So if the mridang is tuned only once, I guess that heavy tuning mechanism doesn't have much value, but affects classic mridang body shape. Some mix of indestructible mridang with pretuned madhura mridang like membranes would be ideal.

If you live near a "mridanga Walla" and you can guarantee that the drum you are getting is Ahimsa (from animals that died naturally) I would recommend getting a clay drum. But if you live in a western country or there is no mridanga walla in your town, I would recommend getting this. The problem is that a lot of people will tell you the drums they are selling are Ahimsa but most of the time the leather comes from the slaughter house.

Hare Krishna, yes, it is an ahimsa mridanga so the leather is hard to come by. The devotee who made it used nylon for the straps and leather for the heads so he could make more mridangas with the leather he got. The nylon is also more durable. The body is fiberglass.

As long is you can find an Ahimsa Mridanga, they are the best. But if you need to play on a rainy day or if you can't find an ahimsa khol, this one is best. Paying for cow killing is the main issue.

This is called Dolak used in North India. Mridanga is a South Indian percussion instrument. I bought one Mridangam from Dr. Varada rangan who is the inventer and maker of this kind of fully fiber percussion instruments without any animal skin and wood. My mridangam is giving a very good tone and can be easily tuned. He is in Bangalore, India.

Dr. Varada is an amazing person to have invented such a beautiful sounding instrument, free from the taint of violence. To my knowledge, the drums in South India that you are referring to are called Mridangam. The Northeastern drum that this one is fashioned after has two names - Khol and Mridanga. In Sanskrit, Mrida (मृदा) means "clay" and "anga" means body, a well-suited name for the clay-bodied drum.
