Another batch of Franklin half dollar proofs fresh from the grading company. This is going to be the last batch we unbox and open like this for a while so if you like this type of content be sure to let me know in the comments, if you dont, well then stick around and look for the next one because coin content is coming heavy. 9:50- agree 100%. When competing with human nature it’s a tricky thing to confirm which is correct I suspect they have safeguards in place meaning the same graders aren’t sitting there for an 8 hour shift sifting through all 500 of your bulk 58 50c to give them the credit they’re aware of fatigue and how the eyes play tricks after so long and diversify and take measures preventing such things One would hope anyway …

Videos like this make small collectors like me dread sending coins in… these were some of the best coins I’ve ever seen and I was surprised at the low grades.

I understand what you are saying but its all a numbers game, when you are just starting out its much easier to take the good with the bad because they are onsie twosie, or small coin submissions. this just looks bad because of how many coins were in the batch. dont hold back, get motivated.. for every batch like this I have one on the other end of the extreme.. If you watch my early videos there is one where I am unboxing some SMS sets, I found 4 1965 sets with black and white half dollars.. I ended up selling those for like $14K or something crazy like that.

Did they give you any cameos this time. Somehow I missed it if they did. May have to rewatch. :) One thought I was having is that the grading companies are so busy they must be hiring new employees. The new employees are likely getting trained up. Maybe they are making sure the green horns dont crash the populations. Were any of these dipped? Did they all just look that beautiful. Out of all the sets what would you say the percentage of coins were worthy of being submitted to be graded. I remember someone talking about set up coins once when talking about cameos. Giving the grader a ugly coin and then a real stunner so that they would see how worthy it was. Thanks for the video friend. Like the new music too. :)

Thanks on the music, I really do not dip proof coins. Only in extreme scenarios... SET UP coins are a real thing although not for bulk batches like this... and NO CAMEOS, NO STARS. I dont have numbers on the other questions yet, other than out of these 800 proof sets, I havent sent them all yet, but they are the nicest proof sets I have seen..

I agree with you on the mass grading. The graders must do hundreds per day and I would think they grade the 1st and the last of their day by the same standard. Man, I never seen so many beautiful coins ay one time. Really cool!

thank you much... honestly, as soon as I have a process that determines where I send them, it changes... It boils down to what Im grading, what else is going out that week, and a whole bunch of other unimportant factors.. I try not to overthink it. bulk always goes to NGC... thats about the only rule..

Definitely see some that have cameo. I believe it has to be noticeable on both sides. Hard to tell from the video. They just don't like giving out that cameo destination

correct.... Where are the stars though? I have done this for 10 years, made a good living, I know what Im doing and for them to have no cams/no stars... thats a grading issue... but its OK. I know the game I play.. it Ebbs and Flows.

most had frosty contrast, contrast doesnt equal cameo... but some were/are definately cameo IMO... depends on the grader and the day.

some of those are very clearly cameos and even some full bell lines. id rather be missinga few cameos then them get crazy and start gradeing em ms 65 and 64 and makeing them useless. 67s and 68s are awesome grades ether way.

Hey Chris, cool video. Either NGC is tightening their cameo standards or its a human nature thing when you see so many nice, clean and frosty coins, they in some ways become average in relation to each other. If the grader gets 200 Franklins that are super clean and mark free and if sent individually would b 69s or 68s, they aren't going to give you 200 68s or 69s. That said, and if true, not sure what the answer is to get more high grades returned.

The paper would have to be a separate submission to PMG so I’m not sure if that’d work. Also I’m pretty sure Chris isn’t into paper. Although it would be a really cool video with a variety like that!

I get that looking at 1958 proof sets are old.. I got a deal with 800 sealed 1958 proof sets last year so thats what all these are... I will be doing plenty of other things soon.. Although, this is a good demonstration of how doing what I do everyday can get to the point where its not the most exciting thing in the world... But yes, lots more to come.

Wow, it’s time to get off the franklins brother. Especially with no cameos. I mean shit the 68s you can get all day long for 80-100$ , I kind of feel bad for you with the grading fees and everything. Like gramma used to say, some days chicken some days feathers. Better luck next time. I haven’t gotten a star in any of my pieces in over a year in a half. I probably submit anywhere from 60 to 80 pieces a month.

I kinda think that sending a lot of the same coin might affect the grade as well. Yes, they SHOULD grade them all based on the individual coin. However, as long as coins are graded by humans there will be errors. Not that they are purposely being spiteful. But i know that for me when I look at the same coin over and over again, that I tend to get an eye fatigue, and maybe get on a kind of auto pilot. Granted I don't consider myself a professional grader, as they do, and I know they have more time and experience. But they are still hoomans. That said, some of those definitely looked DCAM to me!

Yeah, I understand what you are saying. I specifically and intentionally stay under 250 coins per bulk batch when I submit in bulk. But I know guys who are submitting literally thousands, tens of thousands of the exact same coin to the graders... (more modern if we are talking tens of thousands... but same thing).

Hey Chris, quick question: should I go to coin shows to purchase large amount of coins for grading and flipping? Or does that depend on the show? I've been getting better at a few types of coins in terms of guessing their potential grades, so I was just looking to buy a decent bulk (but nothing too big). I assume shows are the way to go if I don't have connections basically.

I cant really answer that for you, other than stressing that it doesnt matter where you buy the material, just as long as you know what you are buying and have developed your eye good enough so that you know what to send and what not to.

funny you mention that, I usually will set aside stars/cams/ultracams and not include them in bulk batch for this reason.. but when you buy a deal of 800 sealed 1958 proof sets, its hard to go through and screen out the frostys... So I just sent them, had faith in the process.. It didnt work this time. Next time maybe.. I still have faith in the process, to some degree anyway...

LOL... proofs are really hard to grade with video/pics, and especially in plastic cases... In other words, most of the time, especially on modern proofs... a PF66 looks the same as a PF69.. it is having it in hand and rolling it under light where you start seeing the difference. great observation though.

First of all why? second of all, what makes you think I havent/dont/am not in the real game? Dont get me wrong, I know what you mean. Most dealers call them "real coins", and I do enjoy those... But I follow the markets and go where they money is. I find my own lane and go out of my way to make it a lane that has less traffic. For example, go to a large coin show, you will see 90% tables filled with classic gold and Morgan dollars... Im not ever going to do what everyone else does. It goes against my nature! Yeah something is fishy and I think you hit it on the head when you said "Business" because that's how they have to operate and when you have 100's of employee's and overhead and marketing etc... they will milk submitting out and I think even under grade to have collectors to resubmit and you are not the only one having issues with submissions nonsense because you are right "Its a game" but now there should be a standard across the board but there is not Just ask CoinHelpyou or CoinGeek they will agree its a game they are playing and what also they want is control of the market on the high end graded coins they want it static because they are also in bed with Auction companies like Stack's and Heritage to get more for there coins because like you said its a Business and Just like the US Mint is doing as well is going with the Business not the customer or the collector because it's all about control and profit !

Great question: 2 things.... First, I thought I would crush it. 58 is a better year and even though I paid a huge premium for the sets because they were sealed, if NGC would have graded the coins with the usual percentages I have been getting on my bulk of PF67/68/69's I would be crushing it... You dont know how it will go until you do it. Sportscards are tough right now though too.. grading is 2 years out, they have a 10 million card backlog and they just doubled rates... AGAIN. So I will find my way, somewhere in the middle.
