The 5.7 Hemi may not be a new thing, but it's new to us! Before we dig in and get building this one for Kiwi's Hemi-subishi, we give it a good looking over and compare the various features to its Whale and Elephant ancestors.

The fact that they made a 392 gen I hemi and a 392 gen III hemi leads to a lot of confusion. Kind of like a 5.0 Ford Windsor and a 5.0 Coyote. If you're searching for early 392 stuff you get mostly new 392 stuff in your search results.

Alright Uncle Tony!!! Gettin down with the Gen3s. That's what I know like the back of my hand. I work on them and tune on them at a premier Hemi performance shop, for a living. I'm slowly retro-learning the old stuff, the roots, that you're into. And your channel is TOP notch for that. The cylinder head that you have is from an 09+ year engine, and NO longer had the valve seat issues that the 03-08 had. So NO worries there. Lifter failure has been an off and on issue, which Chrysler just made a new revised lifter a couple years ago. People call it the Hellcat lifter upgrade, when in fact, it's the same lifter that now goes in anything Gen3. My 03 Ram with upgraded cam has 150k, and my 07 Charger Daytona R/T has 239k , neither have had lifter nor valve seat issues. Keep on Rockin with the videos, and learning process!

@@shaunclifton5281 A body or B body? Aftermarket K frame will save tons of work and headache. The alternator will want to run into the pass frame rail. I'd notch the pinchweld back to clear, then weld the seam closed. We went with a different OEM, alternator with a smaller case, BUT, we had to make a custom extended Alt. pulley to align the belt properly. Aftermarket steering shaft is a must, and would recommend a power steering rack. We used RMS, they made K frame equipped with rack, and motor mounts. If you go that route, the Hellcat P/S pump needs to be sent out and revalved, other wise it creates too high line pressure and blows seals out of the rack after a short while.

Alpha, really happy you got a chance to finally put hands on a modern gen III hemi and were impressed by the design! Back in the day, mopars in general and hemis in particular were arch rivals to those of us in the 'gm' camp. I can't speak for the 5.7 but the 6.4 in my Challenger is, in my opinion, a thoroughly impressive engine. It moves that 4200 lb behemoth exceedingly well. Loads of smooth power and tq throughout the RPM range. I will be closely watching content related to this build, since once I get the Procharger bolted on, I completely expect to grenade a piston in the 392 necessitating a (gen III) forged 426 build. Then I can REALLY turn up the wick. Perhaps we can collaborate in the future if (let's face it WHEN) necessary... BTW: "'self limiting belief and despair stage, and into pragmatic resignation" was an absolute GEM. I appreciate articulate, intelligence, with a little irony, self deprecation and snark added. lol

I, too am an old line MoPar guy. My first car was an original flawless used 1971 Road Runner with a 383. After that, excepting a fully restored 1958 Plymouth Fury (a real one, which I still own) I drove Lincolns, BMWs, etc from the 90s to the present day. Mostly 1991-93-95 Lincoln Town Cars. Loved them as an everyday ride. I felt Chrysler had nothing to offer me. They were in the Minivan file. Then the 2005 300c came out and that changed everything. I was most impressed with the package, so I ordered one of the very first 06 300c SRT8s in black. Loaded with every option. I still have it. What I wasn't prepared for was how damn reliable the car has been. Outside of a battery, spark plugs, brakes, fluid, and a couple of tie rod end links, the car has been stone cold reliable. I was prepared for the opposite. And very, very fast. The 6.1 liter Hemi is incredible. I drive it and a 2015 GMC Sierra SLT. And that's a great pick up truck.

Good stuff 👍. What's even better is I LOVE 71 Roadrunners/ Satellites especially with a 72 grille swapped in. I actually like the 71 & 72's better than the 68, 69, and 70. I have also been collecting 58 Plymouth parts for the possibility of building a 1 off 1958 hardtop wagon. Bumper wings are a Must. I hope someone out there starts reproducing bumper wings.

My mom had a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it served her very well. I remember saying "If Chrysler built cars this well in the 80s, they wouldn't have been in so many mergers and sell-offs." It wasn't as good as the Honda CRV she has now, but she got a lot more car for her money when she bought the Jeep GC.

I am sure you know this. Body filler is like a sponge it will soak in water. Then when you seal it the metal under it will rust. Moisture sealed in will also cause problems with the finish, bubbles and such. I have 20 years in the body industry I see it time to time were someone let the filler get wet and it caused major problems a year or so later.

The reason why the valve seats drop on those because the seats are made put of powder metal and since aluminum expands under heat and powder metal don't so when you shit you car off a valve is left open then the seat drops then you start you engine then is destroys it. So the machine shop cuts all the seat put and puts regular harden seat so it doesn't happen again

Another great review Tony! I like the way your excited about the gen 3. They really did do their homework with these. They even picked the minds of the old engine engineers to see what they would change or alter. Later 6.1 and 6.4 are even more impressive, Let alone the hellcats. They only thing I question on them is the totally enclosed camshaft. If you look at any other Chrysler V-8 the top areas of the camshaft tunnel are open or have open slots that allow the drainback oil to flow back down over the camshaft when draining back to the pan. So reduced oil coverage compared to any previous Chrysler V-8. And these new Gen 3 Hemis are the ONLY Chrysler engines to ever have any kind of camshaft/lifter issues.?? Seems like more than a coincidence...... Thanks Tony!

Holy shit sticks Batman, look at the mongonsterous size of the intake valves!!!! Wow!!! They're fucking HUGE!!! Plus, like the old school race Hemis with the double spark plugs, you get your fuel ignited for sure! I wondered why they didn't have 4 valves per chamber, but with monster valves as huge as they are,who needs them!?! Thanks for showing us the guts and stuff guys, I really appreciate it!!!!!

Hey, Tony. That is a later Eagle 5.7 (2009+) and doesn’t have the valve seat issues, but can have lifter issues if they are MDS (multiple displacement system). If the valve seats look good, touch them up and leave them. Get non MDS lifters and you are off to the races. I agree, great design. Dropped one in my 78 D100 Utiline short box. Rebuilding the trans now (545RFE). Should be fun! Keep it up!

Amazing the size of the oil holes, and I still get better oil pressure than my LS1 when using 5w-20 in thr Hemi.

Tony, the issue with valve seats is a materials issue, tends to happen after over heating. The newer 5.7L hemi, 09 or newer, has a different head with different valve seats and will fix it if you can find a set of junk yard heads. The other bonus on that as well if you are staying NA with this is that the quench zones are bigger on the eagle/09+ heads so you can bump the compression ratio significantly with a head swap.

I'm glad to see you looking forward engine wise. I was a E-body guy my favorite was my J code AAR 'Cuda. That was my past. You seem to be small A-body guy for practical reasons I'm sure. My future project is a 1991 Dakota short bed 5 spd. Similar in size to an A-body. With is intriguing me is the Pentastar V-6. 305 hp lightweight V-6 capable of over 30 mpg a huge improvement over any engine available in 1991. I would love the harness challenge. Looking for a 1500 RAM Pentastar donar hopefully a manual!

You are welcome to work on my 6.1 liter hemi. It is misfiring and I am told that the early 3rd generation hemis have issues with valve seats coming loose and sometimes damaging the cinder bore, and the lifters and camshafts wear out very fast. I am a clueless mechanic but I will be taking g the engine apart within the next few weeks. Pray for me and my car poor 300C. Great video.

Looking forward to more info on these late model Hemis. You mentioned the 426 having a flow restriction due to the dome on the piston. Wondering how much that dome hurts flame travel or is this a minor issue. By the way AWESOME shirt !! Rock on !!

Here's a recipe for a great budget build. Gen 3 block, Eagle heads09-13 550 lift Cam (summit), 09-13 intake and a tuner. Should put you over the 500 mark. Porting the heads on that build that will only gain you 40 horse I don't feel it's worth the money for the average guy. A lot of guys are running solid rollers from hellcats, i don't know of the durability of those. Thanks for the cool video

See if you can get your hands on the 2009 or later 5.7 "eagle" hemi heads, they flow a lot better than what you have there. They have square exhaust ports, bigger valves, and the slightly smaller chamber gives you a bump in compression ratio.
