So, my Charnwood W811 lathe finally needed replacing. Making projects on it started taking a lot longer as the motor was struggling, so I decided that now was the time for an upgrade.
I purchased the Record Power Coronet Herald Lathe from DM Tools (www.dm-tools.c...) and decided to make a video of myself unboxing it for the first time, setting it up and having my first go on it.
This is my first unboxing video and I have learned a lot in the process, but please leave me a comment down below if you want to give me feedback or have any questions on my experience.
As a quick first project, I made a small Ash Change Bowl from a 5x2" blank.
Products used:
‪@ChestnutProducts‬ (chestnutproduc...) Cellulose sanding sealer and Microcrystalline wax
Yorkshire grit (yorkshire-grit...) Original
I have the Rutlands 3" Xact Precision Woodturning Chuck (now Precision 75) with a 1"x8tpi thread, so this is used with an adaptor purchased from Rutlands (www.rutlands.com/)
Thank you to ‪@jpwoodwork‬, ‪@WaynetheWoodturner‬ and ‪@MapleTreeStudios‬ for their advice.

Thank you so much Frank. It definitely is a lot of fun and already feels so much easier to use compared to my old lathe. I think that the only thing with mounting it to a workbench is that there is more vibration with unbalanced pieces as there is less absorption of the vibrations, but it definitely does help from a space perspective and I can put tools and stuff underneath the lathe as I'm working so that they are close to hand. Thank you for the sub, watching and commenting...greatly appreciate it

Thank you for watching and commenting. Enjoy your lathe, it definitely is a great piece of machinery. My thoughts were that it is the brushes, though some have said it could be the capacitor. Although fixable, it was always in my head that I would think about upgrading when the old lathe needed repair as I needed something with more torque. Will fix up the motor some point though and make use of it somehow.

Hello and thank you for your video. I am just about to order the same lathe after much research…..my last one was a brand spanking new Record Coronet No 1 that I bought in 1974 when I was 18….still going fine at nearly 50…..unlike myself whose more knackered than the lathe! However having retired from being a nurseryman and growing trees for half a century I’m going to concentrate on turning some of the wood I’ve collected over the decades…..at least that which isn’t woodwormed to hell…..😂 Anyway, I don’t do many KZbin videos on the Plantsmans corner channel these days, but when I next update it I will recommend your videos…..you have a nice everyman enthusiasm and come across really well. Good luck in all your turning and ventures Jiggsy…….Best wishes….Malcolm Hockham❤

Thank you so much for your lovely comment. It really made me smile. Wow, that is a good testament to that lathe. I really like the Herald as it is small, but packs a fair punch. Enjoy it when you get yours! Worm eaten wood could make for a very characteristic piece. Bet you have some really nice pieces of wood seasoned that will make for some excellent turnings. Thank you again for your kind words.

This is my first time watching a video of yours. For over a year I've been looking at this lathe on and off. I see they're on sale again right now. Trying to justify buying it over other tools that I could really use for work and that would actually make me money. It's been almost 40 years since I've used a lathe. What are your thoughts after using it for a year now? And what lead you to buy this one?
@JiggsysShed
@JiggsysShed Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. I am loving this lathe as it has significantly stepped up what I was able to achieve on a lathe. I had a friend who had one so he could advise about it. Also, other makers in the community recommended it to me. The lathe fits well into a small workshop and despite being a smaller lathe, the way it is engineered allows ir to compete with bigger and more expensive lathes. The other reasons for purchasing it were the variable speed and the swivelling head stock (not necessarily found on other lathes at a similar price). Both of these functions allows for a lot more ease in turning. Although I've not done it yet myself, I would definitely recommend hitting a bigger tool rest or a curved one to reach into deeper bowls better. I hope this helps, but if there is anything else you want to know, just let me know
@t.e.1189
@t.e.1189 Жыл бұрын
Cool, Thanks. Do you have any other recommendations as far as accessories in addition to the bigger tool rest a newbie should consider? Or which turning chisels/gouges should one get? Which brands are the best?@@JiggsysShed
@JiggsysShed
@JiggsysShed Жыл бұрын
@t.e.1189 the accessories I have purchased as extras were a bigger chuck than what I had. I went for the 100mm from Rutland Tools as it came as a set with a number of adaptations. There is a video up in regards to unboxing that. Though my other choice would be the Record Power or Axminster chucks. I also purchased a Jacobs chuck insert which allows me to drill a center hole and has made hollowing simpler at times. Gouges wise, I can only really recommend what I have used. There are a variety of good brands out there, but I do like the Robert Sorby tools in regards to traditional gouges. Simon Hope does a really nice carbide pro hollower. If you are looking to use carbide tools, I would recommend Easy Wood Tools, they are not cheap, but you do not need many of them to achieve good turnings. I have had a go with them before and they do cut the wood really well. @JPwoodwork uses these all the time and would be able to advise you more on these if interested. If using traditional gouges, make sure you have a good sharpening system. I use the Robert Sorby ProEdge as it makes sharpening a lot quicker and easier for me, but there are other options available. Traditional gouge wise, you do not need to start with many from the offset as you can often achieve a fair amount with even just the beginner sets on offer (Robert Sorby does a set). Currently with the swiveling head stock I can only turn it to a 45 degree angle as having other at 90degrees I will need the outrigger. If you are able, I would definitely recommend having the legs with the lathe to have it free standing. Having it mounted on the bench does mean I have to run out of balance pieces at a very low speed as it will otherwise shake the whole workshop.

Hello John, Congrats on your new lathe. I see that it has a strong and solid structure. It's also great that it's adjustable. It will perform well in use. As far as I have heard, those who start lathe work always continue to change lathes with a higher model. But your old lathe's engine seems to have a problem. This beautiful lathe is awesome. I just watched a nice new design on the new machine. Keep up the great work with it. Thank you for the introduction and detailed information. See you. all the best.

Thank you Mehmet, really appreciate you watching. Yeah, I was definitely in need of an upgrade and this lathe should keep me going for a long time. The weight of it will make it a lot more stable as well. There is so many other lathes that can be upgraded too later, but space will become an issue.

I've heard only good things about Coronet series lathes. They say Herald is not 1hp, but closer to 1.2-1.3. And it has all the bells and whistles one may want. I've heard you may want to aquire center to center male mt2 rod. It has a name I don't recall, but it helps lining up the headstock to tailstock dead on
@JiggsysShed
@JiggsysShed 3 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching and commenting. Yeah the coronet series has definitely stepped up the game and the power for a small motor is great as they have managed to step up it's power output, so it does rival bigger machines well. The swivelling headstock and variable speed is definitely a big plus for me. Yeah, not sure of the exact name, but I know what you mean. Think I just call it a tailstock alignment tool. I haven't yet felt the need to get one, but I know it's available from Axminster Tools in the UK.

@JiggsysShed
@JiggsysShed 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Roy. Yeah definitely needed it. If you can go for the herald, it is a great machine and the swiveling headstock is handy. You also have the reverse function. The only time you would need to have the full clearance behind is if you are going to do a big piece with the headstock swung to 90 degrees, for which you need 47cm from wall to front of bench feet. For a 45degree swing, you would need 45cm. For a 22.5 degree swing, which helps with the hollowing, you need 41cm. It's 88cm of workbench required for the feet, then allow 25cm for the motor and 10cm for the tool rest, longer if you intend to add the extension. These are only the bare minimum and I would definitely recommend you work bench being longer than 88cm to allow enough spacing for the bolts. The adaptor does put it further from the headstock and for small piece this is fine, but for bigger you want a chuck that fits directly onto the lathe thread. Rutland chucks can be purchased at the correct thread size and it is always great to have a spare. The adaptor was fairly reasonable in cost as well from Rutlands. The chuck that I have is the 3" Xact prescion, which is now the Precision 75, so slightly smaller than yours. Hope that answers your questions.

Hi Jiggsy. I got one 3 weeks ago and I’m very pleased with it. I couldn’t help noticing that the power lead on yours hangs down and swings in the air. It did the same on mine. I contacted Record Power and to my surprise, they didn’t want to know, they just said they always been made like that. Which in my opinion, doesn’t make it right. I think most electrical engineers would consider it to be a safety issue. I thought about attaching it to something, perhaps the bed, but that would prevent the head being slid down it. So I rewired mine with a suitable length lead going to the filter. I didn’t use the bed-leg connecting plate. After measuring I decide it would make the spindle to high, when mounted to my bench. Instead I drilled, I think it was 10, 10mm holes in the bench and used 10mm bolts to secure the bed to the bench, believe me it ain’t going anywhere😀 Happy turning, cheers Noel.

Awesome, glad you're enjoying yours. I am still really impressed with the lathe overall and enjoying it. Definitely was the best decision to upgrade to it. Yeah, that power lead did confuse me initially as well and I did think if there was an option with it, but as you say, short of rewiring it, I just decided to leave it as is for now. I just make sure that there are no other forces pulling on it. Without the benchfeet mine would have been lower than I'd have needed it, but they also give the opportunity for me to place items underneath the lathe while I'm working. Enjoy your lathe and happy turnings!

@Jestey6 11 ай бұрын
@@JiggsysShed The space underneath is a good point, it would make removing the chips underneath much easier. I suspect my bench is a bit higher than yours and the connecting plates would have made the spindle too high. Great purchase John, I'm certain you will get many years of great turning with this lathe., stay safe, John. If you decide to purchase a Nova or Record Power chuch I have a 33x3.5 unused adapter suitable for these which I am happy to send you. You can email me.

Thank you John. Am looking forward to getting time to use the new lathe and learn more with it. When I get to buy a new chuck, it will be one that is direct threaded so that I won't need to use an adaptor. Thank you for the offer though and will bear it in mind should I be in need. Thank you again for watching and commenting.

Thank you Japie. I was initially in 2 minds about just trying to fix the old lathe, but it had a number of other frustrations, which pushed me to getting a new one instead. Hope you can get your motor sorted. Thank you again for watching and commenting.

@@JiggsysShed i know how you feel about the old one as my first lathe was similar just branded differently. Because the bed is just square tubing for one, it makes a hell of a noice when turning and they arent really structural strong. On my old lathe i couldnt use a chuck as the whole spindle and threads were smaller and having an adapter made would have costed me a grand.
@JiggsysShed

@@PotgieterWoodturning yeah, mine would flex when I put something between spindles and I could never take something off and have it perfectly centre when I flip it round. Wow, that's a lot for an adaptor. My chuck set came with an adaptor to fit the spindle thread of the old lathe which was handy. The new lathe definitely runs a lot quieter and the weight just gives it so much more stability.

@@JiggsysShed yes, like you say, turning stuff around you always had to true it up again. Yes, it flexes a lot. Glad you are enjoying the new lathe mate 😁👍🏼
