I know I'm a couple months late to this (I was taking a bit of a TF2 break when this came out), but as a self-proclaimed Pyro main, this was such a fresh breath of air. Dane's said a couple of times before that he didn't really care for Pyro which I was fine with, it's alright if people don't share the same opinions all of the time. But actually seeing Dane give Pyro a chance and sticking with them despite previously not really liking them is so unbelievably nice to see. Also, as a little side note, I've noticed that people who don't tend to gel with Pyro typically enjoy the dragon's fury (which, yeah, fair), and the flare gun seems to be the only universally respected Pyro weapon. It's just a bit interesting seeing that.

Depends on the map you're playing and how coordinated both teams are. If the enemy team has better coordination and they actually work together, a Pybro will save a nest (or at least be able to prevent the team from being spammed without issue and stuff Übers so that the team can regroup and push back). It's a lot of fun when the other team actually starts to try to push together as the Engi and Pyro work together to protect their nest, if people only attack the nest one by one they're easy pickings against a good Engineer unless they can use splash damage from a safe spot.

Been several years since I’ve played this game. Pyro was in my top 3 most played classes. I think I was drawn to him because: 1. My aim was inconsistent at best with hitscan weapons 2. Pyros play style isn’t overly complicated or nuanced like spy for example, so it was rarely an overwhelming or frustrating experience 3. I just found it fun. Pyro is great for tight corridors and inside spaces, which was great because I was never the type to stick to the main paths and open areas.

Consider Dane: Your brain subconsciously predicts when an explosive class is going to throw something at you, so instead of saying "I was just kinda pressing it at random ig" you *did* actually learn how to, most of the time, time your airblasts with the enemies firing. Things like that are more of an instinct than a conscious action

+1, I think it's very likely that he's super familiar with projectile timing due to both playing a lot but specifically also because you deal with projectile classes a lot when playing engy, so it's likely he has some muscle memory from timing a soldier spamming a sentry, for instance.

Yep. When I play Pyro, half my reflects are based on predicting the timing, and the difference between a predictable Soldier and a soldier that knows how to mix up their timings is night and day. The same is true when I play Soldier, there is a huge difference between Pyros who just spam reflect, and can easily be punished for it, and Pyros that can actually predict or react to rockets well. With hundreds of hours playing both sides of this interaction, I can 100% say that airblasting is one of the most skillful mechanics in TF2.

The reason you press mouse2 when you do when an explosive class appears is because you know that that's when they are going to shoot. I do the same thing. My brain just goes "yeah he's probably gonna go from seeing me to pressing mouse1... about now" and then I right click and it works. Sometimes I mess the timing up. Sometimes I'm wrong. But this doesn't work because it's random, it works because soldiers and demomen are sorta predictable. They see thing, they shoot thing.

One of the biggest things you missed on was using airblast against the players themselves rather than on projectiles. You can juggle ANY class and keep them from running away while confusing them to the point where they can't get their crosshair on you. It works best in enclosed areas and not outside, and it's definitely something to try out. Get up close to an enemy and airblast the floor.

This video made me love tf2 that much more. The fact that someone who doesn't like a class because of their play style can like it by switching weapons and making it more personal to them. With other class based shooters I've seen, they keep adding characters instead of weapons, leading to players not playing 70% of the characters because they don't like them and there is no other way to play them. This is no means of saying the others are bad I like those too, but I've noticed I only play a couple because the rest I don't like or I get bored of them because there is only so much you can do with a character with one way of playing besides going for strategies that are different, but not good.

Character are rather inflexible, and playing them in other ways isn't just another strategy, it's handicapping yourself. It's clearly what they were going for, but you do lose something when you move toward that more rigid game.

@@strangejune Yeah, I think the core weakness of the Overwatch approach is that you end up having several characters who do the same things, which makes everyone less unique. In TF2, the Sniper has access to half a dozen rifles and bows, but in Overwatch every rifle and every bow belongs to a separate character. When you're talking about airblasts in the video I had to laugh. Airblasting, spychecks, team utility and flanking (otherwise group harrassment) is what separates a meh pyro from a fantastic pyro. The stereotypes are all there, as a pyro main (Or used to be as I hardly play the game anymore or have the time to be theorizing with other pyros on effectiveness or new metas of secondaries) I know that there are a lot of Pyros that do just that (W+M1). The natural chaos of getting random reflections and fire burning all around you as you detonate into a 7 man group while "Ummmph UMMMMMPH'ing" and combo'ing the nearest scout is what we live for. 😂 Also, hearing you talk about the flaregun is *exactly* how I feel about it, minus sidegrading as obviously the scorch shot is where it's at (so long as you can hit both the initial hit and pop on the ground)

I'm surprised you didn't mention detonator jumping because it's really fun and gives a lot of extra mobility to the Pyro. If you like the flare gun definitely try using the detonator for a bit too. It might not do the crazy 90 damage crits but it can still dish out quite a bit of damage and can hit multiple targets if you get good with the timing. It's basically like a balanced version of the scorch shot with more utility. Also the degreaser would definitely be more up your alley if you used it more IMO.

Everyone looking to learn Detonator jumping should be downloading jump_pyrokinesis. The weapon opens up so much more possibilities for the Pyro, such as catching up to escaping Medics, jumping atop a level 3 sentry without an Uber, and the not so useful but dopamine rush fulfilling Axtinguisher-Gardening. It helps immensely if you're familiar with explosive jumping already (specifically Soldier, but I came from Demo).

In my experience, all flamethrowers penetrate multiple targets, but due to how they work the closest target takes more damage. Still, yeah, plenty of times using a dispenser as cover to burn the engi and sentry. Personally fond of the Backburner/Detonator/Backscratcher roaming sPyro.

I think Pyro is really cool just because of the insane diversity of playstyles different players will love. It's so open-ended. Each primary and secondary opens up so much interesting gameplay, so you can really customize the class to a degree I don't feel from the other classes. Pyro really has a subclass for everyone.

Now I have 3 good classes I enjoy; - Engineer (Battle or Defensive) - Trolldier (I saw videos from someone on how to be a good trolldier, and I just wanna meme) - Dragon's Fury Pyro. When I used to play TF2, I mained pyro and that was the loadout I used. But, sometimes, I rocked a backburner and flanked the entire enemy team. The amount of damage and chaos one can create if you manage to actually get behind them without being seen is soooo satisfying. I might not kill most of them, but that is a sure fire way to get a lot of assists.

@@carljohan9265 IMO detonator >>>> thermal thruster always readily available for positioning and retreating, way faster to use and swap off, doesn't make the loudest noise of all time to the enemy team, great to support frontliners and harass crowds. it obviously won't allow you to get as high or far in one go but it's also a lot less obvious because you're not using it to cross giant sightlines and the height is still good enough to pull a lot of practical flanks

A large part of what makes pyro 'skilled' is positioning and timing, i think. Knowing when to deal your damage, when to airblast.. It’ll take some getting used to but if you like the flare gun, you should try the Manmelter. It’s slower than the flare gun, but once you figure out how the fire delete mechanic works, it’s really fun to precisely pop someone from across the map with crits from a pyro that tried to light up your team. Or even non crits can be fun. Takes a lot of play to figure out the arc the laser takes though.

On the topic of Pybro, my preferred pyro melee is the neon annihilator for multiple reasons. 1. It can remove sappers for some reason. 2. It does more player damage than the homewrecker. 3. Airblasting people into water for free crits will always be hilarious. I like it because it doesn’t force me to babysit engies to get utility out of it, but when I do have to, I’m able to remove sappers and possibly save the match by doing so.

I personally like w+m1 because if you're doing it effectively you have to fine ways to get in and out of dangerous situations while building up damage. Kinda how I like heavy using game sense and map advantage to boost your skill in something people might think is dumb, but actually has more depth when you stick to it.

I believe degreaser used to be the best one, because it had better switch speed and no airblast penalty (I think it used to be a flat dmg penalty instead). That's what I used to equip when I played "support" pyro.

A major issue with the axstinguisher clips is just how you repeatedly go for kills with it even when you shouldnt. The axe allows for burst damage in closer ranged encounters or against unaware players so you dont have to rely on the flames. Outside of much closer ranged encounters though youre better off using the flamethrower at a distance.

Id like to mention that the other flare gun (i forgot the name, its the alien metallic one) works well on a enemy team with pyros and extends your effective range farther while mitigating having to use the dragons fury airblast to extinguish team mates, being forced to wait 2 sec to use it. its also a good punisher to the annoying scorch shot spam pyro

I never use the degreaser either. But the philosophy is pretty easy to understand. The degreaser makes your secondary your primary. You become a flare/shotgun pyro with a flamethrower in quick swap reserve when things get all up in your grill.

From my view on it, the dragon's fury being bad at airblasting is a big part of its kit, it is just honestly better than most of the flamethrowers at actually killing people in just about any situation, so it trades some of its utility (airblast) in exchange for that offensive power. I personally typically use the normal flamethrower since it's the best at airblasting and I like playing a more defensive style. Honestly thank you for this wonderful video my dude and I hope your day goes wonderfully, it was nice seeing a pretty good look over on pyro and I'm glad you got past your initial perception of it being the W+M1 class

This is really cool, I'm a pyro main who basically uses the same loadout but switched with the degreaser, I like to think of the flames from the degreaser as a debuff to apply to the enemy before switching to my flare gun (or sometimes axtingusher when I'm using it) to do the real damage even when at close range, the switch speed is something that just adds to the skill ceiling for that kind of play and I find it super rewarding.

That's the point of combo Pyro. The degreaser is a weapon to prime enemies or reflect projectiles (or Spycheck). You can W + M1 with it, but you'll have to be smarter about doing it. The very little time it does save you can matter a lot in a deathmatch situation, which also matters for shotguns.
