My whole issue with this is that the male characters are never affected in a way where the men are made less attractive or less handsome when mocap is done on actors that exist in real life (examples being Cal Kestis from EA Star Wars and Daryl's actor from the Walking Dead in Death Stranding). But almost every female character made in the West are mocapped suddenly are altered and changed from how the actresses look irl and it's just showing the issue of them foing double standards when it comes to male and female standards in terms of beauty and body. Its like the stories you'd hear about mods being made that make the male characters either naked or close to being naked (example being Persona 3: Reload where the male characters can be left in bath towels with visible bulges) but god forbide there's a mod that makes a female character's chest size just slightly bigger, otherwise it's somehow sexist and misogynistic (same example but with the character Yuukari who had a mod that altered her body slightly). There's clearly a shift in how certain game companies want people to look at beauty and it's being done at the expense of both women and men. They'll say that they want to "express people's personality over how they look" but then turn around and attack others when people point out how the model of some of these people look like they are made of clay. It's just so mind boggling.

Lets be honest, the reason why they didn't want character creation was because they want you to play as a female character, and they want you to play as an ugly one. Look at the pictures of the people who work at ubisoft, its all women. Naturally they don't want people playing as a beautiful looking woman, they want you playing as someone like them. With an open world game, a character creator makes the most sense, or at least a few presets in male and female. But Ubisoft has been pushing hard for progressive politics in their games for a long time now, and making sure you don't accidentally choose a white male character is a big issue for them.

The problem seems to be stemming from an androgynous avoidant relationship with journalists and reviewers, a problem that started back in 2009 to 2013. There’s 2 frames of perspective - the technical aspects of 3D MoCap performance requires a model to work with. The acting and voice lines need the 3D model to align with the actor’s geometry ie the dots and reflective markers on the wetsuit/neoprene cap suits and belts, etc. the markers pair with the body and model joints and a team go thorough the video to align and solve/match the alignment issues. AI / animation is also used a bit to speed the process up, so this led to the glitch fest of faces resetting and disappearing when bad mocap data is used or left in the game. Step 2, the mocap data is then tweaked to match the 3D model and enhance facial expressions, smirks, acceleration of mouth and eyebrow expressions. Toolkits are used to match phonetics and facial shapes. To save time, some of this is farmed out to outside contractors who don’t have the same time or budget to work with, so you end up with 200 hours of dialogue made by a few people who are paid $3/hour in Romania/Ukraine. This isn’t why the FMC is ugly, that’s due to management being scared of the appeal and audience. Once you spend $2 million on the first year of development without anything to show for the work, the finance teams get worried. They need to get investors and stakeholders to become confident in the unknown. To be fair, Male faces on female protagonists is a common problem because the art teams start with the motion capture model. This then ends up in a marketing meeting where they are prevented from getting outside opinions via NDA and potential contamination of the art process, so they find groups in the company to A/B test, and build a committee to redress/list faults. They take the list, and hit the FMC with all of the advice listed. The Simpsons Canyonero meme (put everything together in one car) , but in real life, it’s usually women in the corporate structure responsible. Then artists and developers are told to “tone it down” several times because the Marketing and Advertising departments step in at these meeting to reduce the potential audience conflict ie avoiding conflict with journalists and sensitive bloggers. DEI groups are also brought in at this stage, because of the NDA and Marketing Department being involved in getting audience response to the art and development stage before they can green light or approve budgets. Kay Vess, is a female Han Solo, but they also had a blonde version which was less “manipulated” in gameplay demo they created as a preview. And this is the reason why they hit the character with an ugly stick - they got scared of the exposure. So they had to meddle and take advice from the wrong staff, which was never tested with an audience. It was tested with the women in the office. And that’s a big problem to appealing to non buyers, because they aren’t the audience. They’re the bystanders. Who are specifically detracting from the content. Who will not buy the content. And never would. The most perturbing aspect is when the management groups start to drift from a beautiful aesthetic, and find the ugly person in the office to model from, which gets picked up by the sleuths who are looking for why the MoCap actress is modified to look more masculine. This was also the period where Stakeholders were becoming part of the financing process for the project development process. And in this stakeholder engagement, news blogs stepped in to “Karen” their way into the marketing process. They wanted women to be represented, and the women they asked to get feedback, had concerns, but no solutions. You can see this in how they started to hire diversity and marketing engagement processes. Namely that the uncanny valley of 3D character development was just getting more detailed and expensive to work on, and then the Anita Sarkeesian POV started to influence the story and diversity groups. Swapping Male Gaze for Female Gaze, adding gender neutral characters, removing the quality of a symmetrical face to intentionally denature and step away from being uncanny. Journalism at the time, needed an edge and that edge was to cut into game development that was heavily dependent on marketing and media culture that was influenced by Blogs and Cheaper / sponsored influencers and media culture. They had leverage in the industry that was likely too much power over the technical aspects, without being part of the company.

If making female characters intentionally ugly and uncanny is their way of combating "the male gaze", even after modeling them on real women, it's hella misogynistic. They're implying the models are "too beautiful" and they must "tone down" their beauty, as if their femininity is something to be ashamed of. I have noticed that most of the women complaining about beautiful lead characters are usually very much overweight. This seems to be why these game companies "uglify" some of the characters. They say that it does not reflect reality, but in fact, it does. Look at the real people they model the characters after. They are beautiful/ handsome. This is what MOST players want. It is only the crybabies that are overweight that get their feelings hurt because they do not look as beautiful as the characters they see in the games.

It's not exactly a new thing. Dove soap did a campaign promoting "body positivity" in games a few years ago. It's just that it takes a while for game developers to release the final results of that initiative because games take more time to make unlike movies or shows.

The problem is that most western developers of this current Era of game or even entertainment development (funny how you never see it with devs from other countries) have developed a very unhealthy sense of narcissism, "know better than thou", antagonistic mindset towards their work and customer base. It's one thing to have a creative vision and wanting to stay true to it, but if drives you to behave so antagonistically towards the people you need buying your content, whether because of idealogy or politics, it not only does more harm to your work than anything else, but as we've noticed over the past few months, it ends up resulting in horrific job losses. It's especially infuriating when after all that halabaloo, they end demonstrating that they clearly can't cook. Imagine minding your own business, doing your work, and the sales get hurt, and your career ends up on the line because your colleague/boss was too egotistical to take criticism I dont know when or why this became a thing, but as a non westerner, I really hope it passes because it's harming the industry whether they like it or not, realise it or not.

So yes, the model used for the star wars game is Indeed pretty as heck. As for the female designs being made ugly, that's quite literally an internal mandate going through the companies. It has been given a few "reasons" 1: They don't want hot female characters because of the male gaze, aka other woman get jealous they don't look like the video game character. 2: They want to make all female characters androgynous so that trans woman feel included and can see themselves in the game/ not get upset they don't look like a naturally born woman. 3: It's a self insert like 90% of the time.

Been a gamer for more than 40 years of my life. Old school D&D/MERP/Mekton/Heavy Gear/ you name it, I probably played it over the years. Consoles and PC games for almost as long, including many many MMOs, and I have NEVER seen people willingly CHOOSE to play ugly characters. Some will play goofy ones, or slightly oddball ones, but nobody wanted to be UGLY. All the way back when Spirits Within came out, it had utterly amazing hair physics, things have gone backwards. Female characters looking attractive is a staple of gaming, just like buff male characters. We as players want to be something we might not be IRL, we want to be buff, beautiful, intelligent, funny, whatever characteristics WE lack, we tend to want our characters to have. We want to be heroes, sometimes even villains, to experience the world as someone else. I'm a bit of an oddball, I almost always build my characters to look like me, but better looking, lol. I like myself, and other than making myself a bit better looking I even keep my short and stocky stature. Game devs seem to hate themselves these days, and can't stand seeing anyone better looking then themselves, even in a game. Their sad, misertable worldview poisons everything they create. Insert Tolkien quote about evil cannot create here.

I suspect what might also make her look older is the hair cut. Star Wars had the Rebels in 70s hair cuts. Adults of the 70s are now grandparents. So many people associate that kind of style with their grandparents, thereby making anyone else in that style look older.

That art style comment hits hard for me, I have rejected whole shows I should have enjoyed because of an art style choice I didn't gel with. My friends would tell me about Adventure time and some of the things in it and I thought "Yeah this sounds like something I would like" but when I tried to watch an episode or two the art style just....didn't click. It worked for the video games I played with the characters but as an animation for a full TV series? No, no it did not work. I've often said I'm a bit of a snob in that regard since I grew up in the 90s with reruns of cartoons from decades past since I was born in the mid 1980s but mostly grew up in the 90s...I grew up with those old shows that had good animation, I grew up with stuff like Swat Kats and other shows with sterling animation...and then this wave of CalArts stuff just vomited itself onto the scene and I can't watch most of those shows cause the art style is just...ugh...to me, on top of being oversaturated in the market...it seemed like every show for a good bit had that same look.

I'm pretty convinced that their goal is to make the "female character" into what a western transwoman look like, and tries to normalize that. Which is why their face and body look halfway from masculine to feminime. It is SUPPOSED to look like that : as close as possible to HALFWAY from masculine to feminime.
