2 Fantastic buys in as new condition. And being a bit older have a fully articulated rear pony trail, unlike newer models.

City of Nottingham was my first Hornby locomotive that still holds a special place in my heart, I still have it as part of the 1991 Night Mail Express trainset that also included elevated track supports as well as the operating mail coach, wonderful set even if she is tender driven. Sam, the slope on smoke box top was made that way to accommodate the streamlined casing. Later after casing was removed, at major overhauls many were refitted with a conventional smoke box. Ha ha, a shout out would be fun.

A couple of corkers there Sam Spot on with the slope on the smoke box. It is a throw back to the days of streamlining, the slope was so the smoke box would fit under the casing at the front end. When the streamlining was removed in the late 1940's the smoke boxes were originally left as fitted with the sloping top, but as they passed through Crewe works in the 1950's for their regular heavy overhauls the sloping boxes were replaced with with the more conventional flat topped boxes. I think the last sloping box loco was 46246 City of Manchester which didnt get its normal smoke box til March 1960. Then when 46229 Duchess of Hamilton was re-streamlined by the NRM in 2008-2009 she has a new sloping smoke built for her, so there is a sloped boxed Dutchess around, but the box is hidden by the casing. As for single chimneys, the first 14 all had single chimneys when first built, but 6234 Duchess of Abercorn was built with a double one in 1939, and it showed better performance than the first built batch, so all later ones were built with doubles and the first 14 converted to doubles between 1939 and 1944. Favourite? can't choose, the BR Crimson with weathering looks magnificent, but there is something very characterful about Rutlands sloping smoke box, so honours even on that front. Odd one out? Did I see a B1 interloper from the Eastern region parked up by the turntable? Have a great w/e, Jon
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын

I have the Princess Elizabeth in BR Green from the same era of manufacture, and find it so good I have bought two more Princess Royals from the same era. The rear trucks also rotate, but seem to have a smaller gap with the body than the Coronations. I find the detailing on these perfectly adequate, and the motor one of the best. I also have the later Hornby 'City of Liverpool' which also satisfies my wants. I'm not sure that I will succumb to any of the new models, gorgeous as they are. My two 'new' Princesses (R3015 Princess Royal Class BR 4-6-2 Princess Arthur Of Connaught 46207 and R2448 'LADY PATRICIA' BR BLUE WEATHERED 4-6-2 LOCO 46210) are as new and cost me a total of £195. I got tempted to buy these after revisiting an old video by Intercity1980. I do miss his reviews, and wish he would return. ps. please change those awful vacuum pipes.
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment William, Ahh of course - yes those princesses are just as good! I think that's the problem - the detail on these was already adequate (save maybe the cab detail and cylinder cocks etc), and the performance just can't be beaten! Have you ever done any artificial weathering, or do you know of a tutorial I could use? I have an old HO Rivarossi UP Big Boy #4005 and it's a bit imperfect (missing pilot deck handrails, dimming light bulb, that's about it), but once I get her back in shape I'd love to add some weathering to her. It's at least 40 years old, as the smokebox is flat black like the rest of the engine, the newer ones are silver-colored (or steel, again I am new to this). She still runs great, but I think I'd keep her as primarily a decoration for the layout I plan on building with my dad. Maybe I'll get an MTH #4014 to run alongside her, as that's the one that currently being restored.

It's been answered but the Coronation locos that had the sloped firebox at the top would have been streamlined locomotives originally. When the streamlining casing was removed, the slope was quite obvious. Also, an originally streamlined locos had a distinctive difference in the running board under the boiler though above the wheels towards the front bogie. The streamlined locos would have a clear break in the boiler running plate and that over the front bogie, a very clear 'step' in the running board. The easiest way to distinguish is to check a non-streamlined loco where the running board was one complete entity but sloped in a curve to the horizontal over the front buffers. The curved running board shows that it was never streamlined. That 'curve' is missing on the locos that were originally streamlined: the running boards were two horizontals. In fact it's very apparent in your two locomotives. However, as the locos aged and were repaired/maintained, the sloping firebox was replaced with a normal firebox.
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much - yes I had guessed that this was the case! It's quite nice that Hornby picked up on this and represented it with their models - they obviously did their research! Thanks again for all the info, Cheers, Sam :)
@lukasruediger29107 жыл бұрын
Nice! The duchesses are nice locos. The new tooling by Hornby seems to sort out a few of the issues there were with the old tooling - for example that gaping gap between the body and the trailing truck axle. The cheapest I've found it for is £150 which seems to me a decent price for a new tooling, large express loco. However I do admit I would be more likely to buy the older one, seeing as it's probably going to see a large price reduction now the new one is out.
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lukas! Yeah I noticed that... but in doing so they've made the model very unrealistic - those trucks were supposed to be articulated, not fixed! Hmm yeah £150 is okay, but I believe the bodywork is still plastic, so I'm still struggling to see how that could be justified! Thanks for watching mate, Sam :)

Especially the pricing e.g. by Märklin, Trix, Fleischmann, and Roco in Germany. Unacceptable by people with a normal income. They have a pricing so as the pharmacies for high cost medications, hehe. And their locos will be produced in VR China so as the locos of Hornby. But Hornby has a more acceptable pricing at several times. Similar to Piko in Germany.

There is a US manufacturer which produces three lines of models, one is standard with mostly molded parts, one is premium with many hand applied details, and one is museum quality with so many details only collectors wish to buy them, up to $800 for a museum quality loco, well worth £600... I don't think I ever gonna buy a factory weathered loco. The dirt (spread) is not realistic, they often only use one color (the mud-ish brown), and on a working loco there are specific parts that regularly cleaned (windows, the rods...), and parts that hardly gets dirty at all (buffers use to be greasy, not dusty...). But sometines I do buy pro-weathered trains, or I do it my self.
@TomPrickVixen7 жыл бұрын
In Central Europe that price (190 GBP) is average for a new tender loco, most mid-range models like Roco, and Fleischmann steamers goes for that. The most expensive train I ever brought was a train set, for 375 euro (335 GBP), and for a single loco 230 euro (205 GBP), with pre-order (that's almost 20% off).

maybe the new coronation is brass that would account for the price. also in the last review you asked about a 1p, well the alx terrier was classed 0P, ether it was weak or overpowered

It's possible, and that would be some justification - but I'm told that they are in fact plastic, which is dreadful. I could be wrong though, because I've not seen one myself! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Sam this may be a old vid but a new comment I wanted to tell when they de streamlined it had the sloping smoke box because the streamlining was curved at the front as u know and de streamlined versions were under it so for the curve they had to slop it a little

Yeah you're absolutely right - so cool that the model portrayed this too! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Once again, this is a beautiful model Sam! I wanted to tell you my latest research discovery! An attempt was made to preserve a 4th example but sadly it failed! :( That example was No. 46243 City of Lancaster! Still, its good to have 3 preserved examples!

200 pounds is a lot of money, here in Europe we get premium collector locomotives for that kind of money. I must admit that the prices here in EU are a bit higher when it comes to locomotives because they get more digital and sound gibberish and gimmicks (I am pretty sure I wrote that wrong). As for the story behind the loco, I have a set of 3 coaches which was a limited edition Marklin thing back in 2008 when I was just abou 11 to 12 years old and of course I didn't got them at that time. I eventually found them last year from a collector who has died and his collection was up for sale (only premium or limited stuff so that guy had an eye for this kind of stuff) and took them. What I am about to say it's a bit sensible: My sister is a medium and she told me that if I take good care of the item of a dead person ''he will have a better at peace sleep''. Now I don' t know but I took good care of my coaches. :)) I do have a question that haunts me for mounths now. Why don't you and other british collectors use the short couplers? The trains would look lovely with no space between the coaches as in real life. I would recommand you watch ''The reassammbler - Hornby Christmass train'' (or something like that) with James May putting an entire set back togheter piece by piece so you see what it meant back in the 50's in terms of old locomotives and running smooth. I have a loco since I was 12 and it runs today as a bliss, no sound, extremely smooth you won't believe it. Nice review as always, great locos and great railway! Cheers

I know! It's an awful lot considering it's just DC and doesn't even come with a decoder! It's lovely to hear that you took good care of those anyway! haha I don't know why we do - I suppose it's tradition and compatibility really, dating back to the tri-ang days! These days though, you can choose to run any coupling you like! Thanks again for the comment, Sam :)

Hi Sam liked the review on the City of Nottingham nice seeing it on your layout. I was looking at the Wrenn one on ebay it was in the BR Black with red lining so tempted to buy it the price held me back at £750 ;( Hope you right about the New Hornby one do hope it will be die cast then I may get one. Must admit the Wrenn one was a rare model.!! Also just seen a Hornby dublo 3 rail model in black. Would also like to point out the earlier Hornby City of Nottingham which is tender driven the linkage on that model looks so much stronger less likely to jam up.
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Michael! Blimey - yeah that's a lot even for a Wrenn one! They are great - but not worth £750 in any livery - they're all just as nice really! That's definitely true though - the old versions were much more sturdy! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Have you tried inserting the locos and tenders with a plastic bag in place so you can just lift the plastic to get them out. Roco/Fleischmann do this and it saves breaking things!

Thanks Paul! Yeah Hornby do that these days too with their Styrofoam packaging, and it does work very well! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Have you ever done a review of the Lady Godiva? And Idk, for some reason I REALLY don't like weathering on a locomotive. I really love seeing what a locomotive looks like when it was brand new. Some like it, I don't really. Even if they were really that dirty irl. An example I like to use are the 8500 Gas Turbines. FILTHY things irl, but I never like seeing them dirty in model form. Other than that, streamlined or unstreamlined the Coronation is such a lovely looking locomotive.
