Shannon Sharpe & Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson react to Randy Moss' recent comments stating he's the greatest wide receiver of all-time over San Francisco 49ers legend Jerry Rice. Unc is firmly in Rice's corner, but Ocho is ready to die on the hill that nobody in history compares to Moss or Terrell Owens.

Jerry's tenacity and work ethic is what made him the best, but also playing with the best helps with that as well. Btw, Rich Gannon was already a 2x Pro Bowl QB and a 1st team All-Pro the year before Jerry joined the Raiders.

@@PurpleMonkeyDishwasher88so your argument is that rice achieved great numbers bc he played in great teams? What’s the excuse for when moss played on the patriots with Brady at qb? I mean, he had a great season but his numbers didn’t suddenly significantly improve that year, did they? (I’m just asking I didn’t look up the numbers yet)
@jtremaine23

@@PurpleMonkeyDishwasher88 You left this out of the context though...Rice was still 40 so whatever he could give you is a plus. You put any of those other guys at 40 with Gannon and they still don't have his numbers...especially after the ACL tear. Second, Rice even put up incredible numbers with his backup QBs. If you took his stats from the backups and we won't count Young when he was Montana's backup, he had 24 games with Grbac (9), Kemp (6), Bono (6), Moroski (2) and Cavanugh (1). In exactly a year and a half's worth of games, Rice caught 134 passes for 2,177 yards and 23 TDs, and ran for one score as well. That's an average season of 89 catches, 1451 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns, or roughly the career best season for nearly every WR who has ever played the game. He made Grbac look pretty good that KC paid him to be their starting QB. Third, Moss played on a 16-0 team with Brady but look at his postseason stats that year compared with Rice's 1st playoff game with Gannon. -Moss 4 Playoff Games w/ Brady (age 30) 25 Targets 12 Recs 142 Yards 1 TD -Rice 1st Playoff Game w/ Gannon (age 39) 11 Targets 9 Recs 183 Yards 1 TD Lastly, in 2004, Daunte Culpepper led the league in passing at 4,717 (110.9 QBR) but Moss only had 767 receiving yards. Nate Burleson had more yards. What happened?

There are some incredible talents who weren't able to rack up numbers for various reasons. People like Grant Hill, Barry Sanders, Bo Jackson, etc... So he isn't all the way wrong. Injuries, terrible teams, terrible draft organizations among other things also contribute to great players numbers and championships. Overall I agree with Unc, but Ocho ain't 100% wrong. There are lots of GREAT raw talent individuals that ended up in not so great situations. I probably would say Jerry Rice is the best too. Not to take anything away from him but it definitely doesn't hurt to play with Joe Montana and in that system and for that organization all of those years. But yes, he still deserves all the accolades that he gets because those numbers are ridiculous even given those great circumstances.

That was Jerry’s third season not the goat jerry people clamor about now.. and he used stickum game in and out after all the drops his rookie season. Not to mention how many touchdowns moss would’ve had if silly bobbles rules & instant replay weren’t enforced the way they were in 2007. how many touchdowns could be taken from jerry with the same rules today. Jerry rice played in a run dominated league where the west coast offense was jumping into the scene - “mossed” is famous based on the fact that defenses knew he was gonna get the ball… an were helpless in stopping him.

Also, I hate to break it to you but he didn't wear gloves when he had those 22 TDs (23 total) in 12 games and he had one of his best all around seasons the year before. You have to include both the good and bad with or without instant replay...how many TDs were not counted back then when there wasn't instant replay that should have counted?!? The West Coast offense was about efficiency with shorter passes and making something out of them which Rice was better at and why they came up with YAC. And ironically, he had more 50+ receiving TDs than Moss. Taylor also played in that same offense but here is the numbers comparison with Rice for the 9 years they played together (1987-1995). John Taylor: 347 rec, 5,598 yards, 43 rec TDs Jerry Rice: 807 rec, 12,626 yards, 128 rec TDs (7 rushing TDs, for good measure) As far as being "Mossed", when people used to shoot a basketball or something in the trash, they would say "Kobe" but everybody knows that he's not better than Jordan.

The number one trait that Rice had over every other WR was his work ethic. Nobody could outwork him! Steve Young told a story about how he was cleaning out his locker at 49ers HQ a few days after the '94 Super Bowl season. He said he remembered seeing Rice outside on the practice field running routes and catching passes from one of the trainers. Young said they just won the SB but Rice was acting like the season was still in progress. I watched all three WRs play from beginning to end and never saw Rice have alligator arms, dog it on his routes, or take plays off. Nobody can say that about Moss or Owens. Hell, Moss took off entire seasons (ask any Raiders fan)! He even did it in the SB! Owens repeatedly led the league in dropped passes. He also would have alligator arms and take plays off (just not as much as Moss). I remember seeing Owens drop multiple passes that should have been TDs! I haven't even mentioned the fact that both Moss and Owens were dumped by multiple teams because they had become locker room cancers. If Johnson wants to ignore stats, then fine...I just gave multiple reasons why Rice was still the GOAT! 🐐

@@Hypee559 Yes but that's why people are saying that Montana never threw for over 4,000 yards but Rice STILL got his numbers. Even rookie Cam Newton did that. I can name quite a few above average QBs that have done that. Montana had his most passing yards, highest completion %, most TDs, longest passing TD, highest QBR and won his only 2 MVPs with Rice (not before or after). Steve Young was horrible in Tampa Bay and throwing more INTs than TDs but that changed when he came to SF to play with Rice. He made him better. Also, John Taylor played with these same 2 QBs for 9 years but look at his numbers compared to #80 who was doubled/tripled more. John Taylor: 347 rec, 5,598 yards, 43 rec TDs Jerry Rice: 807 rec, 12,626 yards, 128 rec TDs (7 rushing TDs, for good measure) Interestingly, Rice has more 50+ receiving TDs than Moss who was faster. Rice had true "game" speed---same speed from start to finish and he was great with YAC. I think people focus on the deep threat of Moss and forget everything else like----route running, rushing, blocking, going over the middle, breaking tackles, work ethic, IQ, clutch-ness, durability, playoff performer, etc. As far as stickum, I would have agreed with you but the problem is this....with NO gloves, Rice had one of his best all around seasons in his 2nd year and 22 TDs (23 total) in 12 games in his 3rd year (better than Moss's 23 TDs in 16 games). @kenyatatribble342 not in todays NFL, defenses aren't so simple. Guys like LT, Ray Lewis, Troy, Reed changed how defenses play, it's about film study and being smart more than brute force now. Exclusively relying on one target isn't quite as easy as it used to be. This was an era where 50% of a QBs targets could be to 1 guy, do that today and you're gonna throw 6 picks a game. I hate GOAT debates cause of era and style of play etc changes but I'd pick Jerry if I had too I'm just talking about the reality of the sport

@@Jrock420blam I believe there are limitations to what you can do defensively. I agree that defense has changed. It had to because no one runs the I anymore or lines up under center. Offenses are designed now to spread the field and stretch the defense. However the same coverages are still being played. Cover 1,2 or 3 etc. Defenses have gotten more sophisticated in how they try to disguise what they are doing. With that said there are still ways to create one v one match ups on the outside by placing 3 or 4 receivers to one side of the formation and 1 opposite for example. Today you have teams throwing the ball 50-60 times a game almost like a game time skeleton drill. Lol. I believe Jerry would be just as successful if not more through his work ethic if he were to play in today's game! Hard to compare eras! I agree with you.

Exactly. It shouldn't matter how "skilled" or "athletic" someone is. In the end, it's about the production (numbers), because it is the most direct correlation to winning. It's like saying Kyrie Irving is greater than Magic Johnson because Kyrie is the most skilled ball handler in the history of the NBA. No, nobody cares how great Ky's ball handling is, if he can't even take his team to the playoffs alongside a generational talent like Luka Doncic. Like Unc said, it ain't even close. you dont understand how that offense worked. The west coast offense was considred a extension of the run game. Very similar to how most offenses run today. They believed in getting the ball into their playmakers hands quickly. It was all ball control. They didnt need a rb to just take handoffs. he also had to catch texas routes and swing passes. Thats why craig lead in total yds for years and was beat out only by E.D. Their avg/yds per catch was around 11 with their avg depth of target around 6. Also i went back and checked, They were top 10 in rushing every year but 3. Also a stat that stood out heavily was they were top 3 in avg yds per rush att. Because of how the west coast offense is set up, its very similar to modern spread concepts. It stretches the field horizontally meaning gaps would open up. Also they didnt have a HOF rb mainly because they used to HB's and a FB in the run game heavily. Its a massive misconeption that they didnt run. THey didnt have a bell cow like everyone else so it gets forgotten that they were devasting in the run game. Thats why PA worked so well for them. @@codyb.3015

No it wasnt but they still were top ten every year but 3 in total rushing and top 3 every year but 1 in avg/yd per carry during montanas years. They had three backs they used heavily along with screens and short routes. Their offense treated screens and short passes as if they were long distance handoffs. Fun fact, they never led the league in passing. But they had a top 10 offense every year. They were as well balanced as any team has ever been. They werent passing more also. What boosts their number heavily is rice's ability to run after the catch . Absurd numbers for the whole squad actually@@Wizznilliam

Randy moss might be the greatest gifted Great talent at the WR position , of all time , but the fact that Jerry played at the age of 40 and still had 1000+ yards in the year 2002! That’s valid , and after we saw what it took Tom to achieve what he did , I now believe Jerry Rice is the Goat , that’s crazy! And to do it in 2002! Which is a valid year , and competition at that time was 💯 in competitiveness, Jerry Rice is the Goat

All his years were valid. Remember in 1988 you could launch at a helmet and knock people the fuck out. You could grab and hold the entire field not just in 5 yards. And to top it qb’s didn’t throw 50 times a game and go for it on 4th all the time. They threw it like 25 times on a good day and just played field position. Jerry goated

I wouldn’t say he was the system since the system won 2 super bowls without him. But agreed. Ocho is trying to say they were better athletes. Freak athletes. Jerry was a human being. But he PERFECTED the craft of WR. Like cam newton vs Peyton manning. No question who was more “gifted” and athletic. But not even close who the better qb was. NFL isn’t only about being freak athletes. Skill and mental toughness matter. Jerry never was in trouble and never got kicked off of teams whereas TO and Moss’ careers were tarnished because their mental game was weak af. Like today, metcalf has some TO in him in sheer athleticism. But he’s weak minded. Won’t ever be a great even though he has the talent to be great.

The amount of downplay and disrespect to Jerry is unreal because people only see numbers and pretend he's nothing but stats. You can literally take away the stats and it's STILL in Jerry's favor. Even the eye test and skillset Jerry is still a better receiver. The only thing Moss has over Jerry is running deep and jump balls, and mfs pretend like Jerry was a bum at it. (Jerry still has the most 50+ TD record) Jerry is: Better with hands (reliably) Better playbook compatibility (Jerry can fit into any and every system in football without drop in production) Better route runner Better at reading defenses Better agility Better balance Better blocker (Jerry is literally the greatest blocking receiver ever) Better at short passes Better at screens Better at YAC Better ball security Better at taking hard hits Better longevity Better at playing across the middle Better in the clutch Better at handling pressure (playoffs) Better at handling superior competition (Jerry can route up Primetime, that's all you need to know) Better conditioning Better work ethic (NO ONE works harder than Jerry rice.) And last of all, Jerry will never give up during a game. There have and will be Receivers in the past and future that will be better than Jerry in some categories, but never will there be a receiver that surpasses Jerry in ALL categories. And that's not even including his ridiculous stats.
