nice, these were also used in ancient greece as well, but they were 2 pipes separate and the two pipes were a bit different but played together.

The Qiang Di (羌笛, Qiang flute) of the Qiang nationality of Sichuan in China is very similar to Mijiwiz and Zummara. They all have double pipes and single reeds. That's so interesting that these three instruments are similar to each other though belong to different countries!! I wonder whether these three instruments have common ancestors in ancient times. 😃

This a Palestinian famous music tool called yarghool or Mijwiz.. however it spreads and used in Levant area... there is plenty of videos on KZbin.. the sound very close to heart and remind me always to return back my homeland .. enjoy listening 😀

Mijwiz is Lebanese Yarghoul is Palestinian the Yarghoul sounds a bit different to the mijwiz and functions differently and the Mijwiz is shorter with both pipes at equal lengths whereas the Yarghoul has one long pipe with a very long pipe next to it

Mijwiz is a Lebanese traditional instrument and the Palestinian version is called the yarghoul

It's actually 2 different instruments. The Yarghoul has 1 chanter and 1 drone pipe, while this Mijwiz has 2 chanters. The Yarghoul originally comes from ancient Egypt. In the island of Sardinia there is one similar to Yarghoul, called Launeddas, but has 3 pipes, 2 are chanters, and 1 is a drone. In Sardinia we also have "Benas" which is like Mijwiz, with 2 pipes only.

Mid East music in USA has them. Also Lark in the morning company in USA. Mijwiz means double or twin. Traditionally uses circular breathing.

The word I could read on the tape around the reeds was FA, I presume that is the pitch of the mijwiz. In Sumer we found them made of silver. That is a very well made one.

I have a question. I have an aluminum mijwiz that I purchased online on ebay. However, I do not have reeds to go with it. I have begun to make my own from bamboo, but it is proving extremely challenging to create any two reeds that act on the same general pitch, volume, or general intensity. I also have been unable to find out if the newer, metal mijwiz have synthetic reeds instead, as I would guess may be true. Please let me know if you know of any good dual reeds, and can answer any of these questions. Just so you know, the approximate diameter of the hole in which each respective reed needs to be able to fit is 5-6 mm or so. Thanks.

You do not use bamboo. It is much too stiff. You can use a tube of river cane, Arundo donax. You could try another cane, Phragmites australis. I have made my own zurna reeds from that.

وَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مُّؤْمِنٌ مِّنْ آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ يَكْتُمُ إِيمَانَهُ أَتَقْتُلُونَ رَجُلاً أَن يَقُولَ رَبِّيَ اللَّهُ وَقَدْ جَاءكُم بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ مِن رَّبِّكُمْ وَإِن يَكُ كَاذِباً فَعَلَيْهِ كَذِبُهُ وَإِن يَكُ صَادِقاً يُصِبْكُم بَعْضُ الَّذِي يَعِدُكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي مَنْ هُوَ مُسْرِفٌ كَذَّابٌ A believer, a man from among the people of Pharaoh, who had concealed his faith, said: "Will ye slay a man because he says, 'My Lord is Allah'?- when he has indeed come to you with Clear (Signs) from your Lord? and if he be a liar, on him is (the sin of) his lie: but, if he is telling the Truth, then will fall on you something of the (calamity) of which he warns you: Truly Allah guides not one who transgresses and lies! يَا قَوْمِ لَكُمُ الْمُلْكُ الْيَوْمَ ظَاهِرِينَ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَمَن يَنصُرُنَا مِن بَأْسِ اللَّهِ إِنْ جَاءنَا قَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ مَا أُرِيكُمْ إِلَّا مَا أَرَى وَمَا أَهْدِيكُمْ إِلَّا سَبِيلَ الرَّشَادِ "O my People! Yours is the dominion this day: Ye have the upper hand in the land: but who will help us from the Punishment of Allah, should it befall us?" Pharaoh said: "I but point out to you that which I see (myself); Nor do I guide you but to the Path of Right!" وَقَالَ الَّذِي آمَنَ يَا قَوْمِ إِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُم مِّثْلَ يَوْمِ الْأَحْزَابِ Then said the man who believed: "O my people! Truly I do fear for you something like the Day (of disaster) of the Confederates (in sin)!- مِثْلَ دَأْبِ قَوْمِ نُوحٍ وَعَادٍ وَثَمُودَ وَالَّذِينَ مِن بَعْدِهِمْ وَمَا اللَّهُ يُرِيدُ ظُلْماً لِّلْعِبَادِ "Something like the fate of the People of Noah, the 'Ad, and the Thamud, and those who came after them: but Allah never wishes injustice to his Servants. وَيَا قَوْمِ إِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَوْمَ التَّنَادِ "And O my people! I fear for you a Day when there will be Mutual calling (and wailing),- يَوْمَ تُوَلُّونَ مُدْبِرِينَ مَا لَكُم مِّنَ اللَّهِ مِنْ عَاصِمٍ وَمَن يُضْلِلِ اللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُ مِنْ هَادٍ "A Day when ye shall turn your backs and flee: No defender shall ye have from Allah: Any whom Allah leaves to stray, there is none to guide... وَلَقَدْ جَاءكُمْ يُوسُفُ مِن قَبْلُ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ فَمَا زِلْتُمْ فِي شَكٍّ مِّمَّا جَاءكُم بِهِ حَتَّى إِذَا هَلَكَ قُلْتُمْ لَن يَبْعَثَ اللَّهُ مِن بَعْدِهِ رَسُولاً كَذَلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللَّهُ مَنْ هُوَ مُسْرِفٌ مُّرْتَابٌ "And to you there came Joseph in times gone by, with Clear Signs, but ye ceased not to doubt of the (Mission) for which he had come: At length, when he died, ye said: 'No messenger will Allah send after him.' thus doth Allah leave to stray such as transgress and live in doubt,- الَّذِينَ يُجَادِلُونَ فِي آيَاتِ اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ سُلْطَانٍ أَتَاهُمْ كَبُرَ مَقْتاً عِندَ اللَّهِ وَعِندَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كَذَلِكَ يَطْبَعُ اللَّهُ عَلَى كُلِّ قَلْبِ مُتَكَبِّرٍ جَبَّارٍ "(Such) as dispute about the Signs of Allah, without any authority that hath reached them, grievous and odious (is such conduct) in the sight of Allah and of the Believers. Thus doth Allah, seal up every heart - of arrogant and obstinate Transgressors."
