the zig zag fences were used because they were less prone to falling down over time. they were also made it easier to corner livestock, farm animals will run along a fence in order to find an exit. the zig zagging of the fences slowed them down and confused them so the farmers and ranchers were able to round them up easier. farmers eventually went with the straight fencing because the zig zag fences took up a lot of space

I got two of these as the basis for my ACW armies. They made a good start.

Jolly nice - don't tempt me into 28mm ACW, though. I'm doing enough Napoleonics at the moment. Looks like you guys will have some fun with this. :)

I bought this a few years ago and have it painted now and by gaming buddy has just bought his box (why Perry's never did the same with their excellent Wars of the Roses line is a puzzle). Agree that it is superb value. I swapped out the 45mm wide bases for the infantry to 50mm MDF simply because it gives the figures a little more room to breathe, particularly the command stand, which has the drummer. I also made the fences less angled, putting them on 1" wide strips, this looks better on the table and gave me 6' of fence instead of the 4' advertised.

Both sides wore kepis Both sides had swords for cavalry. Both sides had Cavalry rifles.

yes I know but people who order ACW always want kepis for union and hats for the other guys, although as far as cavalry goes union used carbines as standard where the south used anything from grand pa's old relic to breach loaders and shotguns
