man I love that energy. I’m Indigenous Australian and like, a lot of people try to police me saying it because I’m not African American. Like I’m also not black because I don’t have descendants from Africa? You tell that to the people who call me a litebrite, a half-caste, a 50/50. People who have made me uncomfortable, hurt or unsafe because of my skin colour. But I’m still black, I don’t reap some sort of benefit from being lightskin other than the fact foundation is easier to find in my skin tone. And you know, after all the gatekeeping of the word, after all the bullshit people try to tell me in order to invalidate my heritage or my skin colour, to try and make me feel like I’m not ACTUALLY black and that my problems from being black don’t exist, I’ve realised it really doesn’t matter if you say it or not. Nigga is a word, its something we use on a regular basis in my family and culture. I’ve never thought that was wrong. My little brother was born fair. That doesn’t mean he’s any less indigenous. He’s black not because of his skin colour, but because its a part of who he is. He may be fair-skinned, but he’s more dedicated to his culture than his dark-skinned older brother and hes proud. Everyone has the right to be about their culture. Even white people. So if he wanted to say it, we wouldn’t even blink twice. Anyone who knows him wouldn’t blink twice. It doesn’t matter that hes fair, it doesn’t matter that African American people disagree with it, its not about them. You simply can’t police a word, its impossible. In fact I think that going that far to gatekeep it when people don’t have malicious intent is actually causing more harm than good. If its said in an insulting way its obviously understandable, but as a joke or a throwaway comment...It just isn’t a battle worth fighting. Everyone knows where the word comes from, so its not like “letting” people say it would be a form of culture erasion. If anything it will spawn more discussion in favour of black peoples if it were widely accepted in America. Theres the whole joke of the n word pass online and I honestly think that if theres that many jokes about it, its clearly not that sacred.
