Back in the 70s there was this big legend that Van Halen used to go crazy if they found brown M&Ms in their dressing room. David Lee Roth explained in his book that it was buried deep inside their contract with every venue that there was to be no brown M&Ms in the backstage area. The reason was that he knew that if he walked in and found brown M&Ms, he instantly knew that the venue probably didn't read the contract, and probably did everything else shoddily as well, including electrical setup demands, sound, lighting, etc etc......and he would demand a complete double-check of the entire operation before taking the stage in front of thousands of people. Those spark plug wires are the brown M&Ms, man. 😂

I actually work for the company that he pulled this video from. Buyers be very thorough when buying a classic! The vast a majority of the classics I look at are just thrown together. It is so disgusting how many cars I get in and the carbs are not even adjusted properly, it is like the seller cannot be bothered to adjust their idle on their car before they sell it. Uncle Tony's Garage keep up the awesome work man, I see a lot of uneducated buyers picking up classics for all the wrong reasons without the know how on keeping them road worthy. Same for shops, I see a lot of these cars come from a "professional shop" and its just mickey moused together. Thanks Uncle Tony's Garage for educating the masses, knowledge in this sector seems to be dying out.

@aaronmedley51845 жыл бұрын
@@kidwray4313 don't buy site unseen to start. If you honestly don't know how to verify if a car is in good condition hire an inspector, they are going to give you an honest assessment of the car because they don't care if you buy it or not. If someone is not willing to show you a title, fender tag, vin tag, cowl tag, rpo sticker or anything documentation that can prove a car is what they claim it is then run. Hard to tell what you’re dealing with. This video is excellent from a honest guy who wants to help people from buying and expensive turd. Been there. Done that. 71 Duster 340 that looked great in the ads. Had a friends friend who was a “car guy” go look at it and he said it was a good car. Bought it had it shipped and it was expensive project NOT a good driver. Wiring in the steering column started a fire while driving it home.....Soggy brakes. Speedometer way out of whack. Now, speaking as someone who was the lead tech at an independent used car dealer that specialized in "high end" autos... If a car is being sold at a dealership and has any amount of recent work done to it, but especially if it has a LOT of fresh work... that work was all done as cheap and fast as possible. These places are mostly buying these cars with something called a floor plan. A floor plan is a loan that lets you buy a car to resell it. The first week or two, there's no interest. After that, the interest hits. The interest is tied to you selling the car; there was a lot of "quick, it's the last day - fax the bill of sale to the floor plan before they close!" at that place. So, even aside from all the negative aspects of hanging on to inventory for longer than necessary like having good money sitting around doing nothing, effectively diminishing ROI, getting taxed on something you might not even technically own (in the US, come tax time state and/or local agencies like to tax businesses on everything on their property, including shit they don't even own - shop owners end up paying tax on MY tools - yell at your local politicians... for all the good it'll do), etc., having one of those Barracudas sitting in the shop getting spiffed up is rapidly going to eat into any potential profit from its sale. They need to get the work done fast so it can be sold fast. Hence the wiring being shit. Hence the distributor being stabbed wrong. Hence the PCV being capped and having two breathers without an oil fill. I seriously recommend that people not buy from used car lots. I'd much rather find a private sale because I'm way less likely to get bent over.

I started with Plymouth after being drafted and my trip to Korea ended ( that's a long time ago) what this man is telling you about used cars is true and it's coming from the horse in the barns own mouth ) in my days on the assembly floor we never dreamed these cars would be rolling today, we liked to believe we put enough effort into them that they could , If so called upon but never thought they would in a practical sense . Some of these cars have outlived the men and the pensions who built and designed them . So with that in mind your original source of information is dwindling year by year on what makes them unique to their time , Mr Tony is a well spring of knowledge on this subject as he loves the products that We loved building . I think there are others out there who saw the automobiles that the men of my era built and seek out the ut-most detail in their preservation and maintenance. The fella whose comment I'm adding to is also part of that chain , he's dispensed very sound and succinct advice and caution to those of you seeking something that while it's still a thing of Beauty and desire of design , you have to exercise caution on your quest to possess such an object whose era and place in time has long passed. I need not list them since both men have given you their sincere professional opinions .. I never would have thought so many people today would admire the work we did, like they do with the passion you all have . Keep them shining and running sound .. I hope you approve of the work we did. You certainly appreciate it ..

Honest car. Love that description. That's exactly what you look for. I'm lucky with my 1971 Mustang hunting, the hot rodders and chintzy types tend to slap all the spoilers and stripes. The minute I see the chrome trim along the bottom quarter of a 71 mach 1, I move on if someone has started slapping all the extra stuff on the car and the hockey stripes and that chrome trim are there - NEXT. (A 1971 Mach 1, had lower chrome trim the length of the car if WASN'T a factory stripe car. Factory stripe cars had the trim deleted). The engine is exactly where you see the real deal. My Green 71 mach 1, the engine was almost 100% original. That's what made me fall over to buy it. I could fix the wheels, take the hood stripe off - but that beefy original M-Code Cleveland was unmolested and perfect. Still hate that I sold that car. UGH. One I want back. Anyhoo, with any 71 Mustang 5 seconds and I know if it's worthy or it's a flipper's darling. I don't want a flipper's darling. I want a real car, that's been really loved and maintained. That's why I have my 1985 Mustang GT. I bought from original owner AND have all the paperwork going back to day one. THAT's what I want. Honest as they come. Cheers Tony.

Good advise especially for most people who are either new to the old car hobby or owned one 30 years ago and forgot many things...And for myself to assure myself I am not crazy .. Again all those are fine if the car is priced cheap enough,heck rust is fine for the right price ! But not $22,000 ! $8,000 sure ! I love the stock look and hate aftermarket steering wheels and radiators ! I have mostly stock looking cars/engine bays some do have chrome valve covers but well I am a sucker for shiny things..Electrical wiring if I cant see it assume it needs to be rewired..Painted chrome and trim usually is done to save money and loaded with filler and painted..6 months from now it will crack,peel and look like hell, seen that ! Do you remember back in the mid to late 1980's guys would paint all trim flat black(on a nicely painted car),then up until the early 1990's a pastel side squiggly stripe.I have no idea how or why they thought that looked better than stock looking !! My buddy bought a 68 Sport Satellite painted like this lol..Pink,pastel blue and yellow side squiggly stripe and painted trim,flat black and pink omg !!! He bought it because it was a numbers correct rust free 383 4bbl,4 speed 3.55 car that had stock original interior that was very nice and performed and drove really like new ..Yes,I repainted the car and we found nice original re chromed bumpers and trim he still owns it today,only changes when painted back then was a hood from '68 GTX. The 2 piece rad hose is odd on a so called restored car..I can see if you're 3,830 miles from home in the middle of nowhere and 6 toothless men are checking you out,then yes radiator hose cobble job is in order just to get the hell outta there !!!

I have a friend who has bought and sold many cars in the two decades I've known him. Same thing every time: he redoes the seats and carpet and has the car painted. Never rechromes anything; does as little mechanical work as possible. If it will drive around the block, that's good enough. Some of his cars are better than others. One E body Barracuda he actually paid another friend to rebuild the engine, and paid me to bring the brakes up to snuff. So mechanically it was in good shape. But the firewall was full of holes he stuffed with fiberglass, and the front fenders were fiberglass. Looked great, though, with a good paint job and new seats and carpet, and sold for over $20K. One time he called me to ask me if I would trailer one of his cars to a swap meet/car corral. I asked him why he didn't just drive it as it was only sixty miles away. Oh noooooooo, he couldn't do that. Another time he had an AMX that he again did the paint/upholstery deal. He couldn't get started, so called me. I came over and after a bit determined that the gear at the bottom of the distributor shaft had stripped. We replaced the gear with a new one. Left the cam gear alone as it looked OK and he didn't want to tear the front of the motor apart. After I got it running, he drove it one time for maybe five miles, then he put it up for sale before it tore up again. Again, sold it for a good price (almost $30K). And those were the good cars. Some were awful. But he always seemed to find a sucker who fell for fresh paint and seat covers, and he always made money on his deals.

I live near Atlanta; Gateway and Streetside Classics have some good stuff and a lot of junk with new paint. If anyone is in the market for a classic car the best idea is to learn all they can about which model they desire and try to find the most well maintained original or restored condition for the price. I myself am blown away at some of the asking prices for these old cars, go see it in person! I was a detailer when I was younger and worked for a few classic dealers and at the auctions in Arkansas years ago. Someone dropped off a beautiful Blue '64 or '65 Corvette convertible and I had to drive it into the stadium. Driving at 5 mph in this rickety car was a scary experience! I was already warned the brakes were bad but so was the steering and the transmission and suspension, it felt like it had a cracked frame or a few bent rims. It looked perfect! I guess because they think the factory system is too "finicky" or "complicated" to re-do is the thinking there? Which, I mean...it isn't. I have a 68 Chrysler Newport, if you know anything about Chryslers they used the RV2 style compressor for those model years. The FSM goes into GREAT detail on how to disassemble it, check the compressor oil level with a custom dipstick, how to check the pressure at different temperatures (all in R12 since that's all they had back then), common troubleshooting. Truthfully AC on a car isn't super complicated so it's always baffled me why I see so many cars with an AC delete (like you mentioned). I only had to buy another RV2 compressor because the one on my car as I got it seemed to have been messed up beyond repair (I was disassembling it for a cleaning and one of the piston's connecting bolts was so stuck I stripped the heads trying to remove them - I think they were 11/32th from memory).

We have a Gateway Classics here in Concord and the cars seem similar. I think the biggest part is you have to consider their target audience. Most of the cars parked in the warehouse will likely go to someone that wants to buy a classic and at best knows enough to be dangerous with making a purchase. Their expertise is usually I had a buddy with a car like this in high school. I liked your comparison with the two cars but from what Ive seen at the location here the white one would move before the more original 2nd car because it looks to have newer parts/ cleaned up, even if the wrong parts. When you are considering a classic car I think as a buyer you have to remember it is not a new car anyways so don't be afraid of some imperfections like in the 2nd car. Most of the buyers at places like this seem to think it is the same thing as stoping by the local Toyota dealership and that because its a dealer they're guaranteed issue free driving. Another great video Uncle Tony!

I agree with you about when a car just doesn't seem right. I've restored quite a few cars from bare shells and you try to get it to look as original as possible. Some mods to make them better to use today are fine but you take the time and effort to make them look like they have always belonged there. And if you see them it gives a clear idea of the standard of work in the whole car.

My friend and I restored a 67 notchback barracuda painted in B5 blue. It's got a 360 small block with flow master headers, and the biggest cam we could fit (can't remember the size) along with a 4 barrel edelbrock carb (which we intend to replace), along with 4:10 gears. Awesome car, just had the interior redone since the seats were totally junk before. The car is my friends, but I love riding/driving and seeing the thing. It's going to be a keeper for sure, built it from the bare body up. The engine and transmission also came out of an old dodge motor home. It runs really well for a free motor, it's extremely happy running. Great car.

Look at what you're buying, and also look at who's trying to sell it. Size up your seller. Did he invite you to his house. Why is he selling the car. My favorite reason why somebody is selling a car is "My wife got a new car, and she wants space in the garage." It's always nice to buy something from people that have more money than common sense. Do you like the car and the person who is selling it? Also pink slip, registration, and the name of the person selling the car, addresses, all match. Four of a kind beat three of a kind every time. You are in like Flynn.

I used to work for a company that restores factory A/C and heating parts for classic cars. Yes, that underdash ac unit is period correct. I think I have one in my shop. But I didn't know that Tecumseh compressors were installed on Mopars, even if dealer installed. I'd have figured they still would have installed an RV2. But seeing as how the RV2 uses an epr valve and the underdash uses a thermostat switch, I could see where they would clash. The underdash system is more simple and easier to work on.

You've got the right idea with this, Tony. It's like walking in to look at an old house (more than 50 years old) and it's all fresh paint, brand new flooring, and brand new cabinets. Unless it's just been through a very exacting remodel, my radar goes up for what issues they're covering up. You get the same in cars with guys making questionable decisions in order to get done and turn the product over. Finding those items that have honest provenance is where you can truly find the products that are in good enough shape to warrant the investment. I say with old houses that they've had X years to show you whats wrong with them - foundations, piping, drains, etc. With a new house (or brand new cars) you're guessing to figure out what's the first thing that's going to fail.
