I’d definitely argue that the appeal of 2Fort has less to do with being a training area and more to do with the non-serious energy it has. Because the objective is such a monumental pain to do even when compared to something like Dustbowl (which, granted, is still a pain), not many people actually bother to do it, and as a result it becomes a much less serious, more DM-focused game with way more potential for silly shenanigans, which is a style of play that lots of players really enjoy. Personally I think it’d be cool if Valve added more Player Destruction maps - Both existing PD maps are super creative in their design, so more stuff like that would always be a welcome addition, and it’d also be super popular with the “head empty only frag” crowd.

I feel you except as playing spy instead of Engineer. It is SO DAMN hard to get into position as spy in Dustbowl wether you are attacking or defending and a lot of times you're forced to cloak through the choke point which will predictably lead up to you having a better sense on how to move around spam and enemy players and keeping your cool so that you don't get caught.
@Supervergil12 жыл бұрын
Spy main here and I can confirm this after 1k+ spy hours and many, many, MANY hours on dustbowl, basically years of gaming just there and almost never touch other maps. You learn how to move IN BETWEEN lots of enemies in very tight spaces, and you adapt to fast thinking, otherwise you're dead meat in every match that isn't fully filled with totally new players. The "keeping your cool" part is true too. Honestly, after many gameplay hours, many of them being on spy, and many dustbowl hours you start to develop a sort of a 6th sense in the game I swear, you're so adapted to how players (your team included) are going to move that you almost seem like you read their minds for the most part. Pair this and all of the above with learning trickstabs, and you'll become one of these so called "pub stompers" or basically just a really, really good spy main. I also believe that my reflexes and fast thinking irl also became better due to this dustbowl bloodfest as a spy

It has the old chocky style yes but updated with newer map concepts in other respects. Like the use of glass and shutters to create more of a relationship with your enemies and map tricks designed for each class(head glitches for heavy, parkour for scouts, env kills for pyro, trick stab spots, ...) I actually feel like "bad" map design can be more fun. Good maps (in all games, not just TF2) have to be balanced to allow for all playstyles, but this means you hardly notice the map itself. While I can say I'm a bit "Dustbowled Out" at the moment from having it selected while making my videos which can be a bit like taking down a brick wall with the bristles of a toothbrush, I can say that the sheer challenge factor of Dustbowl on both sides is very appealing. Offense has so many things stacked against them that actually managing to get that final cap feels like a legitimate accomplishment, and as a result offense needs to be completely relentless and think of whatever they can to win, so even defending, despite being easier, still feels like a challenge.

There is something i love about dustbowl it can turn any moment from dominating the other team *to a 30 minute battle of Stalingrad at the last point, where K/D is just a number* Like on any other map, when medic's pocket dies, he will retreat and regroup with his team. But on dustbowl the medic will charge forward and shank the guy that just killed his pocket
@sebastianjoseph28283 жыл бұрын
Dustbowl, especially third stage, is the only map where each inch feels hard fought in the blood of a dozen teammates, and you strategize because you know one wrong move means red will push you back to spawn. Or vice versa with blu stomping red. 5CP can feel close, but just like Dane I live for the spam and figuring out how to coordinate a push.
@marthedge3 жыл бұрын
I remember one match where everyone was serious, around when contracts showed up. It was incredibly in the trenches with teammates (especially the most vocal) making commands and the enemy pushing back just as hard with teamwork+spam. Usually that isn't the case and most commands/demands are (mostly) informative but because everyone on both teams were actually putting in effort it was hell on earth. I like having the large amount of time on blu because it gives time for the team to stop pubbing hard and get itself together, or in red's case a larger and arguably more difficult defense to pull off. It's like hightower but it actually ends.

something about 20 minute dustbowl matches just GET me, man. it's an ultimate tug of war where the end result is a mystery. i sound insane but the thrill, the adrenaline, of fighting back and forth on being in either team makes me really happy. it's frustratingly rewarding. a lot of my memorable moments come from dustbowl, not to mention i often play medic and feel like i play an important role in deciding if my team would win or lose. hours and minutes of hell on earth, strong pushes, immovable holds. kd truly means nothing as people rack up numbers of kills and deaths. it's beautiful. the map that comes to a close second that is able to emulate this feeling is powerhouse.

We were on the last minute of defense when suddenly the entire blu team just decided to push, and they had like, 2 or 3 ubers or smth. And right as they were about to capture the point, I respawned, and airblasted them away, then died straight away again. But that airblast saved the whole game from being lost, and we won that round. “Being chained to 2fort” really resonated with me. I feel chained to the map myself as well, not because of nostalgia (only been playing for a year) but because it’s impossible to queue up for a pub anymore so I have to resort to community servers.

My friends and I have played 2fort so much we have callouts for every part of the map. Most are self explanatory like “water” or sewer” but we have some more. “Lobby” is just inside the entrance of the base up until “courtyard”, where the stairs are to go up to spawn and “straight” the staircase leading straight down to intel. “Basement” is the intel room and the areas leading to the straight stairs and “spiral” (self-explanatory). “Grate” is the room by the top of spiral where you can drop down or rocket jump up into. “Balcony” is the battlements and “spawn” is the main spawn and “stupid spawn is the other spawn room.

High five to everybody who grew up on Dustbowl! I also started playing the game in 2012 (around the time Meet the Pyro was released) and indeed I played most of the time on dustbowl. However I did played on other maps eventually expanding my map pool with goldrush and badwater, and than adding barnblitz, hoobo and turbine to the list (moving to the server with these 6 maps rather) and later eventually even running a server where all maps were available not just these 6. And now I'm unlikely to play a map that doesn't have jump_ prefix in it. It's been hell of a ride...
@Kmoxyy3 жыл бұрын
I think in most players lives there's a beginning, middle, and end stage of their TF2 ride and it was the same for me. *Beginning* : new, learning, dustbowl/2fort, settings, what's a console?, trade servers. *Middle* : configs, class mains, sub-classes, only badwater and competitive maps, performance > graphics, DPI/sensitivity rabbit hole, babies first UGC, community events, etc. *End* : Episode VI - Return of the Dustbowl/2Fort, surf/jump maps, "long breaks™", fun > frustration, skill has plummeted, maybe start a community server.

10:30 Well, that's what they're for! Do you get mad when you shoot a rocket out your gun and it blows up and now you don't have a rocket anymore? No, because it's a resource meant to be spent. Buildings, like ammo, still costs -something- from the other team even if that thing isn't directly a frag

The perfect Dustbowl experience is a short first round (as short as possible), a medium length second round (6 -8 minutes at the last point), and a third round that runs the entire clock, either with the defense holding out, or the offense making one last desperate push.
