One time I was cat fishing off the bank, I heard something splashing around and coming my way, I grabbed my flashlight to take a look at what it was, and it was and alligator gar (alligator gar is what we call them in north Alabama). Well, when I had my flashlight trained on him, I noticed that the fish had something wrapped around its nozzle. That gar had a mason jar ring wrapped around its snout, and it kept swimming toward me. I looked, and that gar stuck its head from the water next to me, and that fish was asking me for help. I reached down, grabbed the ring, and removed it from the gar’s snout. That gar splashed around for a minute (like it was trying to thank me for the help), and it swam off back into the river. To me, that showed some intelligence in gar. After that encounter, I have never been able to kill a gar after that. Every time I see a gar, I think about that experience. It was the only time that I ever felt sorry for a fish.

Calamari in OCMD. Love seafood, fried calamari strips in sauce, excellent. Ordered calamari at a chain Italian restaurant in Baltimore area, brought out basically a fried tennis ball with tendrils, looked like the facehugger from Aliens. In the immortal words of Si, Nah. At the boardwalk restaurant eating fried calamari strips, after using squid bait at the fishing pier two blocks up the street 😄
