Some time ago I saw some people holding a flagpole upright while another guy climbed up in it. That did go for a meter or two, but the people holding it were not able to keep the balance. They were not strong enough to hold it upright, and the whole thing crashed to the ground. I watched them trying it again, but the same thing happened. They tried a third time, same results. That was when I asked them what they were doing. One of them told me they wanted to know how high the pole was. Looking at the pole, I told them to simply measure it lying on the ground. Quite obvious, I would think. That guy looked at me and said, "Are you stupid or what? We want to know how high it is, not how long it is". They were flat-earthers, no doubt about it.

He actually dodged the question by simply asserting distances are linear and only work on a flat plane by not saying how it is the result is accurate on a globe and what method he could use to calculate the same distance on a flat plane. There was no attempt to calculate the distance to Russia on a flat plane. This is the same logic he used with celestial navigation. Assert it only works on a flat plane. Fail to explain why it actually does work on a globe, and fail to demonstrate it ever being used assuming a flat plane.

Maybe one could argue that since the earth's shape is better approximated as an oblate spheroid than a sphere, you'd have to deal with the fact that ellipses have no algebraic solution for their perimeter. Or you could argue that the earth is not even a perfect oblate spheroid, having infinitely intricate topographical features, so you'd have a coastline paradox if you don't create a minimum for the division size, but that seems a little beyond most flat earthers.
@WitchidWitchid2 күн бұрын
So I guess railroads can only determine distance on straight sections of track. Curved sections have no length. Therefore the entire distance a train travels can be determined by only measuring the straight track sections and ignoring the curved sections because they have no length.
