My fave uncommon tool for graphite drawing is a paintbrush. Does lovely soft diffused shadows and blends so lovely. If no one has tried it yet, I highly recommend.

Thank you for this very interesting and informative video. I have been doing realistic pencil drawing most of my adult life and I'm always open to new ideas for materials. I've begun using Tombow erasers and love them, but I've had the same problem with them spinning. I've just tried putting some of it in a clutch pencil and it works great. I will also try the craft tack. I think this will help me with hair which I hate. Also, my chief tool is a blending stump, and I'm very interested in trying the color shaper. I would be particularly interested in hearing your paper choices. I have tried about nine hundred different papers over the years and have recently settled on Stonehenge.

Thanks for the tips! That drawing is so amazing it must’ve taken forever😮👌🏽I’m learning to draw a little better and my small drawings take several hours fully rendered and they are nothing compared to yours. Nice work! You mentioned that color theory is troublesome for you, but there’s a great way to understand it. I’ve analyzed Van Gogh and several other master painters (and colorful photos) and I find they usually incorporate variations of four colors...red, yellow, blue, and green. They create a hierarchy within these four colors as well (a.k.a. Large, medium, small, extra small). Also it helps to create harmony if the colors act as value opposites...if that makes sense. For example, they say “red and green should never be seen,” but this isn’t true if we have a dark red next to a light green...or vice versa. We get into trouble when colors of the same intensity are placed next to each other without a neutral in between them. Complimentary colors usually don’t harmonize well unless one is lighter/darker than the other. They can be used to grab attention if they have the same intensity, but that is not harmony. Anyway, I’m rambling now :P try that out though, see if having a hierarchy with variations of the four colors helps. Take care, keep up the amazing art!

Some great tips! I already do some of those things but I haven't put the small Tombow in a different holder - great idea! I also use a battery operated eraser (spins) by Derwent - makes life easier sometimes. I keep my pencils in a Global Art leather case - love it. I would use your idea if I did more pencil drawing though.

+CorpsmanPrivateer Thanks! It's mostly trial and error - I usually do furry animals, so fossilized bone has been an adventure. The advantage to the color shaper over a blending stump is that it doesn't absorb the graphite, it just moves it around; that's been really helpful for this piece especially.

Funny how so many bids are interrupted by a barking dog. I've done many, many graphites but have found oil pastel pencils a boon to art. I love color. I still do all my rendering in graph. Excellent bid.

Thanks for your video. Have you ever tried dipping the point of a pencil ✏️ in lighter fluid? It turns the graphite pitch black. Just pour a small amount in a lid from a medicine bottle & dip. 👍☮️🌞🌟✏️💖

What a wonderful video to run across! Using the clutch pens for the eraser refills is amazing and I have a tin of the silicon tip tools that I used for sculpting polymer clay. I re-purposed a couple of them for smearing masking fluid on watercolor paper and they work wonderful for that but using them to shade graphite is something I never thought of and will be trying today! Oh, what size of clutch pen should I get and will the rectangular eraser refills fit also? I never bought one before. Thank you! By the way, your saber tooth skull is fantastic! Awesome piece of work.

I’m curious though- for the clutch pencils that hold your tombos… did you get the 2.5 mm ones? This video was so, so useful to me!! And I’ve been working with graphite SO many many years! Decades! Thank you!😉

How do you keep graphite from shining. I've tried going over the mark with alcohol colorless blender and that helps. I've seen many graphite renderings with black marks and even entire sections like hair and backgrounds in graphite and they don't have that irritating shine. Thanks.
@70msFineArt
@70msFineArt 7 жыл бұрын
Hey! Graphite by nature is highly reflective, so it's difficult to completely eliminate shine and it's to be expected that you'll have some. Using a paper with some tooth (like Stonehenge) vs a smooth paper will help, especially if you blend the graphite into the tooth of the paper instead of letting it sit on top. You could try using carbon pencils for your darkest darks if the shine really bothers you (I don't use it, I prefer the smoother blending of graphite). Finally, spraying the drawing with a matte fixative when it's finished will take the worst of the shine out. Hope that helps!
@girthquake891
@girthquake891 7 жыл бұрын
Virzantillweed, General's Kimberly pencils and Staedtler pencils barely have any shine to them because they have more clay than most other pencils. I'd recommend getting one of those. If you want something a little darker that has virtually no shine, then get the Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black pencils in 7B and 8B. They're the same as a graphite pencil, but with a little carbon added in with the graphite and clay. It makes the lead a little darker without the annoying shine to it.

very interesting content. Thank you. Hope you do not mind a little constructive criticism: try to hold the camera steady. Stay more zoomed out (get a wider general framing POV) and avoid zooming in and out too often or too fast or panning too fast as it may get the video hard to watch.
