I think you hit a 6 here H&K! Quite impressed. I wasn't all that keen on the short snippets you posted last week, and to be frank, I wasn't always impressed with Rabs tone, regardless of what he played. Don't get me wrong, very nice player and seems like a lovely bloke, but something about his sound didn't grab me. However once he got IN to the amp, he pulled some NICE sounds out of it. I think you need to demo it with a few different style players to show its warmth, (which I know it HAS if set & played right). Rab is a metal player mostly, so will go for the harsher sounds, BUT that pure clean sound impressed me much! It was warm, clear, articulate, and organic sounding, like the best Vox or Fender amps. It wasn't ice picky or sterile sounding like some amps tend to do, even with all valve circuitry! AND it sounded authentic recorded with the red box. Nice work H&K!
@HughesandKettneramps8 жыл бұрын
Thank you sir, we're glad this video had more sounds to your liking! We know what you mean about Rabea representing a certain genre/era of tone, and we will of course be doing many more demos of the amp with as wide a variety of players as we can :)

Hughes & Kettner Great! You blokes, certainly are leading the market I think, in value for money amps, that are a step above the budget market, (i.e. Bugera) which are nice too, don't get me wrong, but since I bought my TM18, they certainly sound a step above that brand! Prost!

Seriously interested in one of these but instead of the H&K board I would like to use a Boss ES-8 to select the patches created. If you don't have the H&K board and create a patch how do you know what location 1-128 the patch is saved in?I guess you can use the iPad app to save it to any location then call up the corresponding patch via the es-8's assign/ midi PC command?If so... take my money now... ;-P
@HughesandKettneramps8 жыл бұрын
Ha ha, we've not used the ES-8 so we can't say anything with 100% certainty. But looking at the Boss site, we reckon it'll be exactly the same to operate as our FSM footswitch. When you save the preset you choose where you do so with the pedal...

Other than price, what are the major differences between the Tubemeister 40 & the Grandmeister 40? They both sound amazing.
@HughesandKettneramps6 жыл бұрын
Hey there, and thanks! Think of the GrandMeister as your all-in-one amp: it has the four channels (Clean, Crunch, Lead, Ultra) plus built-in FX (delay, reverb, modulations), noise gate, etc., and it's all programmable via MIDI so you can make up to 128 different presets. The TM40, on the other hand, is a pure rocking tube amp with three channels (Clean, Crunch, Lead) and less other features - there's not even reverb on it. And it does work with MIDI, but you can't save all the individual pot settings like you can on the GrandMeister. Both amps have the Red Box DI, power soak, FX Loop and other features on the back too. So, we'd say that the GM40 is your do-it-all solution - but if you've already got a decent pedal board, or are just looking for pure rocking tube tones to work with, the TM40 has all you need! That was a brief explanation, but hopefully covered everything! Let us know if you have any more questions though and we're happy to answer :) Team H&K

I'm new to cabs and heads. What can would you recommend I use with grandmeister 40?
@HughesandKettneramps8 жыл бұрын
Hmm, you can't go wrong with the H&K TM212 2x12. Our TM cabs were built to fit perfectly with our Meister heads. There's also a TM112 1x12 version, but you should play both and choose what sounds better to you. Of course, there are many, many other cab types and brands out there too, so if you've got like a specific type of music you play, there might be something else that suits you better. If you can, we'd recommend you spend some time with your guitar and the Meister in a store trying out al the different cabs you can - then go home with the one you prefer :)

Is Redbox load reactive or resistive? I know it doesn't matter if it sounds good, but still, which is it? Since freq curve depends on it and it depends what type of cab impulse responses to use, created with solid or tube power amp.

Good question, and the answer is... reactive! We must admit we had to ask our techs about that one ;)

such a sick amp! and I like that you can bring it down to 1 watt! usually the bigger amps will only go down to 5 or 20w! I was going to get the 18w but I think Ill hold out for this! my only question is whats the main differences between this and the grandmeister 36w?
@HughesandKettneramps7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the nice comments James :) Hmm, the difference between this and the GM36? The two significant ones are: 1. Sounds. The 40 has a whole new preamp design, so all four channels sound different. Try both if you can, see which you prefer ;) 2. The Red Box DI output on the back. The GM40 has the newer, technically improved Red Box AE, which is FRFR-ready and also offers you better sounds and more sound-shaping options than the previous edition you'll find on the GM36. So if you're recording a lot, or plugging into the PA for live stuff, you'll certainly find the newer one better. Hope this helps!

I heard a H and K many moons ago in a guitar show in Manchester and I clearly remember it, as it made the hairs on my arms stand on end !! Didn't get one because I simply couldn't afford one. But, I need a GrandMeister NOW !! :) One question though, How loud is it ? Could it cope in a live set-up competing with a reasonably hard hitting drummer without micing the amp up? Thanks.
@HughesandKettneramps7 жыл бұрын
Well, if it was Manchester it could well have been our good friend Gavin Coulson playing it, which would explain that - he's a super player :) But anyway, to the question: 40 tube-powered watts are way louder than most people expect, and the GM will keep up with most drummers. That said, if your drummer is particularly loud and you want pure pristine clean headroom, we'd recommend a trial first, just in case. Don't forget though, with the GM amps you don't need to mic up either, you can go straight into the PA with the Red Box... Hope this helps!

yes I know it can be set lower and there is NO reason for you to set it at a lower price....I was just saying it is a great amp but out of my price and playability range.... I wish I could play that well so I could justify buying this amp....and sorry I don't by ANYTHING used......
@HughesandKettneramps8 жыл бұрын
Aha, now we get what you mean! Lost in translation somewhere ;) It's a difficult one, the 'playability' and justification factor. We're at a point in our lives where we just say, "if it feels right, go for it!" We're as afflicted by GAS as any other guitarists we know. Although that sad, guitars, amps and gear is our 'job ' too...
@paweljackowski76297 жыл бұрын
Ok, I gotta ask. I got a Load Box (Suhr Reactive Load) and I'm wondering whether the Red Box that's built in this amp does the same job when it comes to recording without a mic? Is it also a load box and can be used with torpedo Wall of Sound?
@HughesandKettneramps7 жыл бұрын
Hi Pawel! We've not used the Wall Of Sound, but we just read up on it and we think that it'll work just fine in a DAW with the GM40. Ask the guys at Torpedo to be 100% sure though. And yes, the GM40 takes the load when you've not got a cab connected, and it is all sent to the Red Box AE - you just go from the Red Box to your audio interface, and that's it!
@projectsapiens73147 жыл бұрын

Ok, I recorded some demo tracks both directly from Red Box into sound card and via Load Box. Red Box seems ok, but still I wouldn't use it for recording and album in a home studio. When running through the Load Box the amp sounds GREAT!!! Clean and Crunch are amazing, delay blew me away. I'm still trying to find my sweet spot for the lead channel (I'm getting there) but overall this is the best sounding, most versatile, most feature packed, the lightest (7.7kg packing 40w!!! I've owned 5w that weight the same or more) and the coolest amp I ever played on. For home use it's really great (with separate load box and torpedo) and I can't wait to start some serious recording once I find my lead sound. I haven't tried the app since I don't have an ipad, but dialing a sound is pretty straight forward. Overall, GREAT JOB!!! Thanks for creating such a great amp, I hope I'll have a chance to try it on stage as well. Are you planning on making an iphone / android phone version of an app?
@HughesandKettneramps7 жыл бұрын
OK, thanks for the cool feedback - we always appreciate it. For a different load box sound, try Rabea's own review, where he uses his Torpedo and the Red Box: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIqZhaiFm7N5mM0 He gets some great sounds out of both, we think. And thanks for the kind words about the amp: we're glad you're enjoying the flexibility and tones! This amp would be great for me. I play in a covers band so all the different tones and sounds would be ideal. Would i have a problem playing this with my band live though with no PA? Can it stand up to playing with our drummer who is unbelievably loud? I am currently playing a JCM-900 100 watt half stack and that struggles.....
@HughesandKettneramps7 жыл бұрын
You're right that it would be perfect tone-wise! It's really practical for players who need a wide variety of tones at a gig - with the MIDI, you can have a preset (or bank of presets) prepped for each song/style. About pure volume though, we're not going to lie: if a 100-watt half stack is not loud enough you'll struggle with the 40-watt GM40. Sure, 40 watts and 100 watts are fairly close in volume (way closer than the numbers suggest!) but if 100 won't cut it, 40 won't either. If you're struggling with the 100-watt amp though and having to mic it, the Red Box AQE DI on the GM40 will make that whole process a lot easier, better and consistent sounding.
@collismusic37207 жыл бұрын
Yeah i really like the built in red box feature and that will at some point be what i will need to do. At the moment though i dont have the option to DI into the PA because the PA is full. No doubt about it though this amp sounds amazing and if we had a quieter drummer would be perfect for me lol

@HughesandKettneramps7 жыл бұрын
Hi Daan! The Switchblade 100 is killer indeed. You can think of the GM40 as the Switchblade's modern-day, smaller brother, with a load of new bits. The sounds are all different, of course, and it also has a load of new technical features - the Red Box AE DI out, for example, which is great for recording, and for live use (it means you wont miss the extra power!). And of course with the GM40 you can save all your sounds via MIDI - but every pot is saveable, including EQ and gain settings (everything but Master Volume can be saved this way), so you have even more power in your preset making :) Oh, and unfortunately the app is GrandMeister only. Hope this helps, but let us know if you have any other questions about the differences! Team H&K in Germany

When are you gonna make something like Grandmeister without effects and midi stuff. I like the sound but it would be cheaper without the effects. I think it would sell like an ice cream in summer.... I allready have my favourite fx on my pedal board =)
@HughesandKettneramps8 жыл бұрын
Hmm, the closest is TubeMeister Deluxe, although you're right... the sounds are a little different and there's no Ultra channel. We'll add this idea to the wishlist ;)

Point being, kinda silly to say something like that considering HE is doing the demos.

Ha ha, we know what you mean. Although that said, until he opened that box in the video, Rabea had no idea what was inside, what the amp would even be, or anything! We kept him in the dark about it completely so his reactions would be totally spontaneous. But of course we let him get his hands on one afterwards ;)

@HughesandKettneramps8 жыл бұрын
Depends where you live - it's already out in parts of Europe, and is heading to places like the USA and further afield as fast as we can ship it :)
@guitarguts6662 жыл бұрын
hmmm going back to this one as I have it. The one thing you can't change on the front of the amp is the PATCH number you're on. You have to do that in the app or with the foot controller. The app, you need to buy the 200.00 midi/wifi adapter. So kids don't be confused here, the ipad app doesn't work unless you have the WMI-1
This is the way how it should be done, small enough, enough power, MIDI settings so people can put it in the rack and use it with other things as well, love it!

Thanks Matěj!

I think I'm gonna need one of those very soon, sounds awesome and seem like it was desinged by me in terms of fonctionalities (except there are options I would'nt have thought about like the red box) and it's compact ! But please, it's rack sized so you should release a rack mount kit pour this. Other than that it's a perfect amp, 9.5/10 (for the rack mounts). Cheers !

Hi to all, one little big question : I do not know if u own one "grandmaster deluxe 40", but I do, since thursday. That thing gets really warm, wouldn't it be better to take off the plexi-glass front cover, for now I don't see no other solution to provide for better cooling, ................................................or what is ur advice ?
@HughesandKettneramps8 жыл бұрын
Hi Marine Forces, all the Meister amps get pretty hot, especially if you use the power soak (as it converts energy into heat, see the blog we wrote explaining that here: blog.hughes-and-kettner.com/why-is-it-not-just-grand-but-also-hot/). You don't need to worry about it - just make sure the amp is not covered or in a confined space where there's no ventilation. There's no need to take off the front cover or anything - we would not recommend that at all because if you do, your warranty is void. Hope this helps!
@marineforces32148 жыл бұрын
Hughes & Kettner Thanks for answering, that is very need of u. I partly agree, takin' off the plexi-front-cover will ruin completely the optic of the amp etc.. Guess what, I took off the lid, that helps. Because the frontcover is a close up in plastic, & the side walls are full cover plastic, that keeps the thing hot like a toaster (even without powersoak). Takein' of the lid will not ruin warranty because, no one can proof except he has copy of our conversation. ... Another additional idea (incl. takin' of the lid) would be to construct an additional cooling grill for the main Trafo (he is the reason for that heat emission, even without power soak), to extent heat transfer.
@marineforces32148 жыл бұрын
I have a scond very importand question for me : The end-tubes (not the pre-tubes) I am talking about, are they supposed rather distortion free, or should they have concerned to ur philosophy, some amount of distortion ability as well? Or to discribe it with other words : to gather that distortion and overdrive sound is that only the pre-amps-tubes job, or does that include the Power-tubes too.!?
@HughesandKettneramps8 жыл бұрын
No problem, always happy to help! Generally you can say the distortion comes from the preamp tubes. However, the more you increase the master volume, the more power amp distortion comes in. So it's kind of a mix, but generally we'd say preamp...
@marineforces32148 жыл бұрын
Hughes & Kettner That sounds interesting, because I wanted to exchange the END-Tubes of the GRAND MASTER DELUXE 40 into a selected quartet of GROOVE TUBES. And since they have an additional classification in between 1 and 10, I wonder which one would HUGHES & KETTNER recommend. I am sure u know what I'm talkin' about, do u .!?, and to be honest, I love the amp so much, I want to keep it as original as possible. p.s.: for exsample : 1 would mean early distortion, and 10 late distortion(the EndTubes). If u suggest at least some amount of distortion for the EndTubes, I guess maybe 8 would be the right decision. ...I am all ready curious, to listen, if GROOVE TUBE can provide some noticeable sound difference compared to the stock tubes .!?, even if I can keep the EndTubes distortion level same as stock.

What pickups does he have in that Chapman?
@HughesandKettneramps6 жыл бұрын
We can't tell you for certain. We think he's put Bare Knuckle pickups in that guitar, but not 100% sure - otherwise they'd be the generic Chapman pups. Sounded killer either way!

What (apart from 4watts) is new on this vs the grandmeister 36?
@HughesandKettneramps8 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon. Well, first off is the sounds - the GM40 has a totally new preamp design on it (inspired by our TriAmp Mark 3), so the four channels are all significantly different to before. Then, you've got the latest versions of all the other features, like the Red Box AE (which is a big improvement on the Red Box on the GM36, for example...) :)

Thanks for the response. Looks like I will have to upgrade then! :)love my 36 so perhaps I need both ;)

This may very well be my next amp. Never had a H&K before. Anyone comment on reliablility level, customer support, etc? I'm in USA.
@HughesandKettneramps7 жыл бұрын
We wanted to wait a bit before stepping in here, because obviously we're biased ;) But no one else has answered, so... we like to think the relaibility Levels on our amps are pretty damn good (and of course you've got a two-year warranty in the USA should anything go wrong in that time). As for customer Support: we always answer online to any questions, and we'd hope you'll always hear back from our Dealers in the States too should you have any questions. Now it's just down to you to try one and see if you like the way it Plays and sounds :) Let us know your thoughts when you do!

My main question, how loud does it go?
@HughesandKettneramps7 жыл бұрын
Define loud! 40 watts of tube power can get very loud indeed. Loud enough to play with a live drummer? With 99% of drummers, yes. Loud enough to gig with? Depends, but you can mic it up or use the Red Box AE easily. Loud enough to drive a 4x12 cab? Sure! Hopefully this answers your question, but let us know if you had something else in mind...

Can VOLUME be controlled in real time with a MIDI controller? If I have a MIDI foot controller with a rocker pedal, can it be assigned to control the volume of the amp in real time? (Can I do volume swells like a pedal steel player would do? Can I turn down when I need to allow the sax player room for his solo?) That would be THE MOST ESSENTIAL use of MIDI in my situation.
@HughesandKettneramps7 жыл бұрын
Hi Guitarburt, it sure can! Control Number 7, to be precise ;) There's a list of all the cool MIDI stuff you can do on page 12 of the GM40 manual, here if you fancy a look: hughes-and-kettner.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/GM_Deluxe_40_BDA_1_1.pdf Hope this helps :) Oh, and we also blogged about the MIDI possiblities with the GrandMeister 36 - but all the info still applies for the 40, if you fancy reading that too: blog.hughes-and-kettner.com/128-ways-midi-will-change-your-life-as-a-live-guitarist/
@Guitarburt7 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! This makes this amp pretty appealing. I have a DV Mark Multiamp which can have a "volume pedal" as one of it's effects block. Unfortunately, the company for no reason at all decided to make the CC# "27" instead of "7" which makes it incompatible with the rest of the universe. For that reason, that amp sits in my studio and doesn't get used much. I am imagining the possibilities.
@HughesandKettneramps7 жыл бұрын
No problem! Yes, we do sometimes wonder when something goes outside the MIDI standards like that. Kind of defies our efficient German logic ;) But anyway, hopefully you'll like the sounds (and the features!) of the GM40 if you do try one and it can do a job for you...
@julianvandenboom86338 жыл бұрын

Hughes & Kettner another suggestion/question is can you get the android app working or up to date or is there a technical reason preventing it?

There is no GM40 Android app yet Dave, although our friend who made the GM36 Android app is working on one! We'll announce it as soon as he gets it done.
@DaveThomson7 жыл бұрын
I can't get the GM36 android app to work on my HTC, not sure why that it is.
@HughesandKettneramps7 жыл бұрын
Hmm, could be a compatibility issue, or something else - there's so many different Android devices and operating systems it's hard to keep track. This is one of the main reasons we only do Apple ones ;) Anyway, what you can do is use the troubleshooting page on the Android app site, and the developer should be able to help you out. You can try asking us here first if you like, but if it's too complex that's where we'd have to direct you anyway :(

@Rouwiinator7 жыл бұрын
Dave Thomson I see thanks man the redbox does seem pretty amazing though.
@HughesandKettneramps7 жыл бұрын
The preamp design is totally different, so all the channels sound different to the 36... The GM40 preamp is based off the TriAmp Mark 3 (whereas the 36 wasn't). Simply put, the GM40 will do you more classic clean sounds, and it's channels stay cleaner longer - so if you set the gain at 12 o'clock on the crunch channel (for example) the GM36 will have more crunch than the 40! That's a very basic overview, but you get the idea :) Oh, and the GM40 also has a couple of new 'master' features - presence, resonance and power soak can now be set to master, so all your poresets have same one. (This means, for example, it's really easy to practice at home with all your presets on 1 watt, and then flick to 40 watts for the gig!)

Ah, we know what you mean. But Rabea's Chapman double cutaway has pretty much the highest output Bare Knuckle pickups in it, so it's not really a Strat. He got some massive heavy sounds out of them here. This video is actually a massive cut of the shoot we did - Rabea and Rich sat down for like two hours and just went through everything on the amp. There's loads more Rabea playing to come in more videos, and loads more metal too. Hopefully it'll be more your thing!
