2 billion years, eventually through a leap of faith, some bacteria(he thinks) became a part of cellular life we don't witness until Cambrian explosion, or just before. it's a bit of a leap, turning bacteria into cellular life with multiple functions across a range of areas. Evolution certainly had nothing to do with it, so what did?

Even though paternal mitochondria in most cases are wiped out and their mitochondrial DNA tends to not be passed on, an overwhelming amount of the DNA which encodes the proteome of the mitochondria is actually Nuclear DNA, so both parents contribute significantly to mitochondria, the maternal side just sightly more so. The Mitochondrial DNA only encodes most of the Electron Transport Chain proteins and the mito-ribosomes and mito-tRNA, which couldn’t function without the Citric Acid Cycle proteins which synthesize the NADH and FADH2 required for the ETC to work. This isn’t to downplay the mtDNA as unimportant but rather to just stress the importance of the interconnectedness of the genomes both parents contribute.

Hi Anton. Regarding mitocondria, there is a new field in psychiatry called metabolic psychiatry. Their main tenet is that mitocondria is the primary cause of mental disorders and those can be fixed if you fix your mitocondria. Proponents of this new approach are (among others) Dr Georgia Ede and Dr Christofer Palmer.

It's certainly something that's quite a bit older than this being brought forward using newer techniques and understanding, I certainly will have to read up on this, as this lines up with my own experience and understanding of psychology which I've been using for over 20 years, where a healthy lifestyle and meditation can do a lot to understand your mental state and steer it, though I never would've thought it was actually influencing positively Mitochondria would be a key to possibly control you problems very interesting and maybe reading up on this might end up being the piece I was missing in my own work

Dr Lynn Margolis, "in her formative paper, "On the Origin of Mitosing Cells", appeared in 1967 after being rejected by about fifteen journals.[3] Still a junior faculty member at Boston University at the time, her theory that cell organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplasts were once independent bacteria was largely ignored for another decade, becoming widely accepted only after it was powerfully substantiated through genetic evidence."

"Midi-chlorians in The Phantom Menace are part of a recurring theme throughout the movie, that of symbiotic relationships.[21] They were loosely based on mitochondria, organelles that provide energy for cells; like midi-chlorians, mitochondria are believed to have once been separate organisms that inhabited living cells and have since become part of them; even now, mitochondria act in some ways as independent lifeforms, with DNA all their own. Lucas established this relation with mitochondria, in particular the necessity of midi-chlorians for life to exist, as a metaphor for society; namely, he says all parts of society must get along in much the way the midi-chlorians and their symbiont do.[26]" [source Wookipedia]

@@BasaBoi The extra reading material attached to the museum labyrinth and other similar things, like articles and books scattered throughout the game, was done similarly to how Assassin's Creed 2 would later map out Italy's historical references. I think SquareSoft did the best job giving the most accurate information on mitochondria in an order that is much easier to understand than any textbook. I'm so excited on this update from Anton, because I've been hard on mitochondria lately, but more on the relations with acids and alkaloids. It kind of led me onto a path about reading on alkaloids and the use of cancer medicines since 2013. I never did watch the live-action movie from Japan, nor did I read the book. But I did play the 2nd game, and The Third Birthday. There was still some good information in the 2nd game, but the original has recently been hitting my happy place, and ironically, I got obsessed again about two weeks back.

what does this mean? collective conciseness is an interesting idea until you realize aliens are probably real and also have one. are we (aliens with consciousness included) all experiencing through consciousness? we probably do and will experience again after death in a new brain. obviously you wouldn’t remember anything before you were born and i’m not saying you’d be the same person “reborn” this isn’t reincarnation. you’d be someone else entirely with an entirely different life and brain. this repeats until there are no more capable brains in the universe to experience consciousness

These are new mind blowing thoughts to me thanks to you and Anton. I can speculate only that a soul is not perpetual till it's capable of residing physically in a nourishing new Symbiosis and the only way is a depository of collective consciousness, like Aiwa in Avatar; and since I'm being ridiculous, Aiwa can be used as a hive mind. Most our studies find chemical (pheromone) like methods of communication in hive mind ants. So maybe our vocal nature is preventing us from developing additional chemical sensors into our physiology for more advance type of communications that can bring mitochondria to its reason for being from the getgo.

Mitochondria are important in the immune system, particularly in neutrophil cells. They are important in pyroptosis to fight cellular invasion, netosis to 'net' bacteria and parasites in the blood using expelled DNA, production of reactive Nitris oxides also for anti-bacterial effects and vasodialation. By the same methods however, they are also key players when inflammation and immune system goes heywire and very self destructive as in lupus kidney damage, lung damage etc.

Thanks to the people doing the actual science as I've done none of that, but I have been suggesting that mitochondria were more than dumb generators for decades. Just as some scientists are now asking who serves who in regards to our microbiome, we can also ask whether plants serve our needs or vice-versa. These are all symbiotic relationships where our insecurities convince us that "we" exist as separate entities from other living things or are at least masters over them; somehow a desirable, and thus survival-enhancing, concept to the human mind. Sentience allows us to sustain comfortable beliefs that, in turn, make us better servants to the microbes and plants that partner with us. "We" is something that most humans are too insecure to imagine and that bias is itself an adaptation; ignorance is literally bliss.

Ever since AP biology I realized the human ego is offended by our mitochondrial symbiosis or we would refer to our individual selves as “we.” That’s why we need our ego so we can think critically as individuals. 9:59 well what I’ve always imagined is that the mother is the incubator so the father brings differences so if the mom is the stable then she might hold certain foundations like an egg instead of the difference every time. It’s like sharing the current with potential. A house is a solid foundation to maintain stability and the fathers seed brings difference to help shape difference into a relative foundation. Sounds weird but just my thoughts. 11:48 yeah they might compete or cause mutations. It’s like fitting a puzzle piece into a slot, if the puzzles got an extra thing, it can cause interferences. Destabilization and relative collapse. It causes mutations or deformities probably or causes full collapse.

Holy crud! Parasite Eve was a gift by my mother for Christmas when the game first released! I learned about the Mitochondria through the mini-game in the museum! This one game got me so interested in Biology. And I still have the game in my collection.

Dmt attaches to the mitochondria, that particular action is already used by stoke ambulance units cause it greatly prevents post stroke symptoms as well as they are experimenting with long term treatment to reverse damage

Many Sci-Fi books, movies, games are not only inspired but actually informed about things that most people don't know to be true. The authors sometimes know more than the general public. Seems like this numt-thingy is a way for evolution to kick into higher gear when things start to look bad and a better adapted organism is required.

I played that game back in the day and it was so long ago it had the world trade centers as background buildings. Was a cool game, learned about Mitochondria and what it actual is. That is how Mitochondria Eve was able to cause people to burst into flames, it would make the Mitochondria overload and over heat. Was a very cool game, kinda creepy as a kid, but lot of fun.
