I love how Uncle Iroh in early season 1 is a study in playacting incompetence strategically. This man is a Highly Respected, Decorated War General, the Dragon of the West, and he's knocking stuff over and being so affable and jolly talking about food and tea and shopping and music that he completely lulls everyone into a false sense of security. It's genius. Don't mind me, I'm retired, I'm not a threat, I'm just here on vacation with my charming nephew. 🤣

Iroh has seen the best and the worst of the human condition for decades. He has lost his only son (and in all likelihood, his wife). Combine that with being able to see spirits and related phenomena, the man likely has little fear left for his own safety. Beyond that, I suspect that he tried the 'White Jade' to make sure that, if it was safe, that his nephew would not be at risk. Let's all be like Iroh. Show compassion, but, know when to put aside toxic or dangerous people. Try new things and care for others, but, keep yourself well, firstly.

I personally like to think of it like giving Zuko tea during lightning bending training “to calm the mind”. It’s not intentional but he goes “oh hey that’s good, actually.”

They had info on the avatars whereabouts he wanted to keep secret for his nephew. It’s this reason that seems to spark a reaction from the question Zhao asked. Iroh’s early character writing I feel painted him as clumsy and harmless and then more serious and somber after softening the viewers up to him. They made him more wise after this trust was established with the viewer as well.

You know, I just thought of something. There are multiple instances where Iroh sings or plays music, and he's certainly not bad at it. He may be wise, but also impulsive, and he essentially seduced that one Earth Kingdom ticket lady. Uncle Iroh is ATLA's bard.

Actually one of the main reasons Iroh plays music and hosts music night and buys the tsungi horn is because, as Nickelodeon's interesting facts showed during a rerun, Zuko is actually a tsungi horn prodigy, and Iroh is trying to get him to join in with the crew, and to relive a little bit of that former joy. I can imagine he used to play it for his mother and she would hug him afterwards and say it was beautiful.

Ngl, Iroh and Zuko's relationship is honestly beautiful throughout the show. I love how Iroh just always tags along with Zuko while still giving him advice and being a sort of comedic father figure to him. 😭And no matter what Zuko does, Iroh always knew there was good in him and just needed to make the right choice. Hence why he yelled at him in Ba Sing Se making him think about freeing Appa. He's there for Zuko while letting him make his own choices. Overall, I love their relationship. I know I may be yapping but Iroh and Zuko are the goats.

Interesting... That scene where Iroh knocked over those weapons, I always assumed he did it because of the question commander zhao asked Zuko in an attempt to distract him and change the subject. But when you really watch closely, like here, you can see it was already falling before he even asked the question. I guess I gave Iroh too much credit.

Impulsive, sure, but intrusive thoughts are typically more in the area of thoughts that your brain brings up that you don’t want to do on any level. Examples being things like “what if I just slam the gas and run that guy over right now,” or “what if I just like, snapped their neck while they were turned away,” or “what if I’m a child predator” and unwillingly seeing those in your mind. The reason they’re called intrusive is because they intrude on your brain space and you don’t want them. I hope that makes sense 😅
