And how about Jim Bowie, he's the one that invented it. :) Funny thing, back when I went to Jim Bowie Elementary School in the Dallas Texas area, they had a replica of his knife in the show case of the school. Kidos parents would totally freak out over something like that today.

His brother did or his brothers knife maker did or something like that if I recall correctly. The other version, which I believe, is that it was simply a butcher knife that had a false edge added to it. The butcher knife would have looked like an old hickory butcher knife which if you reshape the tip a bit on those to have a false edge and a swept back tip hey presto it's a Bowie knife! The second version doesn't make the first one false either.

Great review as always! I agree, no use changing any part of your testing routine.I like the consistency, gives comparable results. Your reviews and testing are always a blast to watch. I like my carbon steel knives, but also like my Stainless knives as well. Stainless comes in many different flavors and carbon content varies widely by type, so today you can get SS with quite a bit of carbon in it. However heat treat is probably even more important to how the blade preforms. And by the way if people want to stay traditions, get an Old Hickory butcher knife, that is very similar to what the mountain men actually carried. The Old Hickory is very well heat treated 1095 carbon steel and is a steal at the price, and I have one of them also. Great review thumbs up!

My first the blade was shaped nearly exactly like that but just under 7". A superb chopper. Used the heck out of it from 1969 to 2001/02. I just can't find one to replace it with a handle set up the way I want it. lol Maybe I should just give up and buy one from Schrade like that one. It's not like that one can disappoint me. And yes I do prefer carbon steel but not to the point of avoiding SS.

Say Heah Brain, Boy was I lucky. Because I took my time ordering my Becker Bundok BK-20 because I already had the BK-4 and BK-5 that was in the Limited Edition, But since I really like my BK-4. and BK-5 I pulled the trigger and I was told I was the last one to get atleast where I got it. I waited thinking I'll wait for the price to go down when it sold by itself. But then I was at my Forum when Ethan informed us that once the 450 kits were sold, That there won't be anymore left and that the BK-4 and BK-5 would also be discontinued also. As large as the Old Timer Bowie is, The BK-20 Bundok has almost a 11 " blade, and yet my Busse Combat Anneversay Straight Handle Battle Mistress LE is longer, They BK-20 is also a 1/4" thick. The handle is very comfortable as all Beckers are. But I like Bowies too, So Thanx for sharing, It's nice enough to look into it, Thanx, Brain.

You show everything most folks do or should at the most do with a knife without actually attempting to break the knife by doing something you should not. Keeping all the things the same does indeed allow folks to compare the knives. About the only thing I can see that is beyond the norm would be the balance test. Of course that does show the toughness of the knife.

Are you sure that the handle scales are deer antler? I bought one of these and absolutely love it. I am having doubts about whether the handles are antler or plastic. They are so smooth and shiny, almost translucent, that they look like they might be plastic. I didn't think antler could look like that, but I haven't seen many. I'm not sure how to determine. Thought about heating a pin red hot and poking it to see if it melts or burns. Hate to damage it that way, though. What do you think?

Fantastic review on a fantastic knife.. while I like modern design knives and military knives... I love traditional designs traditional hunting knives traditional Bowie knives..(I know Bowies real personal knife did not look like the modern version but that's okay).. so glad this knife brings back many memories of movies and TV shows from my childhood Daniel Boone Davy Crockett... The mountain men... I'm so glad that Uncle Henry used real stag instead of plastic! $99 for this knife is a fantastic value! Not something I'm going to be toting in the woods looks kind of large and heavy but I would like to get one just for my collection... Yeah occasionally I might have it on my hip out in the woods... This may also be a good knife for reenactors you know the guys who take black powder flint.lock muskets and act out recreations..?.. also the single action association guys.. compete with the old fashioned single action antique guns....

Would really like to hear your thoughts after you have spent a weekend in the woods the knife hanging off your belt. Things like edge retention, did the sheath scratch easily, did you switch to a secondary knife for some tasks (if so which ones), was it comfortable to hike with it on your belt, or did you end up stuffing it in your pack, did people hiking on the trail see the knife and call 911 -- all of this would be good to know. So if you take it for a spin, I hope you will update us. Cheers,

A testing routine is great to compare knives HOWEVER if the routine is too simple it doesnt show much since nearly all the knives pass with no problem... I used to watch a few knife channels that did a little bit more "destructive" testing and one could easier see the differences. a few ideas you could still do that belong do knives tasks are 1) testing the tip, its usually the weak point of knives, stab and pry on a wood, dril holes etc. i had a few cheap knives break their tip on me after just stabbing it and prying a little to get it out. 2) cutting / stabbing harder materials like wires or thin steel plates, that really shows edge and tip retention and lock quality with folders 3) cutting plastic, like bottles etc.. one can really see sharpness there and if a knife can cut even through the hard plastic of the cap or the neck of the bottle you know its sharp and tough. Anyway keep it up, its a great channel to watch
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 8 жыл бұрын
+magicshon I am not a fan of tip tests. I honestly think it is just a good way to prove that most knives can be broken. I know some knives can take it but I don't think that just because a knife can't it makes it a bad knife. Just my opinion.

Hi, can you please tell me, if its by your experience a big difference in performance between Shrade Uncle Henry 184 and 181? I watch your videos about both, but you have real experience, so I ask. I want some big knife for outdoor and hunting tasks, mainly for bush clearing, light-medium chopping, fire wood preparation and some other bushcraft tasks. I already have Ka-Bar Cutlass and Kukri and they both performed well, but now I want sometning more traditional. So what do you thing, which one is better for hunting/outdoor tasks - 181 or 184 ( I mean basic models with staglon handle)? Which one would you choose and why? Thanks in advance for your answee and good luck.
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 7 жыл бұрын
Honestly, it depends on which one you like. The 184 has a better blade shape for chopping in my opinion but the 181 has a better handle for chopping tasks. The 184 handle is revere tapered so it wants to slide out of your hand a little bit when chopping.

Can you do a review on the Mtech Extreme Raptor Bowie knife?? You will find that's probably the largest and thickest knife around, but not only that, it's made out of very good steel and extremely sharp. I bought one recently and I absolutely love it. If you truly love knives and want an affordable, excellent quality Bowie knife, then look no further than the Raptor Bowie from Mtech. This knife comes very sharp and can take anything you throw at it, I highly doubt you'll be able to throw this knife!!!

Very nice knife, very good review. Regarding your knife testing; I agree that consistent test methods are the way to go, I one heard Ethan Becker say that he uses a new knife to whittle a tent stake as this task checks the carving/slicing ability, the notching ability as well as the ability to chop a long stick into small sticks. With a Bowie Knife it is probably best to ask yourself if Jim Bowie would be pleased with it rather than David Crockett or Daniel Boone, just sayin'. 😀

Keep the same routine, it does give a good benchmark between each knife. However, for the close ups and such I think you should have a look at some tech channels and see how they showcase phones - b-roll with voice overs. Your hands are a bit wobbly. Love your channel, keep up the good work :D

I actually usually do something like that but it just takes so long in editing I'm trying to speed up my process. And those bigger channels have a bigger budget for mini dollies and stuff.

7cr17mov steel is crap, I've broken SO MANY 7cr blades! It chips easy, I feel like you endorse it because you get these knives for free. Yeah, they "get the job done" but compared to other blades costing $96, there is WAY better out there. I'm warming up to Jessica x, it costs me $56
@SurvivalOnPurpose

I have beat the heck out of a bunch of Schrade 7 cr steel knives and haven't broken a single one. And the "free" thing doesn't mean much anymore. You can only use so many knives and I was really bummed when I found out Kroger won't take them for groceries. What it means to me now is content, and Schrade sends me stuff even when I don't "endorse" a product, which seemed to be a pattern for a few recent videos. And if you are interested in the Jessica X, I just shot a video today doing a "chop off" between it and two other knives. That will be the next Schrade Saturday video.

I like carbon a lot, but I don't loose a lot of sleep over it. My import Bud* bowie and Hibben and three Nieto are SS. I don't really care if my old sabatier and old hickory or old timer folders are all pitted and ugly. This knife looks like a reasonable alternative to something like a puma

Consistency is a good thing, you know what works for your tools and channel. And its not a Calibration Error, its a high impact drop simulation. Slow-Mo Curls, doesn't get any better. If a zombie bites Chuck Noris, it will be cured.

Love the reviews, don't change a thing. I'm gonna go broke watching your videos lol. I think this Bowie is calling me. I don't use a knife for flint striking. I have a flint and steel and char cloth in a tin. It's in a leather case that stays on my belt. Keep up the great videos. Also will you be doing any videos on your wilderness adventures?

I love that knife. Regards to the stainless steel, I live 4 miles from the ocean.I really gotta stay on top of my carbon steel knives or they rust on me. I love stainless blades. Heck I actually bought an opinel in stainless a couple months ago for just that reason.

How is the tip of a knife not considered a high essential part of a bowie knife. Ur able to baton because of a sharp tip thats strong.
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't say it was not an essential part of the knife. I just don't consider stabbing into something and prying with it to see if you can break it "general use". I have only done that with a very few knives that are marketed as true 'Survival knives", such as the First Edge 5050. I know a lot of folks do "tip testing", I just don't think it is a reasonable test on many knife designs. To each their own I guess.
