on launch day. Memories.

Dude, the Dreamcast is my favorite console! I agree with you. I was an adult and just married and my wife suggested I get a new console. We went to Toys R Us and remember looking at the DC video stand next to the PS2 and thinking the DC graphics blew Sony out of the water. I ended up buying the DC Black Sports Edition version. I can fire it up right now and it plays great. I just need to replace the battery.

I loved playing that demo disc. It's what made me a Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain fan. I always looked forward to getting Dreamcast magazines with demo discs. Good old days. And Sonic Adventure was great. The Sega Dreamcast was my first 3D console.

Instantly liked the video before it even started. The dreamcast is one of my all time favorite consoles. I remember when I played NBA 2K and NFL 2K I was blown away by the graphics. The sonic level had me hypnotize in toysrus as a kid watching that whale chase sonic was epic.

I remember my brother and I getting our Dreamcast on release day 9-9-99 at Sam’s Club and getting NBA 2K. I was blown away that the players were blinking.

Also yes, you can play Phantasy Star Online on the DC. You need either a dial up connection (and a phone line, duh), the Broadband Adapter or a dreampi.

The fact that it even came with a web browser is amazing. I dont remember n64 or any playstation doing that up until playstation 3, also for 1999 the graphics were amazing, i played mysteries of the sith alot in the 90s on my old time pc and the graphics wernt as good as this

Zombie Revenge is imo the most underrated game for the Dreamcast. Some of the best couch co-op I've ever had. I wish they made more creative arcade best em ups like that.

It’s Sad how the only thing that stoped this console from being truly successful, was not adding a DVD player like the PS2 & original Xbox had.

😶then it would've been or possibly been one of the best selling consoles of all time
@richardg53013 жыл бұрын
If they had, they probably would have had so many more PC game ports that ultimately got cancelled. Would have given it a bigger library and something other consoles just didn't have. Really wish we could have played Baldur's Gate/Age of Empires 2/Black and White on it.

God I miss the Bit Wars. Bought the DC when the price dropped to 100usd and got the KB, mouse and broadband adapter, never used them tho. Those VMUs ate batteries left and right. The DC and PS2 were the last consoles I owed and play once I got my PC, now I just emulate them.
