At least you KNOW you are in a game here. It's always going to be a subjective grade decision you are paying for and not a definitive, exact science, factual grade though.

i recently got back a submission of some 80s ASM with an 8.0 prescreen. big shock, the lowest graded books in the submission were 8.0 with no rejects. seems fishy to me

Wondering if newer graders /most graders simply aren't allowed to give 9.9s yet. It still seems to be the luck of the draw to get the right grader on the right day with the right book that has the green light for 9.9s. Scottie Young is.a popular cover artist and CGC works hand-in-hand with him for signing events, maybe thats why they are keeping a tighter rein on his 9.9s, especially with a Wolverine related book which is the IP that is peaking right now. I feel like your psychological post-it note did serve a purpose though- it helped shift the Overton window. A year ago you may have gotten 2 9.8s and 2 9.6s on these exact same books. Or maybe even one lonely 9.8, back when that was the coveted grade.

That's a good point about new employees. I think it says on their website somewhere "at least two graders look at each book", I could be wrong though. Interesting point on Skottie's books. I do feel very lucky to have the only blue label 9.9 of Transformers 1 on the census out of only a 1,000 book print run. There is a bunch of signature series 9.9s and a 10 on the census, but I feel like mine is better. They bought theirs from Skottie's website and Skottie's team had them graded. I bought mine on ebay and pressed it myself and sent it in.

@@basementcomics4u Did you see the behind the scenes video CGC put out recently where they talked to one of their young female graders? It looks like half the graders are competent and the other half just got out of high school are covered in tattoos and do drugs in the bathroom all day, not serious people. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4q2ZaZ9h7qbq5Y

An interesting video. The curious psychology is to me that because now 9.9s are out there in the ether you're disappointed with what six months ago were the grades we were all hoping to get on submissions. Not a criticism, just an observation and it's something that we all do. Like when we sell a book for a great profit and then three days later the value jumps. Felt great when we sold it but now, not so much and we feel badly about it for a minute. I've subscribed and look forward to more videos. Take good care.

Lol, you aren't wrong. I am happy with my 9.8 skotties, I have a lot of them. I still only expect 9.8s, 9.9 is straight up gambling.

I was about to say ... for the spider-woman ... when you "can't see what's wrong" ... inspect all 4 corners ... any slight wear, minute tear etc ... keeps you out of 9.8 from what i have seen. Recently, my long-time comic dealer was showing me a box full of books that he got back from cgc ... scratching his head about the grades ... no joke ... in absolutely every case ... the only reason we could find in 9.6 books was that there was the slightest, almost imperceptible wear on at least 1 corner. When we looked at the ones that were 9.8, it was the corners that made the difference. But, you really had to be looking for it.
@basementcomics4u2 ай бұрын
Yeah, it made total sense when I actually looked. I don't make or take notes on my books on defects before I send them like some people do, so I usually inspect them after they get back if I am confused. I prescreen a lot so that I dont get hosed lol.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the person doing the grading is the same person that is opening the box. It's likely that the grader never saw the post-it.
@basementcomics4u2 ай бұрын
I addressed this is a previous comment, you could be right. However, I think they do because how many 9.8s (or even 9.6s) do you know that have graders notes? Every single one of my 9.8s involved in the sticky note thing have graders notes (multiple submissions).

I don’t think the grader would see your post it because they don’t do the unboxing. Someone unboxes them first. They inventory the submission and put a barcode on each bag/board. If there is a post it they would probably be removed during this step. I think they store the books in short boxes after that step and thats when your status changes to scheduled for grading. Grader most likely will grab the book scan the barcode and grade it. Once done they put it back in the shortbox in the same bag/board with the barcode and it goes to encapsulation where the barcode gets scanned again. However if you put painters tape on your bag/board I highly doubt anyone would try and remove that :)
@basementcomics4u2 ай бұрын
You may be right and I can definitely see it working that way. But, I honestly think it does get to them. My only evidence is that every time I have done it, the ones that got 9.8s all had graders notes, every single one. And you know as well as I do, they don't even put graders notes on 9.6s, let alone a 9.8

Very interesting. So in your opinion, the note DOES have an effect on the psychological state of the grader but whether that effects them positively or negatively is unpredictable, is that right?
@basementcomics4u3 ай бұрын
Yes, I did end up finding the grader did put graders notes on each book as to why they weren't a 9.9 and I kind of agree but could argue what he found was only good enough to knock it from a 10 to a 9.9. However, I do believe they wouldn't have even checked for 9.9 and just given me 9.8s with no graders notes if I hadn't put that sticky note on there.
