Is everyone in Connecticut a rich elitist snob?
Did everyone here go to UCONN?
And are there ANY good beaches in this state?
We’ll answer those questions AND more. So, grab your snobby bottle of rose, and try not to get shot, we’re going to unbox the state of Connecticut!
Man. What a really pretty scene we have here. This is Connecticut. It’s fall, and as you can tell, the season is in bloom. There’s nothing quite like fall in Connecticut. And then winter comes and this place is miserable until March.
But Connecticut is a lot more than just autumn leaves. For such a small state, it’s really diverse. Some parts are New York City light and some are Massachusetts...ish. It’s kind of a combination of the Hamptons, Detroit and Alabama. There’s lots of rich people here - in fact, some of the wealthiest areas in the nation. But its inner cities are miserable, and there’s rednecks all over the rural parts. But we’re getting way ahead of ourselves.
For a more complete picture of Connecticut we need to look at things from a higher level and then check out each county and region.
This is Connecticut.

@strongbad666 Sorry my wording might have confused you, but your reading it wrong. I’m from CT and warning you NOT TO LIVE in this state. It’s like California but much smaller, colder, and with nothing to do. Why do you think thousands leave every year? Taxes, boredom, crime, poor job opportunities, income inequality, etc. It’s truly awful! At least I’ve heard DE has decent beaches - this state has 0 decent ones, at least the ones I’ve been too and I live on the Coast. Again why do you think most people are literally fleeing? And I’m going to be one of them in several years.

I grew up in Monterey California, and have now been living the past two years in Connecticut. Honestly, between the two coasts, the elitist snobbery it's something I've encountered far more on the West coast than the East Coast. New Englanders in particular are reserved but once you get to know them they are actually very warm and authentic. I've encountered far more superficial people living in California than I ever have living here in Connecticut. Just my observation...

There are many claims to who invented the Hamburger. One version has it that it was invented at the Erie County Fair held in Hamburg New York . The claim I subscribe to is that it was invented in New Haven CT 1895, at Louis’ Lunch. It is still being served by the fourth generation of owners in the originial building and using the original vertical toasters in New Haven, CT. Don't ask for ketshup, you won't get any. Bridgeport was a beautiful thriving city but started going downhill in the 60s. Their factories made 2/3 of the ammunition used by our military in WW2. Two things happened after the war, the factories started moving elsewhere so they could pay cheaper wages while at the same time, thousands of poor people from the south and Puerto Rico moved up thinking they could get good jobs in the factories. No jobs, but they stayed. Wait, a third thing happened: Bridgeport was run by corrupt mayors and their buddies who exacerbated the decline. Their rule caused Bridgeport homeowners to pay higher property taxes than the wealthy towns to the south. Some time in the 70s Paul Newman who lived two towns away, said Bridgeport was the armpit of New England. Decades later he apologized. If PT Barnum, a former mayor, could see what happened to his city he would weep. Also, Bridgeport has the most beautiful municipal beach in the state. Designed by Olmstead it comprises 375 acres and a 2.5 mile road and sidewalk along the shore. Barnum was a large land donor for it. Most other CT town shorelines have skimpy beaches with no road, because the vast majority of the shoreline property was allowed to be bought up by the wealthy.

Born and raised in Hartford before moving to Puerto Rico and people always ask me which do I prefer and can never give them a straight answer because they’re very different places. I go back every now and then because I have family up there and I like it a lot despite whatever problems are mentioned. Went to CT for thanksgiving in 2018 and drove around and did a whole bunch of stuff with my family and never got bored. I think it depends on your personality, if you’re a calm, not in a rush, history loving person, it’s perfect. But if you like the heavy and active city life, then go somewhere else honestly because it will be boring as you mentioned a few times because it’s true. I would honestly go back because it fits my life style perfectly unlike here in PR whose government is more corrupt than the US as a whole and that says a lot and crime is soaring.

I'm from the Bronx, work and stay in Harlem all week because my Job gives me a rent free apartment. I bought a weekend home in CT 4 years ago and love leaving heading up on the weekends, especially now with COVID. A few of my friends bought homes too. You get a bang for your buck compared to houses in the Bronx where the yards are tiny, houses are so tight your neighbor can peek through your window, there is no parking in the streets etc. I got the best of both worlds though and I'm not complaining!

I moved to Connecticut a year ago for work. Became close friends with a co-worker & bought a motorcycle. Wanted to get a bigger bike so I went to sell it on FB Marketplace. Found a person interested in it, was a younger kid, and not knowing Connecticut at the time I went forward with the deal. Kid didn't have a vehicle so I delivered it to him.. in Waterbury. As soon as I entered Waterbury I seen boarded up houses & it looked straight up ghetto. I'm not a person to judge others so I said eh, whatever I'll continue. Unloaded the bike for the kid to test ride it & he took off. No where to be found as I circled the blocks quite a few times. Houses in Waterbury have driveways on the side with garages sitting in the back so most likely it's in one of them. Learned my lesson to have cash in hand when dealing with people and to stay out of Waterbury. Nothing but criminals there as the Police Officer said that I ran into just down 2 blocks from where I got my bike stolen. It's been about 6 months since the incident, no info from the police yet. Connecticut is sketchy.

Having travelled throughout the country, I can say that one of the things I value about Connecticut when I get back is the amount of educated and sensible people there. I was shocked at the amount of uneducated people you will encounter in the South and Midwest. I think that for many is the big draw in the state--living amongst people who can use their minds. It may not sound important but when you are surrounded with people who do not value education or have limited ability to think or express themselves clearly (yes, I mean rednecks and hillbillies) you feel like you've entered the twilight zone.

Lake life in the summer, fall fairs and festivals and pumpkin picking, city adventures, the art scene, kayaking, the race tracks, the shoreline... So much to do. We'll always have a home here. My husband and I explore different towns around CT every weekend and there is so much to do. We also bought a kayak this year and we find a new body of water to explore all of the time. We're been back here five years and we are always finding a new place to explore and fantastic food. People who say it is boring or not diverse don't get out much or talk to anyone outside their circles. I love knowing that other people have gratitude for CT. I really struggled culturally and financially outside of Connecticut and it was a relief to be back. I'm a small town girl at heart who also loves to go off and explore. The best of both worlds.

No longer able to say "April showers bring May flowers". We used to have my daughters Birthday parties outside in May but not so much anymore.

I hope Foxwoods comped you for snubbing Mohegan sun. That should be be worth a free weekend. Funny map, and well done ! Great captains hat ! How did you know so fast that gossip is CT’s official state hobby.

There's clam pizza in New Haven too. That's one of the things they're known for and it's not bad.

Ha !!! Live in Norwalk Ct . So funny seeing how folks look at us . In fact it a awesome place to live . Taxes are high traffic sucks and everyone is always in a rush . New Yorker are now moving in and the small New England charm is be lost in the mix . So now when you hit the age when you slow down it time to move south !!!

I lived in CT for almost 26 years before I moved to SoCal. The majority of the time being in Shelton. Honestly... I thought i was a really nice place to grow up. Sometimes I really miss the seasons. Especially around Thanksgiving and Christmas. But I hate cold weather too much to ever move back.

5 generations of my family lived there, in the river valley near gillette's, but it got so unaffordable it became an impossible dream for my mom, a single parent nurse, to own a home where she and then I grew up. we just kept getting pushed further away from the river and into the city due to housing until finally she said 'screw it' and moved to maine when I was about 18, where she was able to buy 60 acres and a big farm house. The economic disparity is hard to understand if you haven't lived it. I've lived and traveled all over the country and abroad but I still miss the river there.

Not all parts of Hartford are bad. Prospect Avenue, along the western edge, near Elizabeth Park and the Governor's Mansion, is really nice, albeit expensive. The surrounding towns, like West Hartford, Windsor, and Farmington, are perfectly nice.

I live in CT and a few months back decided to join the Army, since then I probably met hundreds if not thousands of people from Basic training to AIT, yet I only met ONE person from my state, quite amazing that I met more people from Hawaii than CT....It's really a small state....
