Random crits. Good? Bad? Fair and balanced? It's a discussion that's been around longer than the time between my uploads.

First off, I just want to say: THANK YOU for all of the feedback! I hope that whether you agree with me or not, you can understand my viewpoint, or at the very least were entertained. Here's an unused montage and a few extra clips, if you're interested in seeing more undeserved kills or extra clips of the awesome collaborators featured in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJvTaaSDf9JkoLc A good number of people have been asking what I mean when I say "Casual and Competitive Mode should be as similar as possible" (aka Bridge The Gap™). I hope this comparison graph clears things up: i.imgur.com/XISXuun.png Feel free to check out the Twitter thread discussion on the suggestions proposed in this image for more information on the specifics of my reasoning, such as my endorsement of re-adding stopwatch to Casual: twitter.com/danekevincook/status/1021460778103189504 I could have elaborated on this in the video, but I felt like it would have taken me way too far off topic, and decided to cut it short at "this is a subject for another video entirely" - which it is. Maybe you'll see this video someday!

4:36 is naming cp_granary also cp_gravelpit intentional? It's funny if it is or isn't, but I want to know! Also I can't imagine TF2 without the hats, or the crits, yeess, *the crits* -- Beautiful sparks of colored death reign down from the heavens, promising death and lawless disarray, constantly upsetting the order. I get butterflies in my tummy just *thinking* about them.

Funny thing is, when Dane mentions how random crits encourage players to play stupidly at 10:00, it sounds like a bit of a strawman but I for one was exactly like this. When I was a kid and discovered that random crits existed I would spend ages spamming the balconys on 2Fort blindly with pipes without even aiming for anyone. And the worst thing yet is it WORKED, every time I got a random crit roller there was a good chance some poor sniper would die. I ended up thinking Tf2 was boring and stopped playing it for a couple of years until I came back and actually used my head lol

That is One way for Dane's plan to back fire. And I feel that is Well deserved. He tried to remove something that was part of the game since day one, and hasn't been complained about unless by bitchy little shits who either can't play worth a damn, or don't Seem to understand that TF2 is _Not Overwatch._ You can't just rush an enemy wielding a Grenade or Rocket Launcher and expect to survive! (That is me talking about how many _none-demoknight players_ have done that when I played Soldier or Bomber-Demo, then have the Gall to Bitch about running into the barrel of a Rocket Launcher or Grenade Launcher and cry about being 'OP as Fack, pls Neerf!' like the Whiny little idiots they are.)

My current favorite TF2 joke, is the heavy taunt "Table Tantrum." Due to the mechanics of most taunts, or oversights by the creators, the taunt is meant to be stationary. However, if you do the taunt on a cart or something else that can move heavy, without breaking the taunt, then you generate a floating table while heavy stares at the now empty space with anticipation for his next meal.

The "break stalemates" argument is even worse, and actually goes against random crits. On attack/defend game modes "stalemate" is really just defenders' victory. So if the stalemate is broken by a random crit, it will most likely go in favor of the attacking team, giving unfair disadvantage to the defense.
@pepekovallin
@pepekovallin 7 ай бұрын
True, but considering how CRIT chance works this system actually makes stalemates even more stale, since CRIT chance goes up the more damage you do, that means that if a defending team keep a consistent damage against the attackers they have a higher chance to random CRIT people, which means that it's even less likely that the attack team will find a way to win. Because of that even if they somehow manage to make a good strategy to turn the tides in their favor they can easily be shot down by a random CRIT

Actually the reason i came back to play TF2 is casual mode at its modern state (i played from 2011 to 2012(13) maybe and came back last year). Because its's C A S U A L where i can relax and not care about those mmr points. I stopped playing other games with comp mode because how stressful it is. Jerking to those miserably numbers or winrate (like what other point to play something competitively). Competitive mode is a reason not to get new players for long. It's quiet diffucult to get good at a game with somewhat moderate to high average skill per player.

My 2 cents (for casual, they should stay out of any competitive): Random Crits should help losing teams, balancing itself based on objective progress, time, maybe even periodic K/D on teams (for example, if one team's K/D over a period of time becomes far higher than the other and it doesn't seem balanced for that game mode rather than just total K/D over the entire match, perhaps per objective progress?). The chance for a random crit should also drop slowly the longer you stay alive. This would help (but obviously not eliminate) snowballing steam-rolls, and incentivize staying when losing badly for that sweet crit chance. Then when fights start to stall again, no one gets random crits. It could also help games stabilize by having a few people randomly crit when badly losing, helping to stop a massive push and allow the fights to stabilize. And of course, if you are REALLY good at the game, your skills would shine even harder as you would never have random crits, dominating enemies on sheer skill alone. After all, one of the biggest problems with casual TF2 is fight/team balance. If you are doing amazing and your team is pushing incredibly hard, random crits should not be a thing. When both teams start to stalemate and fight really hard for the objective, that's when random crits should be taken away completely. Because then when one team finally triumphs, it was not because of chance and feels far better and fair for both sides. IN ANY CASE, it doesn't have to be done this way... the main idea is that Random Crits help losing teams so that the game gets pushed into more stable fights so that Random Crits can be taken away when they do stabilize.

Nice truth bombs Uncle Dane. One of the most common comments I would get on my "TF2 is a Timeless Masterpiece" video is that I """""forgot""""" to talk about random crits. People would even go as far as to say that random crits were a counterpoint to my arguments about what makes TF2 great. I didn't talk about random crits in that video because I literally don't even see them as part of the game at this point. Honestly, random crits feel as incidental and out of place as any gameplay bug would. I can't wait to wake up to some patch notes reading "fixed a bug where you would randomly do 300% base damage with no falloff." TF2 combat is so brilliantly constructed... please Valve let it stand on its own merit Oh and also, the pokemon battles were an absolute pleasure! Great idea for illustrating that concept

I'm a veteran player in tf2 but I have to agree you on the melee section in your video. As an Engineer main, you'd know that your wrench also has a high chance of randomly critting. When I get cornered, I just start swinging it and 50/50 times I'd survive the encounter that I DEFINITELY SHOULDN'T HAVE since I managed to one shot a soldier that got too close to me. This conditioned me to start randomly swinging my melee instead of trying to work on my positioning and escape routes since just randomly critting a poor sod pays off quite well.

ik this video is 5 years old but some weapons that become worse with the removal of random crits are the scottsman's skullcutter: one of it's most important damage numbers is the 234 crit hit bringing a max head full hp eyelander demoknight to 1hp meaning you can outclass the melee subclass who's had to snowball for quite a while and had to sacrifice all of their explosive weapons to get to that point by rolling the 65% max crit chance roll which on demoman isn't too hard by just using stickies without crits you can 3shot soldiers and boot+sticky demos but both of them deal enough damage to kill you quicker than you can reach them and they both have ways to escape you that combined with the less speed you have while having it equipped makes it not really viable for much other than full demoknight to try and take down an eyelander demo carrying the enemy team but for that the eyelander is just as good and even lets you profit from his snowball any syringe gun other than the overdose and crossbow: if you're alone in syringegunning range you should probably use the ubersaw since that gives you a chance to escape and have a few seconds of uber to potentially get value from the only thing making them usable is the continuous stream of crit needles doing extremely good damage without crits they're a subpar self defence weapon with hard to hit slow moving projectiles that you can really only use to kill people with either 10 hp or 10 hours in game neither of which are reliable to count on unless you're using the solemn vow in which case the overdose is still better as you can pick and choose your fights stock melee weapons on most classes: most melee weapons are made for utility over active combat and the ones that are have a built in way of doing devastating damage with the exception of stock melee weapons that really only exist for if you run out of ammo somehow without crits spies, demoknights, carbine+wacka snipers, kgb heavies, warrior's spirit heavies and whoever else you want to go melee only with would have so much more fun and nothing is really lost other than sometimes getting a funny kukri kill on a trickstabby spy the pomson: the only reason to use it is for invisible crit projectiles without crits they would be gone you can still pester spies and drain medic uber in point blank range but a shotgun shell drains cloak and uber completely for 20ish seconds the shahanshah: it can do up to 244 on a crit at under half health meaning soldiers even with slight overheal become 1shottable and max head eyelander demoknights immediately die without crits it's similar to the skullcutter except instead of being bad because you can't catch up it's bad because you have to be under half health as a light class with no mobility to begin with to do the 3shot combo no weapon becomes completely unusable since they still all deal damage but saying no weapon becomes worse with the removal of random crits isn't entirely true

I understand both arguments. I wouldn’t shed any tears if the got rid of them or if they kept them. I’m probably on the side of keeping them though because that’s what we’re used to, it’s been a mechanic for literally 15 years and we all know how they work. When they suck, they suck, but it kind of teaches you to not take the game 100% seriously. Just take the game 90% seriously and shake it off when you get crocketed, and you’ll be fine.

Idk about *removing* them, but in casual, an improvement could look like changing the formula to favor players who are severely underperforming so that they're not quite as much of a useless dead weight to their teammates. However, as Dane mentioned, the formula only accounts for damage (as far as we know), which favors certain classes over others and encourages brainless spamming. So, instead of or alongside damage, it should account for other stats, like healing, deaths, kills, and objective time, depending on the player's class. In my opinion, random crits could just be relegated to inherently chaotic modes.

I know this is the popular opinion, and I normally am a huge stickler for fairness in games and dislike most RNG elementa, but I love that TF2's casual play is more popular than its competitive. I love that it tends to be more concerned with fun than winning. I know most people feel that random crits ruin their fun, and I think that's valid. For some reason, being killed by them doesn't really bother me like I'm sure it would in counter strike or something. I don't buy that they teach new players to have bad habits since there's a very clear visual and auditory cue, and most other arguments here correctly point out that it makes the game less fair and less competitive. In TF2, I do genuinely enjoy the game more that way, where anyone trying their ass off can be blown to mist by pure luck. It happens infrequently enough that I don't feel like my skill level is being heavily impacted. Your pokemon damage calculation example was AMAZING and well put together, but if either player is damaged it already doesn't work, and the element of randomness of happening to run into a damaged enemy who you didn't see previously and you kill easily isn't viewed as being as frustrating.
