Barrett's Jackson makes me mad. Just because you seen a compeltely restored spotless car with matching numbers go for 1 million dollars in a classic car auction DOES NOT mean your car that's been laying on the ground for years with rotted out floorboards, rotted out frame rails, rusted through panels, and no engine is going to sale for 1 million dollars. I see it all the time in ads for classic cars. It usually states "I've seen such and such car go for this much." Most people don't realize how much work, time, and money go into making a car worthy for Barrett Jackson auction.

Love your work Tony, even the Mopar Action articles you wrote back in the day. Late 20s guy here, and I can safely say owning an old muscle car from the late 60s-early 70s isn’t really about performance, or comfort. For me it’s basically a time machine. I could go out and (for the money I’ve dumped into mine) get an new whatever (Camaro, mustang, challenger charger etc,) and it WILL be better than is predecessor in every way... but it wouldn’t be the same as getting behind the wheel of something that has endured and stayed the same (for the most part) for nearly 50 years. Sure old cars are cantankerous and frustrating but youre rewarded with an experience that connects you to the past, even if we “youngsters” weren’t around to have lived through it.

At Zero - there are some good videos on how unreasonably overvalued early 911 Porsches are, both for their abundant supply and almost too-basic nature. Hoovie's Garage covers that. Doug Demuro talks about how that mania bleeds into ANY earlier Porsche model that was previously considered kind of ugly. But nice car if you already have it and aren't balls deep into it financially speaking. You still need a maniac future buyer to pay a maniacal price if you want to flip for big bucks.

It actually didn't. It killed like i think one Buick Grand National (probably more like a T type), while one Fast and the Furious movie killed a lot more for one opening scene. Popular Hot Rodding magazine whined about all the V8s they were killing...yeah out of 5 million Chevy small blocks, they sent some 305's to their death by pouring in silicone sand. Hollywood kills more each year, cutting them up for cockpit scenes or buying five versions of the Hero Car so it can bump the villan car and yet be dent free in the next shot. to be blunt, if you want a nice car....you have to get off the couch. I looked in a newspaper (remember those) for parts on my Mustangs a few years ago, scored a running 1968 4-4-2 for $4500 instead. Yes, they don't go for $2,000 anymore.

You're exactly right. I'm seeing the wagons, four doors, and otherwise forgettable work cars get a life of their own. What my generation thought of as a parts donor car as teenagers has become hip to millennials! I love it. It's a serious move toward saving our car culture!
@OllamhDrab5 жыл бұрын
It's not just the Millenials when it comes to wagons. Yaknow, I got work to do. It's still a weird alternate universe to me where everyone wants sedans, though. (Even if it's not just cause that's what the market forces on them.) It's still like with even more current cars, so many could be useful as wagons, but the companies want to sell what they want to sell.
@joshn9385 жыл бұрын
I think the other reason is the boomers have pretty much made the coupes, hardtops, and muscle cars all but unaffordable for the young folks- so four doors, wagons, and 2 door sedans are cheaper and use most of the same parts. I see a lot of millennials going for cars that aren't as popular to restore but still have large aftermarkets. instead of Chevelles they get Tempests, Cutlasses, or Skylarks. instead of Impalas, they get Catalinas, 88s, or Lesabres, nd so on and so forth because they're a little more unique and a lot cheaper.

@@XxMusclecarsxX This is true. Back in the heyday of the muscle car in the 60s and 70s( they called them "super cars" back then before that meant exotics) nobody wanted to be seen in a wagon or a four door. Those were for old people, and probably meant you were borrowing pop's car. Turnoff for the ladies, big time. Now times have changed. Look at the Charger. The infinitis. The BMWs. There is an entire class of cars built around "sport sedans". they can run circles around the old muscle cars for sure, but somewhere along the line, the cars just lost their soul. they lost the analog feel. We are living in the heyday of performance, but still, there is something missing. And with Electric cars and- God forbid - DRIVERLESS ones on the horizon, you may well enjoy it while you can. It's still has it's original paint that's in good shape and has not been molested under the hood. I've was able to replace everything to get it on the road with factory correct parts. The "tier 2" of collectables is the 1975-1988 range as well. I predict there will be a tier 3, 1989 to the edges of OBD2. Basically everything after "you need to go to a dealership to get a new battery programmed and pay a week's income" is going to be forgotten junk. Tier 2 and 3 cars won't be popular by nostalgia, it'll be because of all this restrictive and expensive junk that keeps growing in each new generation of cars. I'm getting to a point where I'll buy a frame if it has a title, just to have freedom. "Pre Malaise Era". You get it. You're the Gandalf of cars.

Your videos come through with your ability to communicate; your verbal communication skills from magazine editing are excellent! Your core belief in understanding ANALOG equipment aligns with me. You are a great american because you are patient enough to talk to the american public (youngsters) about something most of us can relate to but don't know much about - working on our car that gets us to and from work. America needs guys like you to publish these great videos to inspire / train our younger generation on what is possible, how to work on their own stuff whether it be a car, garden, clothes, fishing, or home repairs. Our Children need to know how to use their hands - the school of hard knocks........ is priceless. Not everyone steps out of their comfort zone far enough to get the great education from the school of hard knocks. I had an older brother (born in '50) show me how to rebuild a ford truck engine when I was 13; it lasted me a life time. As I got older, I realized how fortunate I was to have him show me these things. Unfortunately, cars of today are not the same; they are more complicated and disposable. Today's cars spoil us. My constructive feed back for you is to never let anyone change your core beliefs about working on your own car. Your videos are simple to understand and very applicable to every make of car manufactured in a time when you can maintain your own car. The 11 episodes rebuilding the slant 6 brought memories back when my brother showed me how to rebuild a 66 for FE engine. Please do not let anyone or any amount of money change your core beliefs. I'm in North Georgia and would like to meet you one day to say that I actually shook your hand and said thanks personally. I'm getting hooked on South Eastern Gasser's Association Racing - its the best.

The market for classic American cars will never die, I've had a serious eye on it since before I could drive and prices have been going nowhere but up for well over a decade. Classic chase films and modern movies that feature American classics, as well as various forms of media and plain old word of mouth have established and carried a reputation for muscle cars not only to foreign lands but future generations as well. I've seen vids of massive car shows in Germany and Japan full of nothing but authentic looking American hot rods and muscle cars. I follow a lot of different youtubers big and small and an Australian friend of mine just paid a lot of cash for a 46 Ford sedan roller he got shipped from Arizona. Another youtuber I follow that lives in the UK just bought an awesome 65 Fury 2 door with a 383 and 4 speed that someone dressed up to look like a classic stock car. That truck has someone stopping me to talk about it everywhere I go and is so much fun to drive... and I can take it anywhere because it has its original, faded and worn down to the original primer paint. I sold the Porsche a month ago. i just wasn't driving it anymore. I'm probably going to get a second F100, but definitely a classic. In my teens, I bought a Superbird after working a couple years at a department store, built a basket Hemi for a total of $3 grand, bought a pile of B and RB engines for $300 total. Late 60s thru 80 or so was a unique time in car culture; monster muscle cars and engines everywhere, kids tearing them down and building them in back yards. It's impossible with today's cars; just high-priced, factory sealed IROC cars with tuned suspension and great sound systems. "Appliances."

As a 34-year-old, I can attest to the fact that without myself living in any of those decades, I still desire everything from 1920s Fords to 1960s muscles cars, to even some Malaise era cars. For me, it's because they represent specific bits of history. I love history, and as cool as it is to see artifacts in a museum, to me nothing does it like being able to ride a machine from days gone by. It gives you sounds, smells, and sights that you wouldn't experience anywhere else. It transports you to another era. And let's be honest, it would suck to live in the 60s compared to today, but being able to transport yourself just a little to the past whenever you flip the key is pretty damn cool.

He is feeding off of youtube's thirst for old tech, but none of his videos quench it. He is the Lauren Southern of the classic car community in terms of being actually usefull, vs just pandering to a community.

Uncle Tony, I’m one of those 20 year olds into the 60s era. I’ve been driving my 64 Galaxie nearly every day this summer, low mileage all original car (with some rust and body damage). It’s not perfect by any means, she’s got a few rust spots, the paint is the original enamel. But what’s most important is that it’s a time capsule; it’s the way it came from the factory. It drives, smells, rides, and stops like it would in the 60s. That’s what I appreciate. When im sitting behind that big wheel on the bench seat, windows down with no AC, it puts a smile on my face. It makes me happier than driving a new car. I take pride in my three on the tree, manual steering car. You just can’t go wrong.

Ahhh, my dilemma-should I be a grown up and make payments for 6 years on the 2019 disposable car, or, follow my heart and pay cash for an absolutely gorgeous, blue with black bucket seat/console interior, '72 Malibu coupe that has a spun rod bearing in it's small block? Long story short, the Malibu is setting in my shop already! No, it's not an SS, but, I don't care! The previous owner paid big $ for a friend of mine to do the body, paint and interior. When the engine went south, his wife said get rid of that money pit! I have the perfect (in my mind) small block on an engine stand already just begging for a new home. I'll put a TH-700R4 behind it and a set of 3.55 gears in the factory 10 bolt. Then I'll drive and enjoy it! I'm 51 years old and remember when you were high class if your radio could pick up FM stations, if it was FM STEREO, you were really stylin. Air conditioning...forget about it lol! It's kind of about nostalgia for my wife and I, but, it's also about time spent with younger people. They bring their cars to the shop because they know that I'll "guide" them on needed repairs while they do most of the work. I've noticed recently that many of them have started buying older vehicles. More than one of the "kids" has told me that they do it because enjoy feeling like they've accomplished something when a repair is complete. They also love to drool over my '88 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Classic, the ONLY vehicle I've ever bought brand new.

@Brown Man If you watched the show, when the father bought the car, it had rallys on it. Somewhere along the way those cheesy directional wheels were installed. They never said what happened to the original wheels which looked much better. When I say original wheels, I mean the wheels that were on it when the father bought it used. The wheels it had were not original to that car in 1967.

Still remember going down with my parents and brother to our local Chevrolet dealership because my brother had seen a new 1969 Chevelle in front of the dealership. My uncle worked there as a salesman and as my brother got in behind the wheel to start it up I looked down at the front fender tag. Just as he turned the key I saw........396/375HP. It was a 4 speed. Dark blue with air induction hood with white stripes. My mother got to use the car as well. Twice I saw her street racing and burying someone who thought it was fun to challenge a 60 year old woman. The first time I asked her what the kids had said. They pulled up beside her and and yelled "Goose it Granny." and when the light changed she did. She told me that if the little bastards wanted a race she'd give them one. Many of my friends would tell me they saw my mom in the Chevelle but they couldn't tell me what she was doing. She passed away at 103-1/2 but if you mentioned the Chevelle her eyes gleamed and she had an evil smile right to the end. The price was $3,200.

Made quarter panels out of barrel lids and that pissed off some old guys but whatever. I got married bought a house and had three kids and so the Duster sits. The exception IMO was Pontiac with the Trans Am. They fought against the demise of the musclecar tooth and nail. Still dropping 455's into a few of their models right up thru 1976. And some of those T/A's were very nice looking rides. Thinking of the Super Duty and HO cars. And don't forget the impact a movie called "Smokey and the Bandit" had on the car market as well. A cam, carb and intake change on a 4 speed '79 Trans Am and you've got yourself a mid 13 second ride. Swap heads for earlier high compression models and you're in the 12's easy enough. I'll never forgive GM for axing Pontiac and keeping Buick. 😠😠😠

@@msh6865 ...YOU ARE 100% Correct!....and a simple Head Swap (little expensive in those days) to get away from all the Big Block Smog heads GM put on to kill horsepower would put a Pont, Olds, Chevy in the low 12 and high 11s with all the other cam, gear changes etc...
