The airless also looks lighter weight. So if they had the same drag coefficient (pretend), the same drag force, a lighter weight ball is more affected by that force. I think they are trying to reduce both the drag and the weight, but haven't tuned it right.

I would imagine that this basketball is KIND of like the airless tire, like they always show the tire where you can see through it, but in reality when they actually release the tire i think they would be covering the sidewalls with rubber, meaning you can only see the inside of the airless tire for the demonstration purposes, so for the basketball I would imagine that this is kind of that same thing, release it to a few people who want to buy it so that people can actually see what it is, then release the actual one with some kind of leather skin or something so it doesn't have all the whole visible

@@Arcella1981 Especially since, covering it with a thin non-structural skin would be a fairly simple solution to start dealing with the drag difference. It also doesn't have that much to do with the major technical difficulty which was creating the complicated structure in appropriate materials for this concept to work. (also part of the reason why many of the people trying to 3d print this ball fail, it required quite specific materials and printing methods)

This definitely makes sense as a collector's item. High price, low volume, selling to people who want to have a small piece of history so to speak. Wilson probably doesn't need to sell very many of these in the grand scheme to make enough money to recoup development costs so they can continue to comfortably develop gen 2 and so on. Future generations will likely get cheaper as the production process gets more refined and the product gets closer to being usable as a drop-in replacement for an air-filled basketball.

I agree with you. If they were able to have some sort of leather/faux leather mesh covering the ball, that would definitely help with the air resistance and grip. Hopefully they’re already working on implementing something like that because if they’ve already tried and can’t get that to work then this just stays a collector’s item. At first I thought momentum would be the reason why he kept shooting short due to less weight, but apparently the Airless is very close in weight to the regular. So yeah, while he said air resistance, I'd say he's close to the answer, it'd be turbulance that's causing a lot more drag on the ball flying through the air. All those holes will be creating some mad random turbulance patterns.

The most jarring part without handling one is the sound. So very different. Of course the look and design are fascinating. Yet again without handling one it’s hard to imagine. As many others in comments have stated, I would think all the holes would create drag. You expressed how you felt the need to push the shots harder from 3. Seems like a flaw in engineering. Yet I suppose it would very much change the game if it were adopted as regulation. Thanks for putting so much effort into a review of something I’ll likely only see on video. As you said it’s unlikely to be used in a random game and I don’t have that kind of scratch. Cheers!

Airflow is a factor when shooting with the ball, but it’s not as big as you’d think. It’s more so the actual weight of the ball compared to the regular basket ball. A regular basket ball has more weight to it which allows it to go farther with similar force as you would with the airless. It’s the same reason why a paper plane with the front two corners folded then the wings doesn’t fly, but the moment you fold those corners one more time and make it heavier in the front, it flies.

I mean, you don’t have to worry about inflation and deflation, nor do you have to worry about popping the ball, so it’s more durable, plus the 3D printed material should be more eco-friendly than whatever material they’re using for the actual ball (maybe). It’s more a matter of convenience. You store the ball away, you come back to it after 20 years, and it still works like new without requiring air

@@mrsoisauce9017 These are not durable. That was a big issue with the prototypes; they kept breaking. That’s a natural side effect of composite melted materials produced by 3d printing. 3D printing is also not eco-friendly lol. Microplastics aside, the filament manufacturing process isn’t great, then printing itself releases significant harmful emissions. Plastics also get brittle over time, so that ball ain’t bouncing the same 20 years later.
@mrsoisauce9017
@mrsoisauce9017 Ай бұрын
@@iRunfastXC This isn’t exactly a plastic tho. I have to assume it’s a material that’s similar to TPU; it’s more rubbery and bouncy. I believe it’s more durable than standard filament as well. What ever that material is, make a layer 1/20th the depth of those holes to cover it. That is what I want to see Wilson. Yes the bounce will be affected altering the structure, but surely ratio matters a lot. If you have a thin layer the resistance to morphing will be low enough to allow proper compression and uncompression.

As a tennis player I’d be interested in trying out airless tennis balls if Wilson were ever to make them.

It would be interesting to set up a little launcher like a trebuchet and compare the differences between balls in distance traveled at varying speeds.

Pretty sure that there isn't more resistance, just LESS lift. Backspin plays a crucial role in generating lift on a basketball and even a change to the surface texture can affect the amount of lift. A porous ball will never create as much lift as a continuous solid surface, which is why we don't see planes with holes in them to 😁

Seems like they could create a consistent structure across the entire surface to improve feel and air resistance. The see through seems to be aesthetic. Seems like you’re kinda saying that as I type 😂

If this is hollow with no air then make tennis balls solid with no air, golf balls hallow but filled with water. Fill the football up with concrete mix ect...

Looks like the Airless would work better as an indoor training tool for dribbling like if you are in an apartment building.

What if it's not completely airless? What if it has a molecular or atomic layer of any of the gases just behind those holes to provide that resistance or the bounce that it is getting

This is dope. The way they got it to mimic the behavior of the traditional ball, but be made using modern techniques. At the same time, mfers actually managed to engineer a basketball that needed to be patched in order to work properly. He's talking about it like it has a version number and everything. What a time to be alive.

If it's really catching air drag, then I wonder if blowing a balloon up inside it, would help cut some of the drag... If not, adding a thin outer skin, could possibly help. Obviously, a thin outer skin would wear fast, and it wouldn't be good for outdoor courts. It would help with figuring out if it's real the air drag that's making it shoot different.

Shooting the ball with no spin, would there be less resistance vs. spinning with air going through it and around it..

Would’ve been great to have a guest shooter with you. Like a “name” ball player… Nice form tho, good episode.
