It’s even worse than that in my opinion. Many make enough money that they actually *could* take care of the whole family or most of it….but they can’t afford to fly the whole family around first class buying hotels and the food. They could get each household a Honda…but not $125K Mercedeses. Buy them all regular houses they’d never have to pay for…not upgrade everyone to McMansions that can’t afford the taxes on. Can do a lot with some modesty and sense.

I have read the majority of lottery winners go broke too. If you’re born into wealth, you see from example how to handle it. The typical person, if they receive a windfall (like a pro sports contract or a lottery win) do not know how to handle it. To make matters worse, we do not teach financial literacy in our schools, so people make terrible decisions all the time.

Young players need to learn from Ocho on how to save their money. My favorite stories from Ocho is how he never bought real jewelry, the earrings he wore when he played were from Claire's. Ocho also lived at the facility because they had food, showers, a comfy couch, and a gym which was all he needed. He stayed there until Marvin Lewis told him he had to go home.

This what the NFL needs to do. 1. Make rookies deposit 85% of the first 2yrs of their rookie contract into a trust. They will get all of the money out of the trust the beginning of the 3rd year of their rookie contract. 2. Make players take one 4 hour financial class right after they're drafted and a 1 hour financial class every week during the season.
