I'm agreeing with Ocho on that argument. First, the kicker has to practice to get the technique down. When the ball hops up, now you look at the stats for bobbling due to nervous anxiety. Your team knows somebody has to be right there when that ball is bobbled and recover that. There is a good statistical chance of recovery in that situation. Unc says just air it out for a 20+ yard jump ball. You have to run a very creative route and fake out somebody to get open. Good luck with that. Ocho knows what he's talking about.

Regarding the onside kick: Yes, of course, Shannon is correct that it's far easier to convert 4th and 20 than recover an onside kick. But he's absolutely wrong to compare *any* play in a game that gains more than 20 yards to a 4th and 20 situation to retain control of the ball. 20 yard gains occur on first down when defenses are caught cheating forward and not expecting long bomb plays on 1st and 2nd down. 4th and 20 situations dictate a particular kind of defense that is going to reduce the likelihood of conversion considerably. But... still, you'll see teams retain control FAR more often compared to the present onside kick rules.

Or that a 1st down 20 yrd pickup is similarly difficult to 4th down. Any team can incidentally pick up 20 on a blown coverage, but your scheme is not the same on 1st as on 4th. On first down and 20, you are defending small gains too. On 4th and 20 you are just keeping the play in front of you

Chad didnt answer it right but to answer the question, the difference betqeen 1st-3rd and 20 and 4th is the defense will only defend 20 yards down field as opposed to the other 3 downs where they have to defend from the line of scrimmage. On 4th and 20 you can back everyone up because the defense knows you cant check down or run.

On ist down through 3rd down, they have to defend from the line of scrimmage. Its much harder to complete a 20 yard play on 4th when you dont have another down, as opposed to 1st through 3rd when the defense has to account for the yardage underneath.

I knew exactly what Ocho was saying. The difference between 1st & 20 and 4th & 20 is more downs (considering that on 1st & 20 you’d have 2 more downs to convert), play calling AND PRESSURE. If it’s 1st & 20 the OC can call a run OR a short, medium or long pass and make it difficult for the defense. On 4th & 20 the defense knows without a doubt you’re passing because you’re only getting one opportunity which would make that more difficult for the offense. It’s definitely a HUGE DIFFERENCE.
