Unboxing and first look at Tecsun R-909 FM/MW/SW radio with DX switch

I bought the same radio in 1999 under the brand name of KCHIBO and it was good on FM but on SW it was Chinesevpropaganda receiver like Tecsun R901. I I was huge fan of Radio Australia which used to be broadcast from Melbourne and they plated great nusic , live & true news , grear tapk shows and documentaries and as a kid and a teenager it helped improove my English speaking skills . Had a Philips Skipper radio at home and it was a great radio so bought the KCHIBO for my touring but the lousy thing was Chibese afterall.

The Chinese radio signals are so strong, I think it is inevitable that most radios will keep picking them up :-) But I will see what this one can do, I am sure with such a nice long antenna it will pick up many signals. I am a bit lucky in my location, I do seem to manage to pick up many different signals, and very distant signals, often. My biggest expectation of this radio is for MW, so I am excited to try that out.

Wow. I never knew Wish delivered to South Africa. Amazon is trying to construct a warehouse in Cape Town, and also the antenna on the R909 is huge. The colour is quite nice also. Having a DX switch is lovely. It is like a perfect radio for travel to wherever you go.

I really like the green colour on this one! Looks like it was made for taking on safari! About Wish, I knew they delivered to South Africa, just never tried them before. But it was quite a nice experience, as I said in the video, it took a month. But the SA side was actually really fast, it arrived in Durban earlier this week (a bit strange that it went to Durban, maybe it arrived by ship), and from there it was shipped with the Post Office's Speed Services, so it arrived at my local post office on Thursday. Wish also guarantees delivery, when you order they provide a "final" delivery estimate (in my case it was August!), and if it does not arrive by then, you get your money back. So, I will use them again. Just be careful, the sellers are third-party sellers and some of them really inflate their prices, you need to browse around until you find the best price.

@@swlistening It indeed does fit travel through the bush. Heck, maybe someone can use it in the veld. Even in a safari, like you said. It just fits every part of travel within South Africa.

I saw in an article in SWLing that was dated 2011. Still available new so that is a clear sign it's a good one. R-909, R-911, R-2012, all three were at the top of my list for portables 5 or 6 years ago. I think you'll really enjoy this. Local setting just seems to attenuate too much.

Wow, so it has been around for a bit more than a decade now! I am looking forward to testing this one more. The date on the manual of mine is 2021, so they are still printing new manuals as they produce more of this radio. Suppose it does mean that it is a popular radio that does what it is supposed to do.

@@swlistening You were right on when you said 2010...2011. Still can be bought new today. I think the 911 and 9012 can be bought new as well. That is a trip the manual is 2021! I think you're really going to like this one. There is something just fun about a little portable. Plus it's great content and not hard on the wallet. Keep up the great work! I watch every video!

I agree with you about this little radio, just a fun radio that is so simple to use and it seems to work really well! It is quite interesting that they updated the manual in 2021! I haven't seen the R911 for sale recently, but the R9012 is definitely still available new, quite widely.

Still a really fantastic radio after all these years. And it seem to come in a few color variations too., Even a translucent Blue case, that reminds me of a lot of 90s Tech with transparent cases :D Really lovely Radio that i still feel like buying too because of the nostalgia and good built quality. I really love the dark frequency dial too. The only thing i'm not really a fan of is the combined on-off volume switch-dial but hey, that's just personal preference.

I agree with you, I love this little radio and I love my safari green colour! It has a real old-fashioned look, still full analogue, feels well-built, and just works!

That seems like a good one. And yes CRI is very powerful and is on several frequencies. They have some interesting programs though.

I actually really like that green! Pity I can’t find any reliable way to specify the color when ordering-most EBay listings show multiple colors in the same listing but no way to choose.

I think I was lucky to get this colour! I really like it also, looks like something I can take with me into the African bush when I go to one of our national parks. It just looks like a safari radio 😀

Not a bad little radio I'd say. I still have a strong preference for the Sony icf-sw11 which is very good on all the mw/SW bands, and it's doing well in the FM band (and it's stereo via the headphones jack). Also, it seems like the batteries last forever on this thing. But the price / quality ratio of these Tecsun is certainly very good !

I was actually looking at the Sony ICF-SW11 last night on Amazon! But it is quite expensive, I see on Amazon the price is $133, that is very steep, more than six time the price of the Tecsun R-909. The Sony look like a really nice radio though, I think it is in a class of its own.

Tuning dial (is that the right word?) looks very readable in your video.

I always ask myself the same question, I often refer to both the screen and the dial as the tuning dial. I suppose the tuning display area is a screen, and the dial that you turn is the dial. I also think the screen looks really nice, very striking black colour, and very clear.

Saya perlu sedikit lebih banyak waktu untuk menguji R-909, tetapi dari tes awal saya yang sangat cepat, saya benar-benar berpikir R-909 mungkin sedikit lebih baik daripada R9012. Not the best radio ever, but the sound quality is good. Only it's noisy on weak reception..

Thanks for your comment! I like the R-909, but it is definitely not one of my favourites. It can be a bit noisy, and it is very hard sometimes to tune into weak signals.

XHDATA D-219 mempunyai liputan gelombang pendek yang lebih luas dan saya fikir ia mungkin lebih sensitif sedikit. Saya baru mendapat R-909 saya jadi saya masih mengujinya. Setakat ini saya sangat kagum, nampaknya ia adalah radio yang sangat bagus! Jadi saya fikir salah satu daripada dua ini akan menjadi pilihan yang baik!

Yes, it is quite sensitive on FM, picks up all my local stations.

@@akashbhagat123 Rechargeable batteries work, yes. I tried it with some 1.2V Energizer batteries and it works fine. But I don't think the batteries will charge inside the radio. Just a guess, considering the price of this radio, I think that functionality is not available. I don't have a power cable to check this.

The R-9012 is WAY BETTER. I have no clue where those better results come from. I have both and I can compare them at the exact same time: More sensitive on MW than R-9012??? Nope! A disaster. Really!! I own a R-9012 for over five years now. Bought the R-909 based on those "positive" reviews :-( So I can compare those radios at the same time!! Better on FM than the R-9012? Nope. Same results and same overload on strong signals. Shortwave perhaps?? With the same antenna, time and band... Not at all. Better audio?? Must have been a tone deaf person, because the audio sound almost the same if not exactly the same. Perhaps I got a lemon, granted, but I can only report about the radio I bought.

It might be that my R-9012 is a lemon, because it did not come close to the R-909 in my test.
