The best of this edition is how portable, sturdy and well made it is and that it’s always discounted on Amazon. Also, the box is surprisingly sturdy.

This is the best box set of in all Tolkiens legendarium. Alan Lee is the definitive Tolkien artist, as much as I adore Howe and Nasmiths work as well. The paper, binding and overall quality is second to none.

In my opinion, this is the second best edition of Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The first is the Folio Society but they're ridiculously expensive. This set is (relatively) within reason for a higher quality edition, though not inexpensive by any means. There are other good deluxe editions, but I still think these Alan Lee illustrated hardback editions are the best for the price. 😊

I recently bought the "Illustrated by the Author" regular editions of The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and Lord of The Rings. I don't think that I'll ever need any other editions ever. I also brought the physical CD editions of The Hobbit and Lord of The Rings read by Andy Serkis so I can read along. Reading along with someone who is reading out loud is really fun.

Got lucky with the condition, this boxset tends to get damaged during shipping. Box tends to get ripped/bent in amazon packaging

I snatched my copy on special for half price(literally just over an hour between new listing and before it sold out) so chose the 1 day shipping for only $4 extra. Came in immaculate condition considering Amazon completely skimped on any packing material whatsoever, would have been anxious having it thrown around for regular several day shipping.

I saw a video recently where someone unboxed the Hobbit (not from the box set but the exact same book) and it had the same damage on the same page! Gonna have to check mine later

I see for the first time these editions to be printed in Italy. What I saw before was Bosnia and Herzegovina or just Europe.

Actually, I think there are more different 'deluxe' (some more so than others, obviously) Tolkien editions out there than I've seen for any other author! Especially different editions of the same book (since there are so few 'main' published Tolkien works).

I just bought this, and now I'm kind of worried. EDIT: I must have gotten lucky. Mine arrived, I thumbed through all 4 books, and I saw no damage, or anything worrisome. Some of the corners were a bit squished on the box, but it isn't noticeable unless you're really looking.

My heart sank when I saw that damage. I would be sending them back. It is not acceptable. I myself am at a loss which editions to buy. Every single set for years now has had major problems.
