I moved from San Francisco to a smallish town (50k pop) near Charleston 7 years ago. It’s true SC tends to be God fearing, but I’d rather fear God than my neighbors. I find the accent quite nice, it matches the summers, slow & sweet. Nick didn’t mention that Charleston is the #1 Tourist destination in the US or that’s it’s a serious foodie city. My small town has 2 great wine bars, one run by a French Sommelier. Good times, good people, good wine, what more could you want? The nice people & the beauty are what brought my husband & I to SC & we haven’t been disappointed. It’s true the summers are hot, but public & private pools abound & there’s nothing better than sinking into your pool on a hot southern day. Charleston also has the oldest museum in the US, plus many more. I recommend them highly. About the phrase “Bless Your Heart” I’m happy to say no one has ever said that to me, but then I love SC & wouldn’t consider living anywhere else.
@GenXfrom753 жыл бұрын
Summerville? We live on the Charleston County side. Technically, Ladson. But my kids went to school in Dorchester County for a long time. The county lines are strange here! When we lived in Lakes of Summerville, our street was Charleston county, the back of the neighborhood is Berkeley and the front couple of streets are Dorchester. Had to call 911 once, and they argued over which county should respond...
@koori30853 жыл бұрын
Well bless your heart! 😅 Outside Chas. you might not want to ask for a sommelier, the proprietor might not know what he or she is/does... Unless you get up to Columbia or Aiken, there's some beautiful horse country. Glad you have found us to your liking.
@marybecker68813 жыл бұрын
Joshua Swindell Finally, someone says Bless your heart to me! Thank you, I think. You’d be surprised at our town 30 minutes from Chas, one of the wine bars is owned by a Sommelier, from France no less. Aiken is absolutely beautiful, although I don’t play polo. I’ve definitely found SC to my liking.

I lived in South Carolina for many years and this video is very accurate! I went to college in Myrtle Beach and t's very run-down, especially the closer you get to the beach and it's also full of people from the northeast, especially New Jersey, need I say more. Charleston is very historic and very hipster, much like Savannah. Hilton Head is by far the "nicest" area as far as low-crime and uppity beach communities but the vacation destination of native South Carolinians is Folly Beach, Edisto Beach, etc. as they are not nearly as crowded and built up. It's a state in transition. The state has so many transplants nowadays, especially in areas like Greenville, Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Columbia, and Hilton Head. Fantastic state overall with great culture, great food, fairly low cost of living, and beautiful sights!
@HafooluApps3 жыл бұрын
I go to Hilton Head Island yearly (I live in the Sumter and Manning area) and I can say it’s a nice area, but you can just deal the liberalism there, which is one of the few things I dislike. Such as signs being hidden and not lit to “save the turtles”

For years folks have been fleeing rural communities for big cities due to more work opportunities or for prestigious universities. Being born and raised in one of those cities we never rejected these people. We welcomed them in and allowed them to be who they are and use our resources. It’s disappointing to see so many negative comments not wanting us in your community? Double standard.

@@naftolipickard3785 Southern accents are common anywhere in South Carolina that isn't Charleston or Hilton Head. Charleston, once the "Most Southern" city is America, has been a lightning rod for migration, particularly from up north. In Greenville and Spartanburg you'll run across fewer native speakers than in Easley or Pickens, but they're still pretty common. Authentic Southern accents vary from area to area. There were 38 demographic groups in the state, before recent immigration increases. McMaster's accent is common in the Midlands. Strom Thurmond's had an Edgefield accent. The Upstate accent was influenced by Scotch-Irish settlement from PA and VA, and is an almost stereotypical hillbilly accent. There are several distinct accents along the coast.

I was born in South Carolina and spent my first 28 years, left for work reasons. It's got plenty of flaws and some ugly history, but it's also beautiful and interesting culture. I do get homesick, but returning isn't in the cards beyond visiting family for the foreseeable future. Two thoughts, with that in mind: "Bless your heart" is not expressly an insult, but an expression of sympathy. Whether it is an insult is based entirely on what the sympathy is being expressed for and whether you actually would want such sympathy. Aside from the obvious problems with Confederate worship in SC, it also obscures just how much important Revolutionary War history, particularly battle sites, can be found all over the state that is worth checking out if you're a history buff. The Mel Gibson movie "The Patriot" did a bad job of explaining that history, though-- so if you're ever in Camden (which has great Revolutionary War history sites), save yourself the awkward moment of asking where the British rounded up Americans and burned them to death in the church. That definitely didn't happen.

I currently live in Charleston but was born and went to elementary school in Georgetown. I spent every summer on Pawley's Island and each birthday at my grandparent's home less than a mile walk to the shore in Cherry Grove, N. Myrtle Beach. There are some amazingly beautiful places in this state. My next area will be the upstate, near Greenville. It's the only region of SC I am not familiar with yet. :)

Hahaha I love seeing u drive through my area of Townvillle, SC! Boiled peanut sound so strange but they are delicious! I've been here 23 years but fixin to move away because of over population and the concrete creeping in. They are cutting down all the trees to build the place up and making it look more like the big cities that they left behind.

I live in Lugoff SC.. I've seen a few trailers back in the woods, but no trailer parks.. I've been all over SC and never noticed any trailer parks. It's beautiful here and no you can not smoke in any restaurants that I know of. It's very very hot and humid in the summer which most of the time starts in April and ends in mid October. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

I lived almost a year in SC, hung out there a couple of years. I lived in Anderson! Never visited Clemson. Spartanburg has BMW. I visited once. Greenville was a fine place to discover. SC like anywhere else- what you make of it. Fooseball not my thing. I don't golf either. Indeed great churches in SC. Been to Edisto Beach (a hidden treasure) and Myrtle Beach. I spent a weekend in Charleston. Yeah, you can make fun of it- but, really, why?

South Carolina is boring geographically, but rich in history. Nick, you mentioned the importance of fraternities and sororities. I’m a Pike. Pi Kappa Alpha. We were founded at UVA in 1868, three years after the original Virginia Triad. What does this have to do with South Carolina? Nothing. But I’ve spent a lot of time in SC. If you go to Charleston, buy a hand woven basket from a local at the central market. They’re made exactly as they were 200 years ago by descendants of the slaves that made them. They cost upwards of $300 for a simple one, but they last over 200 years if you take care of them. Reward these women for their efforts and enjoy your work of art.

While I’m not a resident or native of the Palmetto state, I will say I’ve been through a handful of times on I-95, those times I was visiting either Georgia or Florida. Also Mr.Johnson if you live in South Carolina where would you live and why, and comparing both North and South Carolina would be a neat video:), I’m sure residents of both state would be neck and neck😆. This video is pretty accurate. You left off Georgetown, an old coastal town south of Murrels Inlet on Hwy 17 and Little River near the NC state line. There is a casino boat there that goes off shore for legal gambling, they have a good buffet too. The BMW plant/museum is near Greenville/Spartanburg area.
