Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a wonderful book. All of Lisa See's books are wonderful. What makes this book special to me is that it is based on a true period of time where women in Hunan, China created their own Secret language. My daughter was born in Hunan and I loved reading the book with her so she could learn about her ancestral homeland. I hope you enjoy the book.

Haha that's great! It's pretty unusual in English right? It wasn't the correct pronunciation for the woman in the book though, as I'm guessing the alpine village is in Germany, Austria or Switzerland so it would be pronounced as a German word. Basically just means that the 'th' is pronounced as a simple t.

I heard yesterday that you were considering reading more literature from around the world and I can't wait to see that. If you are to include France in your list, would you consider reading from lesser known but extremely important writers from the French oversea territories? I'm mostly thinking about Aimé Césaire, who kick started the 'négritude mouvement' in Francophone literature (mostly in the French overseas territories and in Africa). Some of his most important book are "Notebook of a Return to My Native Land" (book-long poem) and the essay "Discourse on Colonialism". (Also French poetry is quite different from English one in term of rules and metric so don't pay much attention to that, ahah) But yeah, the influence of Césaire on Black identify and views of the colonialism was very important for us Carribbean as well as a lot of African Countries. The mouvement of Négritude (~Blackness) was created by Aimé Césaire (Martinique), Léon-Gontran Damas (French Guiana) and Léopold Sédar Senghor (he will become the first President of Senegal - he also wrote their national anthem). Similarly to the BLM mouvement, many believe that Négritude was a anti-white mouvement. But it was the emphasis that Blackness can be smart TOO, can be unique TOO, can be beautiful TOO and is something that you CAN and SHOULD be proud off. It changed the relationship of many French Black people and African about what it means to be Black, to have slaves as your ancestors, to have been under Colonial ruling and what it means for our identity and our future. They also changed our relationship with the "N word" to something different from what the Afro-American have done. "Nègre" now meant some grand, something extraordinary, something to be proud off and to be celebrated. I do not know for other countries, but where I come from the "Nègre" (m) and "Négresse" (f), is basically the most revered way to describe a Black person. We do not use this word lightly because it is basically THE highest compliment you can give to a Black person. Like if I am referring to a woman as a Négresse to a friend, for example, just with that word my friend will know that this woman : is strong, is smart, is resourceful, is beautiful, is whatever attributes you associate with a role model and an amazing person. Even if our definition does not match, the idea that this person is amazing is obvious. And usually (French) White people will not use that word, not because it is offensive and disrespectful like in the US, but because they do not understand the meaning and how strong that word is. At best, I will look at them confused because they have misused it. However, nowadays with the strong reaction of Afro-American whenever a White person uses that word, French people do try to avoid using it as well. It is worth noting that a lot of Black people are also uncomfortable with that word. Partly because of the overbearing influence that France has in our school system and our opinions of ourselves. But also because efforts to discredit that word and turn it into something it was never meant to be. Sorry for the long message, ahah. I was just going to drop a quick suggestion and move on but I got carried away. Even if one person read that comment, that will make my day. French oversea departments ("former" colonies) are not well known and never mentioned when people talk about French literature but we did have a huge influence on a global scale. Just not the typical Euro-centric one. Also, I would also recommend "L'Écume des Jours"/"Froth on the Daydream" and "I Spit on Your Grave" by Boris Vian. Warnings: the latter has a lot of potential triggers (racism, sexual violence, sexual assaults, and very very graphic and violent scenes, hateful speech) so please be careful with that one. The context around that book is also very interesting (Vian published that book under a different name, pretending to be the book of an African-American author that had been translated to French) and ALSO seeing the premiere of the movie gave him an heart attack and he died that night, so that's fun. This book was supposed to be some kind of parody of crime novel but attracted a lot of attention by the theme and medium it contains. "L'Écume des jours" is a lot more surrealistic and 'fun'. The latest movie adaptation is called "Mood Indigo" and is quite...unique. However, It is slightly science fiction-y, and I know it's not your cup of tea. I feel like I could fill up an entire blog on these subjects but I will stop here 😅 Thanks for this video and if you read my comment... Sorry.
