This comment makes me happy, but also sad because now I know western media's actually succeeded 😮‍💨China's big cities are metropolitan af and they're not much different than Tokyo - when I went back in 2016 it was so much more advanced than the UK that I was shocked - these traditional cities are also super well kept, but because of the media no one even knows about these places ):

I don't do it very often, but when I see a god-tier video I download it, just incase the internet happens to like shut down because of a... i don't know, an apocalypse or something. I mean KZbin stores all of it's data in a server house sitting somewhere so even if a plane happened to coincidentally crash in the exact same spot - say goodbye to KZbin you know? It's kinda crazy to think how fragile and vulnerable our data on the internet really is - from our photos in the cloud, to our money in the bank. I think we lean a bit too heavily on this little web i'm afraid. Anyways, all of this just to say: I downloaded this video :)

7:30 - 8:00 Damn, over a billion people have witnessed such drastic changes in just one generation. As an outsider, how dare I speak of what they should think about their government that we all hate in the west despite knowing close to nothing about them? We just know a couple of thing and I think that's not enough (and fair) to encapsulate such a country. This whole conundrum sounds so manifest destiny-esque to me.

If people from the West say there is no freedom in China, they should watch this travel episode. Gypsy’s house with all his art work is simply amazing…i am an artist in the US, i just can’t believe how great his art work is -full to the brim up to the ceilings! Plus he got to model, and he is a trans, how great is that-- he got full expression and acceptance! And friend in Chongqing she and her family were so wonderfully welcoming, so full of joy and appreciation of their lives. And your Yangzhou friend speaks such good English, and so good looking. I went to China in 1992, stayed for two years, met my wife while being a guest on her radio show, and never looked back (We ended up producing our own radio show together). Now 30+ years later, watching you interact with individuals who will become your lifelong friends, I'm feeling an affinity for when I first stepped off the plane in Shanghai on my way to my teaching gig in Hangzhou. I had a used Pentax Super Program and I captured as many photographs as I could throughout my time there in the early 90s. There's a nice thread between what I saw during those days and your storytelling in 2023. I was in Chongqing in 1993 for a day before boarding the ferry to travel through the now submerged Three Gorges. Chongqing was extra surreal to me then, now it looks like a super-charged extension of Shanghai on an even more techno-futuristic scale. I'm looking forward to going back there. Cheers!

On a visual level, this film has a Lost in Translation vibe, but on a deeper level, nothing at all is lost in translation. Because you and your hosts truly connect as human beings.

I felt like I was reading a book of short stories but in the best way possible. I loved getting to see 3 very different people living 3 very different lives but in such a short format. It really shows how every single person is unique and living completely different lives. no story is the same. Loved this one, Luke. another banger

This film is beautiful. As I was indirectly meeting all of these people through you, I was thinking of the question “are people shaped by culture or is culture shaped by people?”. I am not sure but I think it might be both and I think I like the idea of humans being molded by culture and others over time. But more than that it shows how the basic emotions of humanity are included in every culture. Sadness, joy, adventure, love. Deep down we are all not very different Anyways, as someone who is not able to travel at this time in my life, I really enjoy your stories that you share, thank you :)

You are so much wiser than most (I hesitate 'your years' as time does not necessarily maketh a wise person), which makes you open. Wiser than geopolitics or framing it -thank you for just being interested in places and people for who they are, not what they represent. I can't think of a more refreshing take rn.

Luke Korns videos breath fresh life into me. Makes me remember that I can create and travel, that none of my problems can really stop me to delve into the world and my own passions. That you as a person are not limited by anything, and can literally do things that you want. The everlasting reminder that we eventually have to say goodbyes to things, and that in itself creates love, connection and appreciation for them. Thank you, Luke Korns, for existing and may the year 2024 be a blessing for you and people you love.

This video essay and love letter only makes it all more obvious: it's people that make a place, not the location. The fact that you met such cool people and have connections like this would stand in stark contrast to if you went to these places alone and didn't meet these people. Amazing film work, and so cool the video. Like for example opening on gypsy. What a human being, amazing! ❤

My favorite filmmaker in the country I am most curious about-China, especially Chongqing since it’s been all over my feed recently. How was your experience with navigating the city? I heard even GPS won’t be much of a help when walking through the city of Chongqing. I’ve always wanted to see it myself. Hopefully next year. Anyways, this is beautiful, Luke.
