I’m taking out my peninsula ,it’s gonna kill me, but I don’t have room for both the kitchen table and peninsula. I’d rather sit at a table with my family so I’m cutting my losses. I will miss it, but I think the change will be a good one.

Early comment but uncommon kitchen designs sounds like something that is exactly what I need XD. Too many kitchens are very plain and boring to me.

Thanks Mark, it was fun hangin’ with you and all the fellow kitchenphiles. I live in the it-doesn’t-get-much-souther south and I say no to ceiling fans in the kitchen. They accumulate and distribute dust, fuzz and grossness-hard pass. Personally, I don’t like them anywhere but in the bedrooms, but that’s me. I don’t like ceiling furniture. Funnily is a word-shocker; right?! Next time let’s read “My refrigerator is my spirit animal.” I kid! I joke! I josh! 🤗🤗🤗😘😘😘 -terese

I am very much a lamp person, but I agree with Mark that they really don't belong in the kitchen - all the nooks and crannies (to say nothing of paper/fabric shades) will just get greasy in the kitchen and look unsightly far too quickly. That's why I'm a fan of soft under-cabinet lighting on a dimmer - it gives you a lamp-like effect without the unsightly build-up of kitchen grime! Also, ceiling fans are super useful, even if you have AC, because they help to move air around and keep the whole house roughly the same temperature. Even well-planned HVAC systems will often have hot and cold spots (often shifting throughout the day), so keeping the ambient air moving between rooms is a good thing. Plus, there's some evidence that stagnant, indoor air can be detrimental to health.

Because I don’t have an open plan and because my kitchen does not have eat in space, the idea of storing most of my dishes in the dining room is one I’ve already considered. Something I’ve also seen in magazines when you are really short on cabinet drawer space is to use a rail system with buckets to hold silverware.

No bottom freezers. Side by side moved up a bit so there is never a need to bend down to access something. Bending down is never fun or efficient, especially when your back goes out, and it will at some point in your life.
@trinaroe51326 ай бұрын
I’m guessing that the designer from Maine that recommended wall mounted faucets is referring to sinks that are not under windows and if they aren’t under a window they might be on an interior wall. That would make it easier for an access panel to get to the plumbing, which was the concern so many expressed in the live chat.

I don’t have room for one, but I do like banquettes that are laid out like a restaurant booth, rather than an L shape, and the booth style takes up less space than a table & chairs. With an L shape bench in a corner most people wind up using a round table so people don’t get caught by the corners, but with straight benches only the people sitting dead center on the seat are a comfortable distance from the table as it curves away from the other seats.

Enjoyed tonight’s video but did have trouble keeping up with all the live chat and listening. Somehow it’s easier to do three things on this end (listen, look at pics, and read comments) than it is to do two! 🤷🏼♀️ Maybe that’s because I’m a visual learner. And maybe the reason I enjoyed the book more than some others did is because I’m ENFJ on Meyers-Briggs personality test so the intuition and feelings portion is I guess a little touchy/feely as you put it! 😂 It might have been easier with an ebook where it might have been easier to show and view the pictures. Or if you do a regular book again interact with the comments throughout the video more. I still haven’t been able to figure out how to read the live comments when you post this later.

I can’t see any of the older chats either. I tried changing KZbin settings and some other things, but on my end I’ve never been able to see the live chat after they are posted no matter how long I wait or how far I go back to old lives. 🤷🏼♀️Everything I’ve looked up was telling content creators how to see it, not viewers after the fact. So I don’t know if none of us other than you and Jackie and anyone else who is a moderator can see it or not. I’ve just accepted it as us at this point.

I collect antique dishes and never have to take a stack down from a cabinet since 90+% of the time I’m cooking just for me. So I would never keep my dishes in a drawer for fear of them chipping from all the movement. And because antique dishes are typically smaller than dishes today I’m not sure most of the organizers would fit them properly to prevent movement when the drawer is opened and closed.

- I also put most of my plates and cutlery outside of the kitchen, they're in a beautiful antique cabinet in the dining room along with the rest of the "good" china and silverware. The pots usually just go on the table here so it doesn't make sense to have all the plates in the kitchen. When I do plan on dressing the plates in the kitchen before serving them to the guests, I just take the plates I need to the kitchen before the guests are at the table. - About the 1 meter of countertop: Maybe the designer/author meant the length between the (main) cooktop/range and the (main) sink? I have exactly one meter of countertop space between my main sink and my main cooktop and that's perfect: it's enough space for me to put prepped ingredients, cut some fresh herbs, put cooking utensils... but at the same time keeps the walking distance to fill/drain a pot nice and short. I thought I wanted 1.2-1.5 meters in between the sink and cooktop, but I'm glad I had to compromise on "just" 1.0 meter. I do have and use a LOT of countertop space elsewhere in my galley kitchen though, that 1 meter is just to use while actually cooking. - 2 Sinks: I do have two sinks and I LOVE it. I don't have a "decorative sink", my kitchen is closed off and designed entirely around functionality. I have a standard double sink near the cooking area of which I use one bowl to clean as I go and one bowl to fill/drain pots or rinse vegetables, and I have a large single sink to throw the dishes in before they go in the dishwasher and to clean large pots/trays. - Follow *your* needs/taste: this is what I love about my closed off kitchen: the looks don't matter, I don't have to worry about it being trendy or matching the rest of the house. Instead of choosing the fronts and stones of the moment, I just went with affordable and practical. F.e.: I just have cheap, easy to clean, low maintenance laminate countertops, if I were to upgrade them I'd go stainless steel, something I wouldn't dream of doing in an open concept kitchen.

??? Regarding looking at appliances in person: When I searched the big box store apps for 24” ranges the ones I liked the looks of the best were from companies I’d never heard of or seen on display. Do they let you order them to the store and then not take them if you don’t like the feel/quality??? For fridges it’s not as big a deal as long as the manufacturers website shows what the interior is like and I’m familiar with the company. But stoves I’m not as comfortable with just looking at pictures.

😂 I still pay bills by check (except for ones that are the exact same amount each month and are automatically deducted) but not in my kitchen. I have my old baby wardrobe in the foyer as a command center, with a shredder behind the door, and office supplies in the top two drawers and paper recycling in the bottom two drawers. My mailbox is on the front porch so I bring in mail via the front door and this wardrobe is just inside that door. I don’t pay ANYTHING via my phone and don’t even have my credit card info stored on it.

Ok so I know what she’s on about with the olive oil bottle!! It’s something that annoys me with my kitchen! I basically have no pantry but I don’t have much food anyway but the most convenient spot that I found for my “pantry’ is in the overhead wall cupboards, one shelf to the upper right of the stove and the fridge on the other side.L of that cupboard. There’s 3 fixed shelves, my oil bottle does not fit on the first shelf, but the current one I have fits on the second shelf. The previous olive oil but bottle I had didn’t fit on any of the shelves so t was permanently out. So I think the olive oil thing is about bottles not fitting on the shelves so maybe it’s about making sure your selves can fit a variety of olive oil bottles, notherwise if it doesn’t fit you have to go find a new olive oil bottle that does the the shelf

Millions of people in recent years have renovated to create their "must have" kitchen, which is some shade of all white, with stainless steel appliances. Interestingly, you can browse through dozens of high end architectural and design magazines filled with award winning kitchen designs and you will rarely, or never see the bland white kitchen. Watch thousands of current television shows and movies, which have scenes shot in a mansion's kitchen and the bland white kitchen is nowhere to be found. Top designers and millionaires don't follow trends.

By the same token, raise the dishwasher. 10" or so makes a big difference. Why make a daily task harder?
@RyanS4936 ай бұрын
While I understand the thought process, I tend to oppose this idea. The DW is usually right next to the sink base cabinet. So raising it means you have a raised countertop right against the sink. The counterpoint to that is usually, well let’s move it away from the sink! Okay, have you ever loaded a dishwasher that was several steps away from the sink? I’m willing to bet most won’t enjoy wiping up the dripped water from the floor lol. Not saying it can’t be done, but I would say it’s not worth it.
@BigVine-m5i6 ай бұрын
@@RyanS493 Well, this is under the heading "Uncommon Kitchen Design." The DW can be just about 20 inches from the sink and raised. That would be easily within a no extra step radius and wouldn't make for any extra drips on the floor. Besides, even if a few drops happen, a mop works great without bending over, but every dish in the bottom of a normally sited DW needs to be bent over for. Also, a higher DW can have a cabinet directly above it, making emptying it a dream, without any extra steps. Love your channel.
